They provide structural support and deter predators. Large spiculesthat are visible to the naked eye are referred to as megascleres, while smaller, microscopic ones are termed microscleres.

Why are spicules and spongin are important to sponges?

Spongin and spicules provide support and support the soft body parts of the sponges. The spicules give the sponges rigidity and form to the sponges.

Is spongin a Spicule?

The exoskeleton of sponges (so, the parts that you see) are composed of a mixture of spongin and/or spicules. Spongin is a modified type of collagen protein, and forms the "fibers" or "mortar" that hold spicules together. ... Spicules are composed of either Calcium or Silica.

What are spicules and Spongins what are its role in the Poriferan body?

Amoebocytes can also give rise to sclerocytes, which produce spicules (skeletal spikes of silica or calcium carbonate) in some sponges, and spongocytes, which produce the protein spongin in the majority of sponges. ... Porocytes control the flow of water through pores in the sponge body.

What is the purpose of spicules in sponges?

Tiny spicules help make the sponge's body rigid. They interlock to provide support like the bones in familiar animals. Animation helps visualize how the elaborate shapes of the microscopic spicules could help give the sponge's body structure.

What is the function of spongin?

Spongin, a modified type of collagen protein, forms the fibrous skeleton of most organisms among the phylum Porifera, the sponges. It is secreted by sponge cells known as spongocytes. Spongin gives a sponge its flexibility. True spongin is found only in members of the class Demospongiae.

What are some possible functions of spicules and spongin How are these sponge parts alike and different?

Answer: Spongin and sponge spicules are the skeletal structures of the sponge body. Like all skeletons, they support the soft tissues of the body. The sharp spicules and the softer spongin are arranged in a complex three-dimensional latticework that holds up the cells and gives the sponge its shape.

What is the function of mesohyl?

The mesohyl acts as a type of endoskeleton, helping to maintain the tubular shape of sponges.

What holds sponge cells together and is common to all animals?

The body of the sponge is a loose collection of about six different types of specialized cells. Some of these cells secrete a supporting skeleton either of collagen fibers or of tiny, sharp mineral pieces called spicules. Collagen is a protein found in all animals that helps hold cells together.

What role do Amoebocytes play?

Amoebocytes have a variety of functions: delivering nutrients from choanocytes to other cells within the sponge, giving rise to eggs for sexual reproduction (which remain in the mesohyl), delivering phagocytized sperm from choanocytes to eggs, and differentiating into more-specific cell types.

Which of the following is a Triaxon Spicule?

Amphidisc are spicules which have disc at both ends. Triaxon: Triaxon spicule has three axes that cross one another at right angles to produce six-rays. These are found only in class Hexactinellida. Tetraxon spicules consist of four rays radiating from a common point.

How are Spongin fibers formed?

Spongin fibers are secreted by flask-shaped mesenchyme cells called as spongioblast cells. During the development the spongioblast cells are arranged in the rows and the spongin rods secreted by them are fused with the neighboring cells to form a long fiber.

What is a Choanocyte and what does it do?

Choanocytes are specialized cells that have a single flagellum surrounded by a net-like collar of microvilli (Figure 3). ... The first is to create a flow of water and the second is to capture food items as they pass by these cells. The flow of water is initiated through the coordinated beating of flagella.

Why do sponges belong to Parazoans?

Sponge Parazoa

Sponge parazoans are unique invertebrate animals characterized by porous bodies. This interesting feature allows a sponge to filter food and nutrients from water as it passes through its pores.

Why sponges are considered as Parazoa?

Sponges belong to phylum Porifera (po-rif´-er-a) (L. porus, pore, + fera, bearing). Sponges bear myriads of tiny pores and canals that constitute a filterfeeding system adequate for their inactive life habit. ... For this reason they are often called Parazoa (Gr.

Why is a sponge an animal?

Sponges may have been the first multicellular animals. ... Most sponges are hermaphroditic (male and female cells exist in one animal) and reproduce sexually by releasing spermatozoan into the water current to be carried to other sponges, where they interact with eggs. Sponges can also reproduce asexually.

What is the importance of sponges in an ecosystem?

Sponges are critical components of the ecosystems of coral reefs, where they provide shelter for a variety of organisms including shrimp, crabs, and algae. They are also a source of food for many sponge-eating fish species. Many sponge species form large colonies or aggregates of individual organisms.

Why are sponges Colonial?

Sponges are often considered colonial organisms like the alga Volvox. The cells are so loosely associated that if you run a sponge through a filter and scramble the cells, they will re-associate easily to form another sponge.

What is the difference between mesohyl and mesoglea?

The main difference between mesoglea in cnidarians and mesohyl in poriferans is that mesoglea in cnidarians mainly composes of water and several substances including fibrous proteins, like collagen and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, whereas mesohyl in poriferans is a gelatinous matrix, mainly composing of collagen, ...

Is mesohyl and mesenchyme same?

The mesohyl, formerly known as mesenchyme or as mesoglea, is the gelatinous matrix within a sponge. ... The mesohyl resembles a type of connective tissue and contains several amoeboid cells such as amebocytes, as well as fibrils and skeletal elements.

Which of the following describes a Choanocyte?

Choanocytes are also called collar cells or flagellated cells. They form the inner lining of the spongocoel. This cell creates current . Also, they inject food particles from water.

How would a sponge in the class Hexactinellida differ from the sponge grantia?

Sycpha (Grantia) is a vase-shaped syconoid sponge that can live in colonies. ... Class Hexactinellida is referred to as the “glass sponge” because of the six-rayed siliceous spicules fused into an intricate glass-like lattice. Members of this class of sponges are primarily deep-water marine forms.

What is the difference between the Asconoid body plan and the Syconoid body plan?

The main difference between asconoid and syconoid body plans is that syconoid sponges have a row of tiny chambers, called radial canals, within their tissue that house their choanocytes.

How does a sponge's body structure affect its size?

How does a sponge's body structure affect its size? A sponge's size is directly related to its ability to circulate water through its body. Its body form determines this size. ... In this shape there are not enough collar cells to move enough water through the sponge to make it larger so these sponges stay small.

What does the spongin mean?

: a scleroprotein that is the chief constituent of flexible fibers found in certain sponge skeletons.
