The holes in the sonometer box provides a way so that vibrations from the tuning fork (which is excited near the sonometer) is transferred to the inside of the sonometer box. ... Hence holes are provided to the sonometer box to communicate the frequency of vibration of the string to the inside hollow portion of the box ...

Why is the box of Sonometer kept hollow?

When the stem of a vibrating tunning fork is gently pressed agains the top face of sonometer box, the air enclosed in the box also vibrates. This increases the intensity of sound. The holes bring the inside air in contact with the outside air and check the effect of elastic fatigue.

What is the function of hollow wooden box in Sonometer?

The holes in the box of the sonometer provide a way for vibrations to be transmitted to the inside of the box of the sonometer from the tuning fork exited near the sonometer. The sonometer box is therefore supplied with holes to transmit the vibration frequency of the string to the inside hollow part of the box.

What is the function of Sonometer board?

Sonometer is basically used to study the relationship between frequency, tension , linear mass density and length of a stretched string. A Sonometer is a device based on the principle of Resonance. It is used to verify the laws of vibration of stretched string and also to determine the frequency of a tuning fork.

What type of waves are produced in Sonometer wire?

The waves produced in a sonometer can be defined as a standing wave.

SONOMETER

Why is Sonometer called Sonometer?

Answer: Sonometre is made from two words Sono + metre. Sono means sound. Thus sonometre is an device used to measure frequency of sound wave.

What is a Sonometer wire?

The string wire of the sonometer is a non-magnetic metallic wire like brass or copper. ... Then the resonance takes place and the wire vibrates with maximum amplitude. At this stage, the length of the wire segment is called the resonating length and it increases with increase in the mass of the suspended weights.

What is Sonometer box?

The sonometer is a long hollow wooden box along the top of which are stretched one or more strings rigidly attached to the box at one end, with provision at the other for changing their tension. If there is just one string, it's known as a monochord.

Can we use iron wire in Sonometer?

In this case the resonant frequency is equal to the frequency of the alternating current. Sonometer wire need not be made of soft iron. You can use constantan or manganin wire for this purpose.

How are stationary waves produced in the Sonometer wire?

When a string under tension is set into vibration, a transverse progressive wave moves towards the end of the wire and gets reflected. Thus stationary waves are formed. The sonometer consists of a hollow sounding box about a metre long. ... A transverse stationary wave is set up in the wire.

What happen when the paper rider in the Sonometer experiment flies off?

What happen when the paper rider in the sonometer experiment flies off? Frequency of wire between the bridges becomes zero. Frequency of wire between the bridges becomes much less than that of the tuning fork. ... Frequency of wire between the bridges becomes much greater than that of the tuning fork.

Why do we keep frequency constant?

Most recent answer

The frequency of the system is a constant because it is essentially the square root of stiffness divided by mass with some variation due to boundary conditions. As long as these remain constant, so will the frequency.

Why does the paper rider fall in Sonometer experiment?

At resonance, the amplitude of vibration of string is maximum and rider placed over it loses its contact from string and falls down.

What forced vibration?

Forced vibration is a type of vibration in which a force is repeatedly applied to a mechanical system. ... Forced vibration is when an alternating force or motion is applied to a mechanical system, for example when a washing machine shakes due to an imbalance.

What is fundamental mode of vibration?

The fundamental may be created by vibration over the full length of a string or air column, or a higher harmonic chosen by the player. ... The fundamental is the frequency at which the entire wave vibrates. Overtones are other sinusoidal components present at frequencies above the fundamental.

What is the function of bridges in Sonometer?

The sonometer allows accurate variation of the tension in the wire, by hanging a series of masses from the end arm, and the length of the wire by moving the bridges. μ may also be varied by using different wire thicknesses. A pickup coil is used to detect the vibrations.

Why is steel wire used in Sonometer?

Its tension may be adjusted by a wrest pin. The wires are made of steel to avoid rust. The distance between the fixed bridges is 720 mm.

Why is the wire non magnetic in Sonometer?

The string wire of the sonometer is a non-magnetic metallic wire like brass or copper. ... By adjusting the length of the vibrating wire segment, this frequency can be made equal to the natural frequency of the wire segment. Then the resonance takes place and the wire vibrates with maximum amplitude.

Why current is low in ammeter?

Just like voltmeters, ammeters tend to influence the amount of current in the circuits they're connected to. However, unlike the ideal voltmeter, the ideal ammeter has zero internal resistance, so as to drop as little voltage as possible as current flows through it.

What is Sonometer explain?

A sonometer is defined as. The device that is used for demonstrating the relationship between the frequency of the sound that is produced by the string when it is plucked and the tension, length, and mass per unit length of the string.

What is mean by Sonu Metre?

Definitions of sonometer. an instrument used to measure the sensitivity of hearing. synonyms: audiometer. type of: measuring device, measuring instrument, measuring system.

How does the Sonometer work?

A sonometer consists of a hollow rectangular wooden box to which a uniform wire is attached at one end. ... The frequency of vibration of the wire can be varied by either changing the positions of the knife edges by changing the vibrating length or by placing different weights in the pan by changing the tension.

What is Sonometer give its use?

Sonometer is used for sound-related measurements. Using this device, The following quantities can be determined. The frequency of the tuning fork or frequency of the alternating current.

Does sound travel in vacuum?

Sound does not travel at all in space. The vacuum of outer space has essentially zero air. Because sound is just vibrating air, space has no air to vibrate and therefore no sound.
