Situated deep to the flexor retinaculum are the four tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis flexor digitorum superficialis The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle is the largest muscle in the forearm. It forms an intermediate muscle layer between the superficial and deep muscle groups. The median nerve and the ulnar artery enter the forearm as it passes between its radial and humeral-ulnar heads. › pmc › articles › PMC5720854

Accessory muscle of the flexor digitorum superficialis and its ...

. The flexor digitorum superficialis, which is in the anterior compartment of the forearm, originates at the medial epicondyle of the humerus as well as parts of the radius and ulna.

What are the structures passing deep to flexor retinaculum of ankle?

The flexor retinaculum of the foot extends from the medial malleolus above, to the calcaneus below. This converts a series of bony grooves into canals for the passage of the tendons of the flexor muscles and the posterior tibial vessels and tibial nerve into the sole of the foot, known as the tarsal tunnel.

What passes superficial to the flexor retinaculum?

Structures passing superficial to flexor retinaculum of the hand are: Ulnar nerve. Ulnar artery and vein. Palmar cutaneous branch of ulnar nerve.

Which of the following pass beneath the flexor retinaculum of the foot?

The space beneath the flexor retinaculum is divided into four separate tunnels. Three tendons, and the posterior tibial vessels and nerve, pass through these tunnels as they pass around the ankle and into the foot.

What tendons pass under the extensor Retinaculum?

The dorsal extensor tendons pass under an extensor retinaculum and are divided into 6 compartments, as follows: Radial wrist abductor (abductor pollicis longus tendon) and thumb extensor (extensor pollicis brevis tendon) dorsal to the trapezium bone.

What is extensor Retinaculum tendon?

The extensor retinaculum (dorsal carpal ligament; posterior annular ligament) is an anatomical term for the thickened part of the antebrachial fascia that holds the tendons of the extensor muscles in place. It is located on the back of the forearm, just proximal to the hand.

Where is flexor digitorum Superficialis?

Flexor digitorum superficialis (flexor digitorum sublimis) is an extrinsic flexor muscle of the fingers at the proximal interphalangeal joints. It is in the anterior compartment of the forearm.

What passes through peroneal retinaculum?

The structures that pass deep in relation to this retinaculum include the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and peroneus tertius tendons; the anterior tibial blood vessels; and the deep peroneal nerve.

Which tendons pass behind the lateral malleolus?

Posterior Tibial Tendon

Two tendons run behind the outer bump of the ankle (the lateral malleolus). These two tendons, called the peroneals, help turn the foot down and out.

Which muscles are bound by the extensor Retinaculum?

The superior extensor retinaculum binds down the tendons of extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, peroneus tertius, and tibialis anterior as they descend on the front of the tibia and fibula; under it are found also the anterior tibial vessels and deep peroneal nerve.

What tendons pass carpal tunnel?

Normally only the flexor digitorum tendons travel in the carpal tunnel whereas the muscle belly stops before reaching it; this variant can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. The flexor digitorum superficialis is usually of humeral, ulnar and radial origin.

Is retinaculum a tendon?

A retinaculum (plural retinacula) is a band of thickened deep fascia around tendons that holds them in place. It is not part of any muscle. Its function is mostly to stabilize a tendon. The term retinaculum is New Latin, derived from the Latin verb retinere (to retain).

Which two structures pass through the tunnel of Guyon?

The ulnar nerve, together with the ulnar artery, passes through the tunnel of Guyon. This tunnel lies between two dynamic structures, the pisiform and hamate bones, and is covered by the pisohamate ligament (Fig. 26), which is a continuation of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon.

What structure pierces the flexor retinaculum?

The flexor carpi radialis tendon is shown as it pierces the flexor retinaculum at the junction of the proximal and middle portions to enter its fibroosseous canal.

What is the tibial tendon?

The posterior tibial tendon is one of the most important tendons of the leg. A tendon attaches muscles to bones, and the posterior tibial tendon attaches the calf muscle to the bones on the inside of the foot. The main function of the tendon is to hold up the arch and support the foot when walking.

Can you tear your flexor retinaculum?

Medial flexor retinaculum injuries are not uncommon, but medial flexor retinaculum periosteal avulsion injuries are rare. This patient sustained a medial flexor retinaculum tear readily characterized at computed tomography by an associated proximal retinacular avulsion fracture from the posteromedial tibia.

What tendons are in the ankle?

The major tendons include the following: Achilles tendon, which attaches the calf muscle and calcaneus. flexor hallicus longus, which runs along the inside of the ankle and attaches to the big toe. flexor digitorum, which runs along the inside of the ankle and attaches to the other toes.

What tendons run behind the medial malleolus?

Structures that pass behind medial malleolus deep to the flexor retinaculum:

• Tibialis posterior tendon.
• Flexor digitorum longus.
• Posterior tibial artery.
• Posterior tibial vein.
• Tibial nerve.
• Flexor hallucis longus.

Which muscles pass behind the medial malleolus?

Flexor digitorum longus – The flexor digitorum longus muscle is, as the name implies, a long one. It is a flexor of the digits, meaning it passes behind the medial malleolus and attaches inferiorly to the phalanges. The muscle attaches proximally on the middle-third of the medial aspect of the tibia.

Where are the peroneal tendons?

People have two peroneal tendons in each foot, running parallel to each other behind the outer ankle bone. One peroneal tendon attaches to the exterior side of the midfoot by the smallest toe, while the other runs beneath the foot and attaches close to the inside of the foot's arch.

What is flexor Retinaculum?

The flexor retinaculum is a fibrous connective tissue band that forms the anterior roof of the carpal tunnel. ... The flexor retinaculum protects nine of the forearm flexor tendons and median nerve as they pass through the carpal tunnel.

What are the 4 tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis?

radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris and palmaris longus.

What is FDS and FDP tendons?

Tendons of flexor digitorum sperficialis (FDS) and profundus (FDP) (with flexor policis longus) are located deeper respectively 1,2. Tendons of FDS and FDP are enclosed in a common synovial sheath, the ulnar bursa which is extended from wrist proximally to hand distally; and continues to synovial bursa of fifth finger.

What are the four tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis?

The flexor digitorum superficialis courses along the volar aspect of the forearm, superficial to the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus muscles, and deep to the palmaris longus, flexor carpi radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, and pronator teres.
