Explanation: There are no protective seed coats around the megasporangium. There is no resting period between the formation on an embryo and its growth into a young sporophyte. ... Thus there is no true seed formation in Selaginella.

Does Selaginella show seed habit?

Selaginella has a tendency to form seed, called seed habit, because it follows.

What changes are required to make Selaginella seed plant?

• Evolution of heterospory.
• Reduction to a single functional megaspore per sporangium.
• Retention and germination of megaspore within the megasporangium.
• Development of protective layers and nutritive tissue around megasporangium.

Why seed is not formed in Pteridophytes?

The plants in Division Pteridophyta are seedless. These do not multiply by seeds as the plants in Division Spermatophyta. The life cycle pattern in both Pteridophyta and Spermatophyta is basically same. Plants in both divisions exhibit alternation of generations .

Is Selaginella a gymnosperm or angiosperm?

Selaginella is a spike moss, a lower non-vascular plant, but is heterosporous as gymnosperms and angiosperms. Selaginella is believed to be a living relict, biologists believe this genus has survived virtually unchanged in appearance for hundreds of millions of years.

Heterospory and Seed Habit in Pteridophytes

Is Selaginella a seed plant?

Ancestral heterosporous seedless plants, represented by modern-day plants such as the spike moss Selaginella, are seen as the evolutionary forerunners of seed plants. In the life cycle of Selaginella, both male and female sporangia develop within the same stem-like strobilus.

How does Selaginella reproduce?

Vegatateve Reproduction: Selaginella reproduces by tubers, bulbils, dormant buds and by fragmentation. The prostrate branches produce roots during favourable conditions. These roof bearing prostrate branches separate from the parent plant and grow into new sporophytes. This has been reported in S.

Why Selaginella does not produce seed?

Answer: Selaginella does not produce seeds because they are non- flower plant and are reproduced using spores. ... The Selaginella are heterosporous of two different types of spores, namely mega spores and microspores. The gymnosperms produces seeds inside the female reproductive part of the female.

Does not form true seed?

Gymnosperms form naked seeds. Pteridophytes don't form seeds.

How do plants that don't make seeds reproduce?

Some plants, like ferns and mosses, grow from spores. ... Other plants use asexual vegetative reproduction and grow new plants from rhizomes or tubers. We can also use techniques like grafting or take cuttings to make new plants.

Why gametophyte is called so?

The gametophyte is the sexual phase in the life cycle of plants and algae. It develops sex organs that produce gametes, haploid sex cells that participate in fertilization to form a diploid zygote which has a double set of chromosomes.

Does selaginella require water for fertilization?

Water is required for the fertilization in the bryophytes that is Dryopteris and Selaginella. ... While female flowers grow under the water and with the help of long stalks they come on the surface of water.

Where does fertilization occur in selaginella?

Fertilisation: In majority of the species, fertilisation takes place after the megasporangium gets settled on the substratum, but in some cases (e.g., 5. rupestris), fertilisation occurs while the female gametophyte is still within the sporangium.

Do bryophytes produce seeds?

Bryophytes produce spores, rather than seeds, and have no flowers. ... They also have no flowers and produce spores.

How far Selaginella reaches the seed habit?

Selaginella produce two kinds of spores, macro (large) and micro (small) spores. The megaspores and microspores germinate and give rise to female and male gametophytes, respectively. But Selaginella falls short of seed habit due to lack of integument around the megasporangium.

Is Selaginella Heterosporous or Homosporous?

Lycopodium is homosporous--all spores are roughly equal in size. Selaginella and Isoetes are heterosporous--spores are of two distinct sizes, microspores and megaspores.

What is true seed in agriculture?

1 Propagation by True Seeds. Propagation using true seeds is the cheapest for many agricultural crop plants. Under natural conditions, plants growing from seeds, such as many cereal and legume crops (e.g., maize, wheat, beans, sorghum, millets, etc.)

What is true to type seed?

True to seed, or growing true, refers to plants whose seed will yield the same type of plant as the original plant. ... Open pollinated plants, which include heirlooms, will almost always grow true to seed if another variety does not cross-pollinate them.

What are the 5 types of seeds?

• FlaxSeeds. This type of seed has gained unmatched popularity when the discussion is about good health. ...
• Chia Seeds. ...
• Rajgira Seeds. ...
• Sunflower Seeds. ...
• Pumpkin Seeds. ...
• Basil Seeds. ...
• Hemp Seeds. ...
• Pomegranate Seeds.

Which is absent in leaf of Selaginella?

Centrally located stele (or steles) is connected with the cortex with the help of many long, radially elongated cells called trabeculae. ... Trabeculae are absent in species like S. adunca, S. rupestris, etc.

Does Selaginella have Microphylls?

Description. Selaginella species are creeping or ascendant plants with simple, scale-like leaves (microphylls) on branching stems from which roots also arise. ... In Selaginella, each microphyll and sporophyll has a small scale-like outgrowth called a ligule at the base of the upper surface.

What is Rhizophore Selaginella?

Rhizophores, seen only in the lycophyte Selaginella, are downward growing axial organs located at branching points of the shoot and which produce roots near their apex upon reaching the soil (Jernstedt et al., 1994).

Which types of reproduction is observed in Selaginella?

Selaginella reproduces by two methods: Vegetatively and by formation of spores.

What is the use of Selaginella?

Field research and literature review indicated that Selaginella is used traditionally to heal wound, bloody stools, internal hemorrhoid bleeding, menstrual and uterine disorder, blood expediting, enhancing body endurance and longevity of live, headache, etc.
