Nasogastric aspiration (suction) is the process of draining the stomach's contents via the tube. Nasogastric aspiration is mainly used to remove gastrointestinal secretions and swallowed air in patients with gastrointestinal obstructions.

Why do we aspirate NG tube?

Facilitate free drainage and aspiration of the stomach contents. Facilitate venting/decompression of the stomach.

Does an NG tube suction?

These tubes are narrower and smaller bored than a Salem sump or Levine tube. An NG tube can also remove gastric content, either draining the stomach by gravity or by being connected to a suction pump.

Why is NG tube on low intermittent suction?

When using for suction, intermittent suction is used to prevent the tube from adhering to the gut wall. Prolonged use of these tubes may result in stiffening of the tube which may increase risk of perforation. Replace tube every 72 hours (manufacturer's recommendation).

Does ng suction cause hypokalemia?

Gastrointestinal Losses

Upper GI losses from vomiting or from nasogastric (NG) suction are frequently associated with hypokalemia, although they are rarely responsible for the total depletion seen. The gastric concentration of potassium ranges from 5 to 10 mEq/L.

What pH should NG aspirate?

The pH reading should be between 1-5.5. However, if you obtain a result of between 5-6 do not administer anything down the nasogastric tube. You must telephone your nurse or managing healthcare professional for further advice because the aspirate reading will need to be reconfirmed.

How do you know if NGT is in the lungs?

Locating the tip of the tube after passing the diaphragm in the midline and checking the length to support the tube present in the stomach are methods to confirm correct tube placement. Any deviation at the level of carina may be an indication of inadvertent placement into the lungs through the right or left bronchus.

What is nasogastric aspiration?

Aspirates. Nasogastric aspiration is the process of feeding a nasogastric tube into the stomach of a patient and draining the stomach contents by suction.

Who needs nasogastric tube?

If you can't eat or swallow, you may need to have a nasogastric tube inserted. This process is known as nasogastric (NG) intubation. During NG intubation, your doctor or nurse will insert a thin plastic tube through your nostril, down your esophagus, and into your stomach.

What is nasogastric decompression?

By inserting a nasogastric tube, you are gaining access to the stomach and its contents. This enables you to drain gastric contents, decompress the stomach, obtain a specimen of the gastric contents, or introduce a passage into the GI tract. This will allow you to treat gastric immobility, and bowel obstruction.

Does NG tube prevent aspiration?

A nasogastric tube (NGT) is frequently used for patients who are at risk of endotracheal aspiration of oral diet. However, this cannot eliminate the aspiration of saliva. The incidence of aspiration pneumonia in patients with NGT therefore remains high.

What are 3 complications of caring for the person with a nasogastric tube?

common complications include sinusitis, sore throat and epistaxis. more serious complications include luminal perforation, pulmonary injury, aspiration, and intracranial placement.

What happens if NG tube goes into lung?

The tube may enter the lungs Because of the proximity of the larynx to the oesophagus, the nasogastric tube may enter the larynx and trachea (Lo et al, 2008). This may cause a pneumothorax (Zausig et al, 2008). When the tube is in the airway, it will cause severe irritation and cough.

How will you confirm the correct position of the NGT?

1. The chest X-ray viewing field should include the upper oesophagus and extend to below the diaphragm.
2. The NG tube should remain in the midline down to the level of the diaphragm.
3. The NG tube should bisect the carina.

What is the normal gastric pH?

The normal volume of the stomach fluid is 20 to 100 mL and the pH is acidic (1.5 to 3.5). These numbers are converted to actual acid production in units of milliequivalents per hour (mEq/hr) in some cases.

What would a gastric pH of 4 or lower indicate?

A pH of 4 has been defined as a threshold below which refluxed gastric contents become injurious to the oesophagus.

What pH values are basic?

As this diagram shows, pH ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. pHs less than 7 are acidic while pHs greater than 7 are alkaline (basic).

Can NG tube cause coughing?

Problems that occur when putting in the NG tube include choking, coughing, trouble breathing and turning pale. Problems that occur during feeding can include vomiting and stomach bloating.

How do you prevent NG tube complications?

Prevention is key. Preventing mechanical complications of feeding tubes helps ensure your patient receives proper nutrition and hydration intake. Important interventions include monitoring tube location frequently, securing the tube, flushing the tube regularly, and using proper medication administration technique.

What is the most common problem in tube feeding?

Diarrhea. The most common reported complication of tube feeding is diarrhea, defined as stool weight > 200 mL per 24 hours.

Can you drink water with an NG tube?

You may be able to still eat and drink whilst you have NG tube as long as you do not have any swallowing difficulties.

How do you measure NGT before insertion?

Estimate the length of insertion by measuring the distance from the tip of the nose, around the ear, and down to just below the left costal margin. This point can be marked with a piece of tape on the tube.

What is the best position to prevent aspiration?

Body positions that minimize aspiration include the reclining position, chin down, head rotation, side inclination, the recumbent position, and combinations of these. Patients with severe dysphagia often use a 30° reclining position.

How do you prevent NG tube aspiration?

1. Sit up straight when tube feeding, if you can.
2. If you're getting your tube feeding in bed, use a wedge pillow to lift yourself up. ...
3. Stay in an upright position (at least 45 degrees) for at least 1 hour after you finish your tube feeding (see Figure 1).
