Well, they come from the Greek encephalon, the word for "brain", from and en- "in" and cephalon "head"; so "that which is in the head — the brain".

What is encephalon mean?

Encephalon -um: the brain, or that part of the head containing it.

Is encephalon same as brain?

is that brain is the control center of the central nervous system of an animal located in the skull which is responsible for perception, cognition, attention, memory, emotion, and action while encephalon is (neuroanatomy) the area of central nervous system that includes all higher nervous centers, enclosed within the ...

What is mesencephalon and diencephalon?

Mesencephalon (midbrain) is continuous with the diencephalon rostrally and with the pons caudally. The midbrain is the smallest part of the brain stem, being about 2 cm in length. It consists of a tectum posteriorly, a tegmentum inferiorly, and a base anteriorly.

What is derived from telencephalon?

From the telencephalon derive the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, hippocampal formation, amygdala and olfactory bulb. From the diencephalon the thalamus and surrounding nuclei, hypothalamus, retina and optic nerve. The mesencephalon gives rise to the midbrain structures, and the metencephalon the pons and cerebellum.

Encephalon Meaning

Is the neocortex part of the telencephalon?

The telencephalon (or cerebrum) consists of two cerebral hemispheres plus a small mid-line component called lamina terminalis. ... Superficial gray matter of the cerebral hemisphere is called cerebral cortex (most of the cortex is neocortex, in contrast to old paleocortex of the piriform lobe).

Is the parietal lobe in the telencephalon?

Telencephalon - Fissures, Lobes and Sulci

A mid-sagittal cut through the longitudinal fissure is used to produce two hemisected brains. Each cerebral hemisphere is organized into five lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal and insula. ... This groove separates the temporal lobe from the parietal lobe.

What is the function of the telencephalon?

The telencephalon is the part of the brain which attributes motor function to the body. These functions originate within the primary motor cortex and other frontal lobe motor area.

What creates mesencephalon?

midbrain, also called mesencephalon, region of the developing vertebrate brain that is composed of the tectum and tegmentum. The midbrain serves important functions in motor movement, particularly movements of the eye, and in auditory and visual processing.

Is the mesencephalon part of the brainstem?

The portion of brain remaining after the cerebrum and cerebellum are removed is referred to as the brainstem. Brainstem = diencephalon, mesencephalon, pons of the metencephalon, and myelencephalon. The embryonic neural cavity develops into a brain ventricular system.

Which part of the body does the term encephalon refer to?

brain. ... The brain is a mass of soft, spongy, pinkish gray nerve tissue that weighs about 1.2 kg in a human being. It is connected at its base with the spinal cord, which is also part of the central nervous system. Called also encephalon.

What is this cerebrum?

(seh-REE-brum) The largest part of the brain. It is divided into two hemispheres, or halves, called the cerebral hemispheres. Areas within the cerebrum control muscle functions and also control speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing, and learning.

How do you use encephalon in a sentence?

noun. The brain. 'Not being accustomed to balking at obtaining a solution despite significant difficulties offered, I put my massive encephalon to this task. '

What is the meaning of Pathy?

pathy: A suffix derived from the Greek "pathos" meaning "suffering or disease" that serves as a suffix in many terms including myopathy (muscle disease), neuropathy (nerve disease), retinopathopathy (disease of the retina), sympathy (literally, suffering together), etc.

Where is the Encephalon located?

The encephalon is the central part of the CNS that is enclosed and protected by the skill. The spinal cord is a long, whitish cord that is located in the vertebral canal and connects the encephalon to the rest of the body.

What is structure of mesencephalon?

Mesencephalon or midbrain is part of the brain stem which is located between the hindbrain and the forebrain. It has two main parts. ... Namely, those include the substantia nigra, cerebral nerves, the cerebral peduncle, and the crus cerebri.

What is the cavity of the mesencephalon?

The cavity of the mesencephalon forms the cerebral aqueduct. The dilation of the neural canal within the rhombencephalon forms the fourth ventricle.

What happens if the mesencephalon is damaged?

Damage to the midbrain can result in a wide variety of movement disorders, difficulty with vision and hearing, and trouble with memory. Because the midbrain houses the hypothalamus, it also plays a major role in automatic body functions.

Is the temporal lobe in the telencephalon?

The lobes of the cerebral cortex include the frontal (blue), temporal (green), occipital (red), and parietal (yellow) lobes . The cerebellum (unlabeled) is not part of the telencephalon. Diagram depicting the main subdivisions of the embryonic vertebrate brain.

Is the frontal lobe in the telencephalon?

The telencephalon consists of 2 hemispheres, with 6 major lobes per hemisphere. ... The 6 major lobes comprise the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, insular lobe, and limbic lobe. In addition, each hemisphere has 3 surfaces and 2 borders.

What is the human telencephalon?

The cerebrum or telencephalon is the largest portion of the human brain. It consists of three key segments, the cortex, the white matter, and the subcortical structures. Also, it has a well-known segmentation to two hemispheres, the right and the left one.

Is the basal ganglia in the telencephalon?

The basal ganglia comprise a distributed set of brain structures in the telencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon (Figure 4.1 and Table 1). The forebrain structures include the caudate nucleus, the putamen, the nucleus accumbens (or ventral striatum) and the globus pallidus.

Is the prefrontal cortex in the telencephalon?

Thus, the cerebral cortex is part of the telencephalon---as are all of the divisions of the cerebral cortex like the prefrontal cortex, motor cortex, somatosensory cortex, occipital cortex, and so on. ... The telencephalon is too large an area of the brain to try to link it with a function or short list of functions.

Is the amygdala located in the telencephalon?

In addition to the cortex and its recognizable features, there are a large number of subcortical structures that are considered part of the telencephalon. These include the hippocampus, amygdala, and a majority of the regions included in the basal ganglia, among others.
