Will Cascadia ever happen?

Seven times in the past 3,500 years, the CSZ has buckled and fractured to produce an earthquake so massive that it left a mark in the geologic record. There's a one-in-10 chance that the next major Cascadia quake will occur sometime in the next 50 years. The odds of a lesser but still major event are even greater.

The Next Cascadia Earthquake: Worst Case Scenario

How likely is Cascadia earthquake?

It is simply not scientifically feasible to predict, or even estimate, when the next Cascadia earthquake will occur, but the calculated odds that a Cascadia earthquake will occur in the next 50 years range from 7-15 percent for a great earthquake affecting the entire Pacific Northwest to about 37 percent for a very ...

Will Cascadia earthquake affect Seattle?

A Cascadia megathrust earthquake could rank as one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, but because Seattle is several hundred miles from the source seismic waves would weaken slightly before they reach Seattle. Shaking would be violent and prolonged, but not as intense as in a Seattle Fault quake.

Will Seattle be underwater?

Climate change is expected to accelerate rising sea levels during the next century. Central estimates indicate that Seattle will experience 10 inches of sea-level rise by 2050, and 28 inches by 2100, and 47 inches by 2150.

How far inland would a tsunami go in Washington?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recreated this tsunami using a model. The modelled tsunami would flood areas up to one mile inland with depths up to 5 meters.

Could a tsunami hit Puget Sound?

New tsunami hazard maps published by the Washington Geological Survey and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) show that a large earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ) off the Washington coast could cause a tsunami that will not only reach the Puget Sound and Hood Canal, but will leave ...

How long will the Cascadia earthquake last?

And as if that weren't bad enough, the Cascadia fault is so extended that the resulting quake is expected to last for about 100 seconds. That's significantly longer than the duration of a typical California earthquake, and that adds to the bad news, said UW engineering professor Jeffrey Berman.

Has a tsunami ever hit Washington State?

In 1964, a tsunami trig- gered by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake in Alaska reached northwest Washington within 3.5 hours, and caused flooding and damage in some locations. farther inland, as happened when an earthquake on the Seattle fault generated a tsunami about 1,100 years ago.

The 900 AD Seattle Fault earthquake triggered massive landslides into Lake Washington, but no evidence has been found yet that they caused tsunamis.
