The reservoir, or host, of Lassa virus is a rodent known as the “multimammate rat” (Mastomys natalensis). Once infected, this rodent is able to excrete virus in urine for an extended time period, maybe for the rest of its life.

How do rats get Lassa virus?

People can contract Lassa virus from direct contact with the African soft-furred rat (Mastomys natalensis) — such as by eating them. And infected rodents can indirectly transmit the virus by salivating or urinating on rice, cassava and other crops stored in barrels or left to dry in the sun.

Can mice cause Lassa fever?

Lassa virus is typically transmitted via contact with infected rodents (Mastomys natalensis), either through consuming the animals or being exposed to their saliva or urine.

What caused the Lassa fever?

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness caused by Lassa virus, a member of the arenavirus family of viruses. Humans usually become infected with Lassa virus through exposure to food or household items contaminated with urine or faeces of infected Mastomys rats.

Where did Lassa fever originated from?

Lassa fever is an acute viral illness that occurs in west Africa. The illness was discovered in 1969 when two missionary nurses died in Nigeria. The virus is named after the town in Nigeria where the first cases occurred.

Is there a cure for Lassa fever?

Ribavirin, an antiviral drug, has been used with success in Lassa fever patients. It has been shown to be most effective when given early in the course of the illness.

Is there a cure for Lassa virus?

Although Lassa virus was first described over 5 decades ago in 1969, no treatments or vaccines have been approved to treat or prevent infection.

How is Lassa virus prevented?

Primary transmission of the Lassa virus from its host to humans can be prevented by avoiding contact with Mastomys rodents, especially in the geographic regions where outbreaks occur. Putting food away in rodent-proof containers and keeping the home clean help to discourage rodents from entering homes.

Where is Lassa virus found?

Lassa fever is an animal-borne, or zoonotic, acute viral illness. It is endemic in parts of West Africa including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria. Neighboring countries are also at risk, as the animal vector for Lassa virus, the “multimammate rat” (Mastomys natalensis) is distributed throughout the region.

Who is susceptible to Lassa fever?

People of all ages are susceptible. The disease is mild or has no observable symptoms in about 80% of people infected, but 20% have a severe multisystem disease. The incubation period is 6-21 days. The virus is excreted in urine for three to nine weeks from infection and in semen for three months.

How long does Lassa fever last?

What is Lassa fever? Lassa fever is an illness caused by Lassa virus, a single-stranded RNA hemorrhagic fever virus from the family Arenaviridae. It is an acute febrile viral illness lasting one to four weeks, and it occurs in West Africa and some areas beyond.

How long can Lassa virus survive outside the body?

SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: The virus is stable as an aerosol, particularly at low relative humidity (30 % RH). The biological half-live at both 24°C and 32°C ranges from 10.1 to 54.6 minutes(20).

How is Lassa fever diagnosis?

Lassa fever is most often diagnosed by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent serologic assays (ELISA), which detect IgM and IgG antibodies as well as Lassa antigen. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) can be used in the early stage of disease.

Can a rat bite make you sick?

Rat bites aren't always serious, but they can become infected or cause a condition called rat-bite fever.

Who brought Lassa fever to Nigeria?

Lassa fever was first discovered in 1969 in Nigeria following the death of two missionary nurses in Lassa town, Borno State [6]. The disease is endemic in West Africa countries of Sierra-Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria where about 300,000 to 400,000 cases occur annually with approximately 5,000 deaths [7].

What is Lassa fever and symptoms?

Signs and symptoms of Lassa fever typically occur 1-3 weeks after the patient comes into contact with the virus. For the majority of Lassa fever virus infections (approximately 80%), symptoms are mild and are undiagnosed. Mild symptoms include slight fever, general malaise and weakness, and headache.

What causes Ebola?

EVD is caused by the Ebola virus. It's origin or how it started is unknown. Scientists believe that it is animal-borne and most likely comes from bats, which transmit the Ebola virus to other animals and humans. There is no proof that mosquitos or other insects can transmit the virus.
