Over time, ballast becomes worn, and loses its angularity, becoming rounded. ... This hinders both track drainage and the flexibility of the ballast to constrain the track as it moves under traffic. Ballast cleaning removes this worn ballast, screens it and replaces the "dirty" worn ballast with fresh ballast.

Why do they clean ballast?

As pointed out by a maintenance officer of one of the country's leading railroads, the cleaning of stone ballast improves the drainage by removing the dirt and opening up the voids between the stones.

How do train tracks stay clean?

Ballast is what they call the bed of gravel or other aggregate that sits underneath train tracks, holding everything in place and absorbing the energy of rail traffic. Over time, through, impurities in the ballast can impair its effectiveness.

What is ballast shoulder?

ballast shoulder: The ballast each side of the railway track. ballast shoulder height: Height of the shoulder ballast above the sleeper base as measured at the end of the sleeper. ... CMC 'Glossary for NCOP and Dictionary of Railway Terminology'.

What is a loram ballast cleaner?

A Loram shoulder ballast cleaning program ensures a healthy, robust railroad infrastructure maintained to deliver maximum ROI. ... Integrated scarifiers break open end of tie mud pockets, removes fines, and restores ballast voids in the shoulders and under the tie ends and release damaging trapped water.

Why do they grind railroad tracks?

A railgrinder (or rail grinder) is a maintenance of way vehicle or train used to restore the profile and remove irregularities from worn tracks to extend its life and to improve the ride of trains using the track. Rail grinders were developed to increase the lifespan of the tracks being serviced for rail corrugation.

What is the function of ballast?

Functions of Ballast

It provides levelled bed or support for the railway sleepers. It transfers the load from sleepers to subgrade and distributes the load uniformly on subgrade. It holds the sleepers in a firm position while the trains pass by. It prevents the longitudinal and lateral movement of sleepers.

What is the function of ballast in fluorescent lamp?

In a fluorescent lighting system, the ballast regulates the current to the lamps and provides sufficient voltage to start the lamps. Without a ballast to limit its current, a fluorescent lamp connected directly to a high voltage power source would rapidly and uncontrollably increase its current draw.

What do you mean by ballast in permanent way?

In a permanent way, rails are joined either by welding or by using fish plates and are fixed with sleepers by using different types of fastenings. Sleepers are properly placed and packed with ballast. Ballast is placed in the prepared subgrade called formation.

What are the advantages of track maintenance?

(a) If the track is suitably maintained, the life of the track as well as that of the rolling stock increases since there is lesser wear and tear of their components. (b) Regular track maintenance helps in reducing operating costs and fuel consumption.

How do you get rust off of model railway tracks?

Apply some White Vinegar to a cloth until it's damp. Wipe down all your train tracks with the cloth, until the rust or grime has gone. Use another damp cloth with water to go back over the top of the tracks and remove the vinegar.

What is a ballast in a boat?

Ballast is material that is used to provide stability to a vehicle or structure. ... A compartment within a boat, ship, submarine, or other floating structure that holds water is called a ballast tank. Water should move in and out from the ballast tank to balance the ship.

Where does railroad ballast come from?

Ballast is produced from natural deposits of granite, trap rock, quartzite, dolomite or limestone.

What are the signs of a bad ballast?

• Buzzing. If you hear a strange sound coming from your bulbs or light fixture, like a buzzing or humming noise, that's often a sign your ballast is going. ...
• Dimming or flickering. ...
• No lights at all. ...
• Changing colors. ...
• Swollen casing. ...
• Burn marks. ...
• Water damage. ...
• Leaking oil.

What happens when fluorescent ballast goes bad?

But there is a good chance your ballast could be the cause of your lighting woes if your lights are dim, buzzing, changing colors, or flickering rapidly. You should check all parts of the fixture, including the bulbs. ... If the bulbs fail to light up, then 9 out of 10 times the ballast is culprit.

Do Fluorescent lights need a ballast?

Incandescent and halogen lamps do not require a ballast. Like we mentioned, you just screw them into the socket, and you're done. Fluorescent lamps and HID (high intensity discharge) light bulbs do require a ballast. Both lamp families use two different types of ballasts: magnetic and electronic.

What do ships use for ballast?

A ballast tank is a compartment within a boat, ship or other floating structure that holds water, which is used as ballast to provide stability for a vessel. Using water in a tank provides easier weight adjustment than the stone or iron ballast used in older vessels.

What is used to clean and spread the ballast?

Wire Claw: Used to clean the ballast. Powarah: Used to spread the ballast properly.

Which is the best material to be used as ballast?

The stone to be used as railway ballast should be hard, tough nonporous and should not decompose when exposed to air and light. Igneous rocks like quartzite and granite forms the excellent ballast materials. When these are not available then lime stone and sand stone can also be used as good ballast material.

What is creep in railway?

Creep of Rail is defined as a longitudional movement of rail with respect to sleeper. Rail have the tendency to gradually move in the direction of dominant traffic. The creep of rail is common to all railway tracks and its value varies from almost nothing in some cases to about 130 mm/ month in creep.

What is rolling contact fatigue rail?

Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is a group of rail damages which manifest themselves on the surface or close to surface inside the rails due to overstressing of the rail material. ... Two main physical processes that govern the development of RCF defects are crack initiation and crack propagation in the rails.

What is buckling of rail?

Track buckling is formation of large lateral misalignments in continuous welded rail (CWR) track, often resulting in catastrophic derailments. ... Buckles are typically caused by a combination of three major factors: high compressive forces, weakened track conditions, and vehicle loads (train dynamics).

What is track cleaning fluid?

TRACK MAGIC. ... Deluxe Materials Track Magic is a special cleaning fluid designed for cleaning model railway track, locomotive wheels and pickups and also for cleaning slot car metal tracks. Track Magic cleans metal parts to maximize their conductivity and it also improves the reliability of the flow of electrical current ...
