Origin. The supraspinatus muscle arises from the supraspinous fossa, a shallow depression in the body of the scapula above its spine. The supraspinatus muscle tendon passes laterally beneath the cover of the acromion.

What is the location of the supraspinatus?

The supraspinatus muscle, the most superiorly located of the rotator cuff muscles, resides in the supraspinous fossa of the scapula, superior to the scapular spine.

Where does the word supraspinatus come from?

Supraspinatus: Supraspinatus is Latin for “above the spine” because it is located above the bony ridge in the back of the shoulder blade.

What is the origin of the anterior deltoid?

The main origin of the deltoid was from the superior surface of the anterior acromion, but muscle and tendinous attachments were also seen on the entire anterior surface of the acromion, its anteroinferior surface and on the whole width of the anterior surface of the clavicle.

What is the origin insertion and action of supraspinatus?

The supraspinatus muscle originates from the supraspinous fossa, which is a concave surface at the top of the scapula. From the supraspinous fossa of the scapula, the supraspinatus muscle then extends laterally (outward) and inserts onto the humerus, which is the long bone that makes up the upper arm.

What is the meaning of supraspinatus?

: a muscle of the back of the shoulder that arises from the supraspinous fossa of the scapula, that inserts into the top of the greater tubercle of the humerus, that is one of the muscles making up the rotator cuff of the shoulder, and that rotates the humerus laterally and helps to abduct the arm.

What is the role of the supraspinatus?

As part of the Rotator Cuff, supraspinatus helps to resist the gravitational forces which act on the shoulder joint to pull from the weight of the upper limb downward. It also helps to stabilize the shoulder joint by keeping the head of the humerus firmly pressed medially against the glenoid fossa of the scapula.

What is the origin and insertion of the trapezius muscle?

It originates on the occipital bone, the ligamentum nuchae, and the spinous processes of T01–T12. The trapezius inserts on the lateral third of the clavicle, as well as the acromion and scapular spine of the scapula.

What is the origin of the Brachialis muscle?

The brachialis originates from the anterior surface of the distal half of the humerus, near the insertion of the deltoid muscle, which it embraces by two angular processes. Its origin extends below to within 2.5 cm of the margin of the articular surface of the humerus at the elbow joint.

What is the origin of the latissimus dorsi?

Origin of the latissimus dorsi is from spinous processes of thoracic T7–T12, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest and inferior 3 or 4 ribs, inferior angle of scapula and insertion on floor of intertubercular groove of the humerus.

What is the origin insertion and action of the serratus anterior?

Anatomical terms of muscle

The serratus anterior is a muscle that originates on the surface of the 1st to 8th ribs at the side of the chest and inserts along the entire anterior length of the medial border of the scapula. The serratus anterior acts to pull the scapula forward around the thorax.

What is the origin and insertion of the triceps Brachii?

The triceps brachii muscle consists of a long, medial and lateral head, that originate from their respective attachments on the humerus and scapula, and insert via a common tendon on the ulna. The main function of triceps brachii is extension of the forearm at the elbow joint.

How many origin does biceps have?

The biceps brachii has two heads, or origins, which is where the 'bi' in biceps comes from. Both heads originate on the scapula, which is the technical name for the shoulder blade.

What is an origin and insertion of a muscle?

A skeletal muscle attaches to bone (or sometimes other muscles or tissues) at two or more places. If the place is a bone that remains immobile for an action, the attachment is called an origin. If the place is on the bone that moves during the action, the attachment is called an insertion.

What is the origin of the deltoid muscle quizlet?

Terms in this set (4)

The origin of the deltoid is identical to insertion of the trapezius and curves around the spine of the scapula and clavicle forming a "V" shape.

What is the origin of the upper trapezius?

The superior or upper (or descending) fibers of the trapezius originate from the spinous process of C7, the external occipital protuberance, the medial third of the superior nuchal line of the occipital bone (both in the back of the head), and the ligamentum nuchae.

Where is the origin of the sternocleidomastoid?

Sternocleidomastoid Attachments

It originates on the anterior surface of the manubrium, and the superior border and anterior surface of the medial third of the clavicle. The SCM converges into one point and inserts on the lateral surface of the mastoid process and the nuchal line of the occipital bone.
