Studies to develop self-compacting concrete, including a fundamental study on the workability of concrete, were carried out by Ozawa and Maekawa at the University of Tokyo [1]. The prototype of self-compacting concrete was first completed in 1988 using materials already on the market.

When was the self compacted developed?

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) was first developed in 1988 to achieve more durable concrete structures [10], and since then it has been increasingly adopted by the construction industry.

Where is SCC used?

Generally, SCC is used for constructing reinforced concrete elements with closely arranged reinforcement sections, construction elements with limited compaction possibilities, filigree construction elements, exposed concrete parts where high surface quality is required, texture surfaced concrete construction elements, ...

Where do we use self-compacting concrete?

• Construction of raft and pile foundations.
• Retrofitting and repairing constructions.
• Structures with complex reinforcement distributions.
• Construction of earth retaining systems.
• Drilled shafts.
• Columns.

Why do we need self-compacting concrete?

Self-leveling, self-consolidating concrete reduces the labor required to place and finish it. It eliminates mechanical vibration and reduces screeding, Eliminating vibration in precast production settings reduces noise. In an urban setting, decreased noise may even allow for longer construction hours.

History of Self-Compacting Concrete [SCC]

What is SCC used for Amazon?

It covers the basic principles and underlying scientific theory, practical advice for production of SCC and its use in construction practice. It reviews all stages of the self-compacting concrete construction process are, from selection of materials, mix design and mixing process to transport, placing and finishing.

What is the strongest concrete?

Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a cementitious, concrete material that has a minimum specified compressive strength of 17,000 pounds per square inch (120 MPa) with specified durability, tensile ductility and toughness requirements; fibers are generally included in the mixture to achieve specified requirements ...

Who invented portland cement and in which year?

The inventor Joseph Aspdin, of England, patented the basic process in 1824, naming it for the resemblance of the cement when set to portland stone, a limestone from the Isle of Portland.

What does SCC mean in construction?

Self-consolidating concrete or self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a concrete mix which has a low yield stress, high deformability, good segregation resistance (prevents separation of particles in the mix), and moderate viscosity (necessary to ensure uniform suspension of solid particles during transportation, placement ...

What are the characteristics of self compacting concrete?

The three properties that characterise a concrete as self-compacting Concrete are Flowing ability—the ability to completely fill all areas and corners of the formwork into which it is placed Passing ability—the ability to pass through congested reinforcement without separation of the constituents or blocking Resistance ...

What is SCC mix?

Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is a highly fluid mixture designed to flow and consolidate under its own weight. The mixture is very cohesive and is capable of filling all types of spaces without segregation or bleeding.

What is self compacting concrete PDF?

Self-compacting concrete is a fluid mixture suitable for placing in structures with congested reinforcement without vibration. Self-compacting concrete development must ensure a good balance between deformability and stability.

How is the flowability of self compacting concrete is measured?

V funnel test on self compacting concrete is used to measure the flowability. But the flowability of concrete is affected by its other properties as well which may affect the flowability of the concrete during testing.

What is Flow concrete or self compaction concrete?

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete that does not require vibration and, indeed, should not be vibrated. ... The consistence of the concrete is specified and measured as a flow rate rather than the normal slump test. SCC offers: Health and safety benefits (as no vibration is required).

Can self compacting concrete be vibrated?

Self-compacting concretes are concretes that, in principle, don't require vibrating during casting. Such concretes possess enough compactness and flowability through gravity that during pouring they fill all the space in the formwork.

What are the materials used for SCC?

• Cement. Ordinary Portland cement either 43 or 53 grade cement can be used.
• Aggregates. The size of the aggregates used for SCC design is limited to 20mm. ...
• Water. ...
• Mineral Admixtures. ...
• Chemical Admixtures.

How do you build a self compacting concrete?

A simple tool has been designed for self compacting concrete (SCC) mix design with 29% of coarse aggregate, replacement of cement with Metakaolin and class F flyash, combinations of both and controlled SCC mix with 0.36 water/cementitious ratio(by weight) and 388 litre/m3 of cement paste volume.

Which cement is used in road pavement?

Bituminous concrete is one of the best flexible pavement layer materials.

Who invented concrete Romans?

600 BC – Rome: Although the Ancient Romans weren't the first to create concrete, they were first to utilize this material widespread. By 200 BC, the Romans successfully implemented the use of concrete in the majority of their construction. They used a mixture of volcanic ash, lime, and seawater to form the mix.

Why is cement called Portland?

When first made and used in the early 19th century in England, it was termed portland cement because its hydration product resembled a building stone from the Isle of Portland off the British coast. The first patent for portland cement was obtained in 1824 by Joseph Aspdin, an English mason.

Who Discovered Portland cement?

Joseph Aspdin obtained a patent for "Portland cement" in 1824. His product was a fast-setting material usable only in mortars and stuccos. He joined his father's cement manufacturing firm in 1829, at the age of fourteen. In July 1841, Aspdin left the firm after a major disagreement with his father.

Who discovered ultra high strength concrete?

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) was first introduced as reactive powder concrete (RPC) in the early 1990s by employees of the French contractor Bouygues.

What are the 5 types of concrete?

• Reinforced Concrete.
• Lightweight Concrete.
• High-Strength Concrete.
• High-Performance Concrete.
