Mica minerals have perfect basal cleavage which makes it easy to separate them into many thin folia. ... Most biotite group minerals are black in color, although the color gets lighter (brownish) if the sheet is thin enough for the light to penetrate it.

Why is biotite dark?

Physical Properties

Its streak is white or gray, and it has a vitreous luster. The physical properties of biotite are affected by the amount of iron present. The specific gravity (G) is greater with increasing iron content, while the color in hand sample is darker with an increase in iron.

Is biotite light or dark?

The color of biotite is usually black and the mineral has a hardness of 2.5–3 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.

What is the black mica?

biotite, also called black mica, a silicate mineral in the common mica group. It is abundant in metamorphic rocks (both regional and contact), in pegmatites, and also in granites and other intrusive igneous rocks. ... Biotite is arbitrarily designated as having a magnesium-to-iron ratio less than 2:1.

Is mica Black?

Muscovite, the common light-coloured mica, and biotite, which is typically black or nearly so, are the most abundant. Phlogopite, typically brown, and paragonite, which is macroscopically indistinguishable from muscovite, also are fairly common.

Crystal & Mineral Education: BIOTITE AKA BLACK MICA

Why is biotite used in paint?

In paint, ground micas, including biotite, help form a water resistant coating while also keeping the film from shrinking. In the rubber industry, sheet micas are often used as a mold release agent in products such as tires (2.)

What is color of biotite?

Color - generally pleochroic, typically in shades of brown, but also can be yellow, green or red. Common biotite is one of the most strongly colored minerals seen in thin section. For biotite with low Fe-content (phlogopite), coloration is more subtle (clear, light browns and tans).

What is the colour of biotite schist?

3. What is the colour of biotite schist? Explanation: Since the biotite is metamorphosed to form biotite-schist, the colour is not changed much and hence the colour of biotite-schist is also black.

What is the difference in the color of biotite and muscovite mica?

Muscovite is clear, silvery, or coppery silver in color (depending on the thickness of the sample and presence of impurities) whereas fresh biotite is black.

What color is potassium feldspar?

Potassium feldspars (or K-feldspars) contain potassium, and color is commonly pink to reddish, but otherwise white, gray, yellowish, or pale green (amazonite variety). Plagioclase feldspars contain varying amounts of calcium and/or sodium, and color is commonly white or gray.

How is biotite granite formed?

In metamorphosed mafic rocks biotite forms as a replacement of low-grade greenschist facies metamorphic rocks containing amphiboles and muscovite. They react to form biotite + quartz + water. It finally breaks down to form granulitic rock composed of pyroxene + K-feldspars.

How can you tell chlorite and biotite apart?

Chlorite is generally green, but can be other colors. Biotite is generally dark brown to black but can also be greenish gray to greenish black if it has a high ferrous iron content. Chlorite is flexible but not elastic. Cleavage flakes will bend and remain bent.

Why is color not a good diagnostic property?

Generally, color alone is not the best tool in identification because color can be highly variable. Some minerals can occur in a variety of different colors due to impurities in the chemical makeup of the mineral.

Where is biotite mica found?

Mica group minerals have an uneven fracture characteristic. Uses: Location: Biotite is found in many rocks around the world. Noteable deposits are found in Evje, Norway; Bessnes, France; Uluguru mountains in Tanzania; Ontario, Canada; and Laacher See, Germany.

What colour is calcite?

Calcite is colourless or white when pure but may be of almost any colour—reddish, pink, yellow, greenish, bluish, lavender, black, or brown—owing to the presence of diverse impurities. It may be transparent, translucent, or opaque.

Is biotite valuable?

Biotite is a common rock forming mineral, being present in at least some percentage in most igneous and both regional and contact metamorphic rocks. ... Biotite is rarely considered a valuable mineral specimen, but it can accompany other minerals and compliment them.

What is the texture of biotite?

This rock is mostly composed of creamy-white feldspar and quartz, together with dark minerals, of which the most abundant is the dark mica biotite. The dark minerals are arranged in a streaky banding, giving the rock a gneissic texture.

Is biotite magnetic?

At low temperature (T < 10 K), three of the biotite samples containing high concentrations of iron (17 to 27 wt. ... Thus, biotite has both magnetic and structural two-dimensional aspects. We also have observed magnetic aftereffect, and some parasitic ferromagnetism below the transition.

How is biotite mined?

Biotite is occasionally found in large sheets, especially in pegmatite veins, as in New England, Virginia, and North Carolina. Other notable occurrences include Bancroft and Sudbury, Ontario. It is mined by quarrying or underground mining, depending on its depth of occurrence.

Does biotite have 1 cleavage plane?

Mica (e.g. biotite, chlorite or muscovite) has one cleavage plane, feldspar (e.g. orthoclase or plagioclase) has two which intersect at 90°, and amphibole (e.g. hornblende) has two which do not intersect at 90°. Calcite has three cleavage planes which do not intersect at 90°.

Why is biotite mica important?

Biotite is used to determine the age of rock through the process of argon-argon dating or potassium-argon dating. Biotite can be used to determine the minimum age of rock and profile its temperature history. Sheet mica is important in the electronics industry as an electrical and thermal insulator.

What is feldspar used for?

The term feldspar encompasses a whole range of materials. Most of the products we use on a daily basis are made with feldspar: glass for drinking, glass for protection, fiberglass for insulation, the floor tiles and shower basins in our bathrooms, and the tableware from which we eat. Feldspar is part of our daily life.

What is pyrite used for?

Pyrite is used to create iron sulfate that is used to make nutritional supplements, ink, lawn conditioner, water treatment and flocculation, moss killer, and many other chemical processes.
