Today sulfuric acid sulfonation is principally used for production of hydrotropes by azeotropic reaction with benzene, toluene or xylene. In this special process, the water formed during the reaction is removed by azeotropic distillation of the water and unreacted feedstock.

How does sulfonation work?

Sulfonation is a reversible reaction that produces benzenesulfonic acid by adding sulfur trioxide and fuming sulfuric acid. The reaction is reversed by adding hot aqueous acid to benzenesulfonic acid to produce benzene.

Is the appropriate reason for Sulphonation of alkane?

(b) Sulphonation of alkane: The process which involves the replacement of hydrogen atom of alkanes with a sulphonic acid group (-SO₃H) is known as sulphonation of alkane. It is carried out by heating higher alkanes (hexane or higher members) with fuming sulphuric acid.

What is the meaning of sulfonation?

The replacement of the hydrogen atom of an organic compound with sulfonic acid (-SO3H) functional group, often by the reaction with sulfuric acid at higher temperatures, is called Sulphonation. “The introduction of a sulfonic acid group into an aromatic compound is referred to as sulphonation.”

What is the purpose of nitration of methyl benzoate?

The purpose of this reaction it's to perform a nitration reaction on methyl benzoate to create a product of 3-nitro methyl benzoate. Within a nitration reaction it is typical to see electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions occur. It is important to note the characteristics of an aromatic structure.

Sulfonation of Benzene & Desulfonation Reaction Mechanism - Aromatic Compounds

Why is methyl benzoate used instead of benzene?

Methylbenzene reacts rather faster than benzene - in nitration, the reaction is about 25 times faster. That means that you would use a lower temperature to prevent more than one nitro group being substituted - in this case, 30°C rather than 50°C.

What is the purpose of pouring the reaction mixture over ice?

The reaction mixture is poured over ice to precipitate the crude product. Ice is used because the reaction of concentrated acids, especially concentrated sulfuric acid, with water is very exothermic. This would lead to the hydrolysis of the ester function during this step.

What is Sulphonation explain with example?

Sulphonation is a reversible reaction that produces benzenesulfonic acid by adding sulphur trioxide and fuming sulphuric acid. The reaction is reversed by adding hot aqueous acid to benzene sulphonic acid to produce benzene.

What is meant by Oleum?

Oleum (Latin oleum, meaning oil), or fuming sulfuric acid, is a term referring to solutions of various compositions of sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid, or sometimes more specifically to disulfuric acid (also known as pyrosulfuric acid).

What do you mean by electrophilic substitution reaction?

Electrophilic substitution reactions are chemical reactions in which an electrophile displaces a functional group in a compound, which is typically, but not always, a hydrogen atom. ... Some aliphatic compounds can undergo electrophilic substitution as well.

What is the electrophile in Sulphonation reaction?

The electrophile is sulphur trioxide, and this arises in one of two ways depending on which sort of acid you are using. Concentrated sulphuric acid contains traces of SO₃ due to slight dissociation of the acid.

What is the use of sulfonates in organic chemistry?

Sulfonic esters are used as reagents in organic synthesis, chiefly because the RSO₃⁻ group is a good leaving group, especially when R is electron-withdrawing. Methyl triflate, for example, is a strong methylating reagent.

Why lower alkanes do not undergo Sulphonation?

Lower alkanes will not undergo sulphonation because of the reason that the intermediate formed in the sulphonation of lower alkanes was very unstable, whereas higher alkanes forms stable intermediate.

What is the mechanism of Sulphonation of benzene?

The mechanism for Sulfonation of benzene

Due to higher electronegativity, oxygen present in sulphuric acid pulls an electron towards itself, generating an electrophile. This attacks the benzene ring, leading to the formation of benzenesulfonic acid.

What is the electrophile in aromatic sulfonation?

Sulfur trioxide or its protonated derivative is the actual electrophile in this electrophilic aromatic substitution.

How does electrophilic aromatic substitution work?

Electrophilic aromatic substitution is an organic reaction in which an atom that is attached to an aromatic system (usually hydrogen) is replaced by an electrophile.

What is oleum with example?

Oleum, or fuming sulfuric acid refers to a solution of various compositions of sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid, or sometimes more specifically to disulfuric acid. Oleums can be described by the formula ySO3. ... For example, 10% oleum can also be expressed as H2SO4. 0.10889SO3, 1.0225SO3. H2O or 102.25% sulfuric acid.

Why is oleum used in the contact process?

The sulfur trioxide formed is added to sulfuric acid which gives rise to oleum (disulfuric acid) The oleum is then added to water to form sulfuric acid which is very concentrated. Since this process is an exothermic reaction, the reaction temperature should be as low as possible.

What is Sulphonation plant?

Sulphonation is used for processing in the same reactor other organic bases such as fatty alcohols, pure or more often ethoxylated, or C₁₂ – C₁₈ alpha olefins (AO). ... Various chain lengths alpha olefins, typically C₁₂ – C₁₈, may be sulphonated in the multi-tube film reactor and afterwards neutralized.

What is Electrophile in Sulphonation of benzene?

The electrophile involved in the sulphonation of benzene is SO3.

What is meant by condensation procedure in sulfonation?

Explanation: Condensation procedures refer to the reaction of organic sulfonate “building blocks” (such as HOCH2CH2S03Na) with other organic compounds (such as long-chain acid chlorides) to form new sulfonates with altered properties, these methods include sulfoalkylation. 7.

Why do you add ice cold water to the sample of reaction mixture before titration in acid hydrolysis of ester?

The dilution with water arrests the reaction somewhat, but the solution should be titrated at once. The error can be further minimized by chilling the water in an ice bath. The time at which the pipette has been half emptied into the water of the titration flask is recorded accurately together with the titration.

What is the role of diluting in cold water?

Dilution is not only an inevitable part of chilling a drink with ice—it's essential. ... That's because ice doesn't directly transfer its cold to a surrounding liquid. Instead heat, or energy, is drawn from the water and used to melt the surface of the ice.

Why reaction mixture is added into ice cold water before titration?

The reaction can be slowed by diluting it, adding the sample to a larger volume of cold water before the titration. Then the titration is performed as quickly as possible. This is most effective if the reaction is carried out above room temperature. Cooling it as well as diluting it slows it down even more.
