Post-tensioning, which is a form of prestressing, has several advantages over standard reinforcing steel (rebars): It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints, are needed. Cracks that do form are held tightly together. It allows slabs and other structural members to be thinner.

What is the purpose of post-tensioning concrete?

Designers use post-tensioning as a way to reinforce concrete by prestressing it. In prestressed members, compressive stresses are introduced into the concrete to reduce tensile stresses resulting from applied loads including the self weight of the member (dead load).

Is post tension slab necessary?

Post-tensioning provides high strength and stability, but looks just like any other concrete slab. While most home projects don't require post-tensioning, it could still be a useful technique for some builders.

Why we use PT slab?

Post tension slab is a combination of conventional slab reinforcement and additional protruding high-strength steel tendons, which are consequently subjected to tension after the concrete has set. This hybridisation helps achieve the formation of a much thinner slab with a longer span devoid of any column-free spaces.

Where is post tensioned concrete used?

Common uses and advantages

Post-tensioning now is used extensively in bridges, elevated slabs (parking structures and residential or commercial buildings), residential foundations, walls, and columns. Jim Rogers Bending and flexing creates high tensile forces that can cause the concrete floor slab to crack.

Pre Tensioning VS Post Tensioning

What are the benefits of post tensioning?

• It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints, are needed.
• Cracks that do form are held tightly together.
• It allows slabs and other structural members to be thinner.
• It allows us to build slabs on expansive or soft soils.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pre tensioning method of prestressing?

1) The cross-section is utilized more efficiently in pre-stressed concrete as compared to reinforced concrete. 2) Pre stressed concrete allows for a longer span. 3) Pre-stressed concrete members offer more resistance against shear force.

Why is post tension used?

The use of post-tensioning allows thinner concrete sections, longer spans between supports, stiffer walls to resist lateral loads and stiffer foundations to resist the effects of shrinking and swelling soils.

How does post tension concrete work?

A post tension slab is a concrete slab with steel cables running through it that have been placed under 33,000 +/- pounds of tension. This tension makes the concrete slab and foundation much stronger than concrete without reinforcement and helps reduce cracking.

What is the principle of post tensioning?

Post-tensioning is a form of prestressing. Prestressing simply means that the steel is stressed (pulled or tensioned) before the concrete has to support the service loads. Most precast, prestressed concrete is actually pre-tensioned-the steel is pulled before the concrete is poured.

Why do shrinkage cracks happen?

Plastic shrinkage cracks occur when there is rapid loss of water from the surface of freshly poured concrete (before it has fully set). This causes the top of the concrete slab to dry more quickly than the bottom, and they pull apart.

What happens if you cut a post tension slab?

Once the concrete is poured and sets, the cables are tensioned. Once tensioned, the cables cannot be de-tensioned. The hazard exists when workers cut into the slab and rupture the tensioned cable. ... Do NOT cut into a post tensioned slab if there is a chance you will rupture a cable.

Which is better pre tensioning or post-tensioning?

Pre-tensioning is preferred when the structural element is small and easy to transport. Post-tensioning is preferred when the structural element is heavy.

What are the advantages of prestressed concrete?

Advantages of Prestressed Concrete

Longer span length increases untroubled floor space and parking facilities. Longer spans results in fewer joints, as a result, less maintenance is needed. Possibility of steel corrosion and subsequent concrete deterioration is declined because concrete is crack-free.

Is post tensioning system economical?

Both the systems were analysed using SAP and MS Excel program was developed based on the design methodology. The results indicate that Post Tensioned flat slabs are cheaper than the RCC slab systems for all the spans considered in the present study.

What is the difference between post tensioned and prestressed?

Pretension is the technique in which we are imparting tension in strands before placing the concrete. Post tensioning is done by forming a duct in which strands are pulled (tensioned) after the concrete gains it's full strength. ... This method is done due to bonding between concrete and steel.

Why is high strength concrete necessary for prestressed concrete Mcq?

Explanation: The concrete in a prestressed concrete member is subjected to high bearing stresses due to anchoring at its ends and hence, high strength concrete is required to safely resist the bursting stresses at the end of the beam.

Why We use high strength concrete in prestressed concrete?

(i) High strength concrete is necessary for prestress concrete as the material offers highly resistance in tension, shear bond and bearing. ... High strength concrete is less liable to shrinkage cracks and has lighter modulus of elasticity and smaller ultimate creep strain resulting in a smaller loss of prestress in steel.

What are the advantages of prestressed concrete over reinforced concrete?

• Reduces occurrence of cracks .
• Freezing & thawing durability is higher than non prestressed concrete.
• Section remains uncracked under service loads.
• Reduction of steel corrosion.
• Increase in durability.
• Full section is utilized.

What is rebar used for?

A. Reinforcing bar, or rebar, is a common steel bar that is hot rolled and is used widely in the construction industry, especially for concrete reinforcement. Steel rebar is most commonly used as a tensioning device to reinforce concrete and other masonry structures to help hold the concrete in a compressed state.

What is difference between PSC and RCC girder?

Prestressed concrete sections are thinner and lighter than RCC sections, since high strength concrete and steel are used prestressed concrete. In prestressed concrete, whole concrete area is effective in resisting loads, unlike RCC where concrete below the neutral axis is neglected.

Can a post tension slab be repaired?

Post tension (PT) tendon systems are primarily used for large slab construction projects. Since the early 1950's, post tension tendons have been used in the design of concrete structures. ... For such critical structural element, the repair should only be completed using a certified, experienced repair contractor.

How long does post tension slab last?

Conventional concrete & rebar foundations last about 20-30 years before failure begins to occur. Post-tension slabs are lasting about 15-20 years and are failing at a much higher rate. Post-tension slabs are created with concrete trenches around the perimeter of the house where the external walls will be placed.

What is a post tensioned concrete slab?

Post-tension concrete slabs are used to create a monolithic (single pour) slab that is stronger than a traditional slab without reinforcement. This is achieved by laying out high-strength steel cables in a crisscrossed grid pattern throughout the foundation prior to pouring the concrete.

What is concrete shrinkage?

Definition: decrease in either length or volume of a material resulting from changes in moisture content or chemical changes.- ACI Concrete Terminology. Drying shrinkage is the contraction in the concrete caused by moisture loss from drying concrete.
