Wurtz reaction not preferred for the preparation of alkane containing an odd number of carbon atoms due to the formation of a number of products. ... Wurtz reaction generally fails when tertiary alkyl halides are used because tertiary alkyl halides include elimination reaction as side reactions.

Why is Wurtz reaction is not preferred for the preparation of alkanes containing odd number of carbon atom illustrate your answer by taking one example?

Wurtz reaction not preferred for the preparation of alkanes containing an odd number of carbon atoms because if we take two dissimilar alkyl halide as a reactant, the product will be a mixture of alkane but the reaction is by a free radical mechanism it will produce an alkene also. example- bromomethane and iodoethane.

Why Wurtz reaction is preferred for the synthesis of symmetrical alkane only?

The usefulness of the reaction is limited to synthesis of symmetrical alkanes (which must have even numbers of C atoms by definition) because if two different halides are used a mixture of all three possible products is formed so reducing the yield but also these mixtures can be difficult to seperate...

Which one is not prepared by Wurtz reaction?

CH4 has only one carbon atom, hence it can't be prepared by Wurtz reaction, which involves two molecules of alkyl halide.

Which hydrocarbons Cannot be prepared by Wurtz reaction?

The Wurtz reaction cannot prepare methane because it contains only one carbon atom.

Why is Wurtz reaction not preferred for the preparation of alkanes containing odd number of carb...

Which of the following Cannot be synthesized by Wurtz reaction?

It should be also noted that methane cannot be synthesized through the Wurtz reaction since the product of an organic coupling reaction must have at least two carbon atoms. A reaction that is related to the Wurtz Reaction in which aryl halides are used instead of alkyl halides is called the Wurtzilite reaction.

Can Benzene be prepared by Wurtz reaction?

Ethyl benzene cannot be prepared by Wurtz reaction. In Wurtz reaction haloalkanes are converted to aliphatic saturated higher hydrocarbons.

Which of the following Cannot be made in good yield by Wurtz reaction?

2,3-Dimethylbutane.

What is the mechanism of Wurtz reaction?

Mechanism One: By a formation of free radical as an intermediate. Step 2: In second step, second sodium atom release one more electron to the free radical and provide a carbonium ion. Step 3: A halide ion is displaced by alkyl anion from another molecule of alkyl halide. This reaction is considered as a SN2 reaction.

Which one of the following is Wurtz reaction?

The Wurtz reaction, named after Charles Adolphe Wurtz, is a coupling reaction in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and recently inorganic main-group polymers, whereby two alkyl halides are reacted with sodium metal in dry ether solution to form a higher alkane.

Why Wurtz reaction is not suitable for preparation of unsymmetrical?

Example: Wurtz reaction cannot be used for the preparation of unsymmetrical alkanes because if two dissimilar alkyl halides are considered as the reactants, then a mixture of alkanes is obtained as the products. Since the reaction involves free radical species, a side reaction also occurs to produce an alkene.

What happens if two different alkyl halides are taken in Wurtz reaction?

If two different alkyl halides are used in the Wurtz reaction to prepare an alkane with an odd number of carbon atoms, then a mixture of three alkanes is produced. It is because the two alkyl halides in addition to reacting with each other also react among themselves giving a mixture of three alkanes.

Why Corey house method is better for preparing higher alkanes than Wurtz reaction?

The advantages of Corey house reaction over Wurtz reaction are listed below. The formation of alkyl lithium is the first step in Corey house synthesis. We can prepare only even carbon numbers of alkane in Wurtz reaction but in Corey house synthesis we can prepare oddly and even and carbon number alkane.

Which method is preferred for preparation of alkanes with odd number of carbon?

For preparing alkanes containing odd number of carbon atoms, a mixture of two alkyl halides has to be used. These two alkyl halides may react in three different ways producing a mixture of three alkanes instead of desired alkane.

Which of the following process is not good for the preparation of open chain alkane having odd number of carbons?

The alkanes obtained by this method contain an odd number of carbon atoms. So, thus from the above it is clear that alkanes having odd carbons cannot be prepared as a major product in Wurtz reaction, Frankland reaction and Kolbe's electrolysis.

What is the limitation of Wurtz reaction?

Limitations of the Wurtz Reaction

Should the alkyl halides be bulky in nature, especially at the halogen end, there is a greater amount of alkene formed. Methane cannot be synthesized via the Wurtz reaction since the product of an organic coupling reaction must have at least two carbon atoms.

Why Wurtz reaction is not suitable for tertiary alkyl halides?

Nucleophilic attack on a tertiary alkyl halide is extremely slow because of steric hindrance. That's why the Wurtz reaction does not work with tertiary alkyl halides.

Which active metal is used in Wurtz reaction?

The Wurtz reaction involves the coupling of alkyl halides using sodium metal according to equation (1).

Which of the following alkanes is not obtained by Wurtz reaction?

According to given options of the question, methane is the only alkane having one-carbon (it is also referred to the simplest alkane). The chemical formula for methane CH4. This means there is an absence of a C-C bond. Hence, according to given options, methane is the only alkane cannot be obtained by Wurtz reaction.

Which alkanes can be prepared by Wurtz reaction in good yield?

n-butane, n-hexane, 2,3-dimethylbutane are symmetrical alkanes. Such alkanes are prepared in good yield by Wurtz reaction as these require single alkyl halide for their preparation.

Which of the following can be obtained in good yield by Wurtz reaction?

Which of the following alkanes can be synthesized by the Wurtz reaction in good yield ? Symmetrical alkane with even number of carbon atoms can be prepared by Wurtz reaction.

Why is dry ether used in Wurtz reaction?

In Wurtz reaction sodium metal is used which is very reactive. So selection of the solvent is done in such a way that the sodium metal does not react with the solvent. Dry ether is a solvent which does not react with sodium. ... Since dry ether is a good non-polar, aprotic solvent, so it is used in Wurtz reaction.

Why benzene does not add addition reaction?

Benzene is an aromatic compound and is stabilized due to resonance or delocalization of π electrons. When it undergoes addition reactions, it will lose resonance stabilization. Hence it resists electrophilic additions to double bonds in it.

Why is ethyl benzene not prepared by simple alkylation of benzene?

it is because of this disadvantage of polysubstitution that F.C. alkylation reaction is not used for preparation of alkylbenzenes. ... instead F.C. acylation is used.

Which hydrocarbon Cannot occur in the Wurtz reaction between the ethyl iodide and the NN propyl iodide?

Now when Ethyl iodide and n-propyl iodide are allowed to undergo cross-addition reaction they form another alkane (CH3CH2CH3CH2CH3) pentane. So, the alkanes formed during the reaction are butane, pentane, and hexane are formed. Propane is the alkane that is not formed in the reaction.
