Why is it illegal to break the sound barrier?
It's against the law. Within the United States, it is illegal to break the sound barrier. ... When you pass Mach 1, the plane travels faster than the waves itself and that move across the so-called sound barrier produces a large sound, which is the sonic boom.

If you're WONDERing about how pilots handle sonic booms, they actually don't hear them. They can see the pressure waves around the plane, but people on board the airplane can't hear the sonic boom. Like the wake of a ship, the boom carpet unrolls behind the airplane.
Who fast is Mach 1?
Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which is approximately 760 miles per hour at sea level. An airplane flying less than Mach 1 is traveling at subsonic speeds, faster than Mach 1 would be supersonic speeds and Mach 2 would be twice the speed of sound.
Who broke Mach 2?
RANGER, Ga. – Scott Crossfield, the hotshot test pilot and aircraft designer who in 1953 became the first man to fly at twice the speed of sound, was killed in the crash of his small plane, authorities said Thursday. He was 84.
Who broke Mach 3?
USAF Captain Milburn G. Apt became the first man to exceed Mach 3 while flying the Bell X-2 on September 27, 1956. Unfortunately the aircraft went out of control after making history and he was killed.
Why was Chuck Yeager not an astronaut?
Chuck Yeager was a legendary U.S. Air Force test pilot and the first person to break the sound barrier. He never earned a college degree, although he did finish one year at the Air War College. This made him ineligible for the Mercury program.
Did Chuck Yeager go to the moon?
However, he was ultimately not selected by NASA to join an astronaut training class, so he never flew in space. ... American fighter ace and test pilot Chuck Yeager, who famously was the first person to break the sound barrier, was not even considered for astronaut candidacy, as he was not a college graduate.
Has a car broken the sound barrier?
Thrust SSC holds the world land speed record, set on 15 October 1997, and driven by Andy Green, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier.
How many kills did Chuck Yeager have?
An incredible life well lived, America's greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever. Yeager, who was born in Myra (Lincoln County), West Virginia, was a World War II flying ace with at least 11 confirmed kills. He also later flew in the Vietnam War.
Who broke the speed of sound on land?
On December 17, 1979, Hollywood stuntman Stan Barrett blasts across a dry lakebed at California's Edwards Air Force Base in a rocket- and missile-powered car, becoming the first man to travel faster than the speed of sound on land.
Can a 747 break the sound barrier?
As it shot across the Atlantic, the Boeing 747-400 jet reached a top ground speed of 825 mph. However, the jet did not actually break the sound barrier, because that is measured by its airspeed, or the speed of the plane relative to the air through which it is traveling.
How fast do the Blue Angels fly?
Blue Angels Air Show facts
The fastest speed flown during an air show is about 700 mph (just under Mach 1; Sneak Pass) and the slowest is about 120 mph (Section High Alpha).
Who was the first pilot to break Mach 3?
Edwards Air Force Base, California, U.S. Milburn Grant "Mel" Apt (April 9, 1924 – September 27, 1956) was a U.S. Air Force test pilot, and the first man to attain speeds faster than Mach 3. He was killed after separating from the Bell X-2 in his escape capsule during the record-setting flight that exceeded Mach 3.
What is the highest Mach ever reached?

Is a sonic boom loud?
Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding similar to an explosion or a thunderclap to the human ear. ... Sonic booms due to large supersonic aircraft can be particularly loud and startling, tend to awaken people, and may cause minor damage to some structures.
How is the sound barrier broken?
The air in front of the plane exerts a force on the plane impeding its motion. ... There is a noticeable increase in the aerodynamic drag on the plane at this point, hence the notion of breaking through the "sound barrier." When a plane exceeds the speed of sound it is said to be supersonic.
