Lutetium was discovered in 1907–08 by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach and Georges Urbain, working independently. Urbain derived the name for the element from Lutetia, the ancient Roman name for Paris, to honour his native city. ... Lutetium is also found in the products of nuclear fission.

Is lutetium named after a country?

The important role of French scientists in chemical breakthroughs has seen three elements named after the country francium; lutetium, for Lutetia —the Roman name for Paris; and gallium for France's Roman name, Gaul, derived from the Latin word, gallus, meaning rooster, the symbol of France.

Which is the rarest element on the Earth?

A team of researchers using the ISOLDE nuclear-physics facility at CERN has measured for the first time the so-called electron affinity of the chemical element astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth.

What are 5 interesting facts about lutetium?

• Lutetium was the last natural rare earth element that was discovered. ...
• The element originally was named lutecium. ...
• Lutetium is the hardest lanthanide element.
• It's also the most expensive lanthanide.
• Atoms of lutetium are the smallest of any lanthanide element.

Who discovered the element lutetium?

Lutetium was actually the last lanthanide to be isolated in 1907; and was simultaneously discovered by three chemists working in different parts of the world. They were the Austrian Carl Auer von Welsbach, the American Charles James, and Georges Urbain from France.

Where was indium found?

Indium was discovered in 1863 by Ferdinand Reich at the Freiberg School of Mines in Germany. Reich was investigating a sample of the mineral zinc blende (now known as sphalerite, ZnS) which he believed might contain the recently discovered element thallium.

Are there still missing elements?

Although there are elements we have not yet created or found in nature, scientists already know what they will be and can predict their properties. For example, element 125 has not been observed, but when it is, it will appear in a new row of the periodic table as a transition metal.

What elements do not exist on Earth?

But when we look at the full gamut of elements in the periodic table, there's one missing that you might have expected to be there: the 43rd one, Technetium, a shiny, gray metal as dense as lead with a melting point of over 3,000 °F, that simply doesn't occur naturally on our world.

What is the only letter not appearing on the periodic table?

The only letter that doesn't appear in the periodic table is ... J! Did you know!? The letter "Q" does not appear in any official element names, but it does in temporary element names, such as ununquadium.

Why is Meitnerium so important?

It decays into bohrium-274 (274Bh) through alpha decay. Meitnerium is produced artificially. It can be made by bombarding atoms of bismuth-209 (209Bi) with ions of iron-58 (58Fe) using a linear accelerator. Armbruster and Münzenber bombarded their target for a week in order to produce a fused nucleus.

What is 110 on the periodic table?

darmstadtium (Ds), artificially produced transuranium element of atomic number 110.

Why is lutetium in the F block?

Lutetium is part of the lanthanide series, notwithstanding its electron configuration, because its properties and those of its compounds are similar to those of the other lanthanide elements. Lawrencium is assigned to the actinides for basically the same reason.

How much is lutetium worth?

Lutetium is worth approximately $10,000 per kilogram and for its high price it has found few commercial uses, although it has applications in the petroleum industry for petroleum cracking and has experimental uses in certain cancer treatments.

Why is space black?

Because space is a near-perfect vacuum — meaning it has exceedingly few particles — there's virtually nothing in the space between stars and planets to scatter light to our eyes. And with no light reaching the eyes, they see black.

Are there atoms in space?

The contents of interstellar space are called the interstellar medium. Approximately 70% of the mass of the interstellar medium consists of lone hydrogen atoms; most of the remainder consists of helium atoms. ... A number of molecules exist in interstellar space, as can tiny 0.1 μm dust particles.

Can new elements be found?

New elements aren't exactly discovered anymore. However, they can be made, using particle accelerators and nuclear reactions. A new element is made by adding a proton (or more than one) or neutron to a pre-existing element. ... It's difficult to prove that you have made a new element, because it decays so quickly.

What is the 125 element?

Tellurium-125 | Te - PubChem.

Why are there only 92 naturally occurring elements?

There are only 88 naturally-occurring chemical elements. ... The elements 43, 61, 85 and 87 have no stable isotopes, and none of long half-life, so they are not naturally present. Small amounts are made in nuclear reactions induced by cosmic rays and nuclear tests, but these soon disappear.

Who invented indium?

Indium, a soft malleable metal, was discovered in 1863 by two German chemists, Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymous Richter.

Is indium named after India?

They named the element indium, from the indigo color seen in its spectrum, after the Latin indicum, meaning 'of India'.

What Colour is indium?

Indium is a soft, ductile, manleable, lustrous metallic metal. Its colour is silvery white and it has a face-centered tetragonal structure.
