The American polyconic projection was probably invented by Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler around 1825. It was commonly used by many map-making agencies of the United States from the time of its proposal until the middle of the 20th century.

What is Polyconic projection based on?

Description. The polyconic projection is also known as American polyconic or ordinary polyconic projection. The name translates into "many cones," and it is created by lining up an infinite number of cones along the central meridian. ... Unlike other conic projections, the meridians are curved rather than straight.

What are the uses of Polyconic projection?

Uses: The polyconic is a somewhat unusual projection that produces maps with a unique set of qualities. In the past, the projection was more highly regarded than it is today. Currently, the polyconic is considered suitable only for mapping relatively small areas near the projection's central meridian.

What is the sinusoidal projection used for?

Sinusoidal projection maps present accurate area and distance at every parallel and at the central meridian; distortion increases at the outer meridians and at high latitudes. It is often used in atlases to map Africa and South America.

What is a Polyconic chart?

pŏlē-kŏnĭk. A conic map projection having distances between meridians along every parallel equal to those distances on a globe. The central geographic meridian is a straight line, whereas the others are curved and the parallels are arcs of circles.

Where are Polyconic charts used?

Polyconic projection is extensively used for the quadrangle maps (familiarly called quad sheets) of areas of the United States published by the Geological Survey.

Where do parallels and meridians run on most maps?

Parallels on maps are the lines you see that are from left to right. The lines that run from top to bottom are meridians.

What is sinusoidal projection?

The sinusoidal projection is a pseudocylindrical equal-area projection displaying all parallels and the central meridian at true scale. ... The sinusoidal projection is also known as the Sanson-Flamsteed and Mercator-Sanson projection after the cartographers who used it. The projection was developed in the 16th century.

Who uses equal area projection?

USGS Uses the Albers Equal Area Conic Projection

The USGS commonly uses the Albers Equal Area Conic projection because of how it proportionally represents areas for the conterminous United States. Like all map projections, the Albers Equal Area Conic Projection distorts other properties in a map.

What is peculiar about Goode's Homolosine projection?

The Goode homolosine projection (or interrupted Goode homolosine projection) is a pseudocylindrical, equal-area, composite map projection used for world maps. Normally it is presented with multiple interruptions. Its equal-area property makes it useful for presenting spatial distribution of phenomena.

What is the difference between normal Mercator and Transverse Mercator?

The Mercator uses an upright cylinder for its map projection. The Transverse Mercator takes a cylinder and places it on its side (rotates it 90°), as pictured below – which is how the term “transverse” is derived. However, the Universal Transverse Mercator places this cylinder 60 times for each UTM zone.

What is zenithal map projection?

noun. a type of map projection in which part of the earth's surface is projected onto a plane tangential to it, either at one of the poles (polar zenithal), at the equator (equatorial zenithal), or between (oblique zenithal)

Does the Mercator projection distort direction?

Distortion. Mercator is a conformal map projection. Directions, angles, and shapes are maintained at infinitesimal scale. Any straight line drawn on this projection represents an actual compass bearing.

What is Gnomonic projection?

Gnomonic is an azimuthal projection that uses the center of the earth as its perspective point. It projects great circles as straight lines, regardless of the aspect. The projection is not conformal nor is it equal-area.

What is conformal projection used for?

A conformal projection is a map projection that favors preserving the shape of features on the map but may greatly distort the size of features.

What is a Mercator chart how was it made?

Mer·ca·tor projection

(mər-kā′tər) A method of making a flat map of the Earth's surface so that the meridians and parallels appear as straight lines that cross at right angles. In a Mercator projection, the areas farther from the equator appear larger, making the polar regions greatly distorted.

Who created the Equal Area Map?

The Equal Earth map projection is an equal-area pseudocylindrical projection for world maps, invented by Bojan Šavrič, Bernhard Jenny, and Tom Patterson in 2018. It is inspired by the widely used Robinson projection, but unlike the Robinson projection, retains the relative size of areas.

Who created the interrupted projection?

Buckminster Fuller proposed his "dymaxion" map in 1943, using a modified icosahedral interruption scheme to divide the oceans up in a way that shows the continents in a nearly continuous mass as "one island".

Why was the equal earth projection created?

It was created to provide a visually pleasing alternative to the Gall-Peters projection, which some schools and socially concerned groups have adopted out of concern for fairness. Their priority is to show developing countries in the tropics and developed countries in the north with correctly proportioned sizes.

What is the sinusoid?

sinusoid, irregular tubular space for the passage of blood, taking the place of capillaries and venules in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. The sinusoids form from branches of the portal vein in the liver and from arterioles (minute arteries) in other organs.

What is a Lambert map projection?

A Lambert conformal conic projection (LCC) is a conic map projection used for aeronautical charts, portions of the State Plane Coordinate System, and many national and regional mapping systems. ... Conceptually, the projection seats a cone over the sphere of the Earth and projects the surface conformally onto the cone.

Why do we use Mollweide projection?

Mollweide projection is commonly used in small-scale mapping and thematic maps to illustrate accurate area characteristics. Thus, it is used mainly on maps that require accurate areas as opposed to those requiring accurate shapes and angles. It can also be used to show distributions of global data.

How many meridians are there in the world?

There are 360 meridians- 180 to the east and 180 to the west of the Prime Meridian. The meridians in the Eastern Hemisphere are marked as 'E' and meridians in the Western Hemisphere are marked as 'W'.

Why longitudes are called meridians?

Longitudes are known as meridians because in Geographical sense, meridians are great circles which are not parallel to each other but intersect each other at the North and the South Poles. Same stands true of the longitudes. All longitudes are great circles which meet at the Poles.

Why are meridians not parallel?

The lines of longitudes are not parallel to each other because they come closer to each other as they approach the North and the South pole. At the poles, the meridians of longitudes meet each other.
