Comparative planetology is the comparing and contrasting of the properties of the diverse worlds we encounter. Its goal is to develop a comprehensive theory of the origin and evolution of our planetary system.

What is Comparative Planetology quizlet?

Comparative planetology is the systematic study of the similarities and differences among the planets, with the goal of obtaining deeper insight into how the solar system formed and has evolved in time.

What is the value of Comparative Planetology quizlet?

What is the value of comparative planetology? It helps us learn about a planet by studying processes that affect all planets. It helps us understand planets around other stars that cannot be studied individually in great detail.

What is the process of accretion?

In planetary science, accretion is the process in which solids agglomerate to form larger and larger objects and eventually planets are produced. The initial conditions are a disc of gas and microscopic solid particles, with a total mass of about 1% of the gas mass. Accretion has to be effective and fast.

What is the role of irregularities in the solar system?

What is the role of irregularities in the solar system in terms of theories of its origin? ... They introduce a need for flexibility in theories of the solar system's origin. C) Theories of the solar system are entirely based on the many irregularities found among the planets and moons.

What is the role of irregularities in the solar system in terms of theories of its origin?

What is the role of irregularities in the solar system in terms of theories of its origin? They introduce a need for flexibility in theories of the solar system's origin. What might have made the original solar nebula begin to contract? are almost circular, with low eccentricities.

What was the primary role of dust in the formation of the solar system?

What was the primary role of dust in the formation of the solar system? Dust acted as condensation nuclei; platforms to which other particles could attach and form larger particles of matter. spins faster due to conservation of angular momentum. faster due to conservation of angular momentum.

What is theory of accretion?

Accretion is the gradual increase in size by the buildup of matter due to gravity. ... It's explained by nebular theory, which describes the forces and processes at play as a nebula spins and accretes into a star and its planets orbiting it.

What is Bond accretion?

In finance, accretion is also the accumulation of additional income an investor expects to receive after purchasing a bond at a discount and holding until maturity. The accretion rate is determined by dividing a bond's discount by the number of years in its term to maturity.

Who proposed the accretion theory?

The accretion model that Earth and the other terrestrial planets formed from meteoric material was proposed in 1944 by Otto Schmidt, followed by the protoplanet theory of William McCrea (1960) and finally the capture theory of Michael Woolfson.

Why does Mars appear red?

Well, a lot of rocks on Mars are full of iron, and when they're exposed to the great outdoors, they 'oxidize' and turn reddish - the same way an old bike left out in the yard gets all rusty. When rusty dust from those rocks gets kicked up in the atmosphere, it makes the martian sky look pink.

Which planet has rings quizlet?

Saturn is the only planet in the solar system with rings.

Which planet has a volcanically active moon?

Jupiter's rocky moon Io is the most volcanically active world in the solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes, some erupting lava fountains dozens of miles (or kilometers) high.

How do astronomers use comparative planetology?

According to this technique, called comparative planetology, we can learn more by looking for the unifying principles different planets share, rather than by studying each planet as an unrelated system. Montage of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, in a composite image comparing their sizes and the size of Jupiter.

What is comparative astronomy?

Comparative planetary science or comparative planetology is a branch of space science and planetary science in which different natural processes and systems are studied by their effects and phenomena on and between multiple bodies.

Who is called terrestrial planet?

The planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are called terrestrial because they have a compact, rocky surface like Earth's terra firma. The terrestrial planets are the four innermost planets in the solar system.

What is bond amortization and accretion?

What are amortization and accretion? ... Amortization or accretion calculations are used to adjust the cost basis from the purchase amount to the expected redemption amount. This spreads out the gain or loss over the remaining life of the bond instead of recognizing the gain or loss in the year of the bond's redemption.

What is M&A accretion?

An accretion/dilution analysis is a simple test used to evaluate the merit of a proposed merger or acquisition deal. The accretion/dilution analysis determines if the post-transaction earnings per share (EPS) is increased or decreased.

What is interest accretion?

Accreted Interest means interest accrued on a Loan Asset that is added to the principal amount of such Loan Asset instead of being paid as interest as it accrues.

When was the end of planetary accretion?

After between three and ten million years, the young Sun's solar wind would have cleared away all the gas and dust in the protoplanetary disc, blowing it into interstellar space, thus ending the growth of the planets.

What is the name of our sun?

We English speakers always just call it the sun. You sometimes hear English-speakers use the name Sol for our sun. If you ask in a public forum like this one, you'll find many who swear the sun's proper name is Sol. But, in English, in modern times, Sol is more a poetic name than an official one.

What is cold accretion theory?

Cold accretion theory is a term that can be used to distinguish modern theories of planet growth from earlier theories. ... Urey argued that preplanetary dust grains accreted by collision (see Collision) into small, asteroid-sized bodies, or 'planetesimals,' which later accreted into planets.

What was the major influence in the formation of the solar system?

Our solar system formed about 4.5 billion years ago from a dense cloud of interstellar gas and dust. The cloud collapsed, possibly due to the shockwave of a nearby exploding star, called a supernova. When this dust cloud collapsed, it formed a solar nebula—a spinning, swirling disk of material.

Which of the following best describes the formation of the solar system?

Which of the following best describes the formation of the solar system? The Sun ejected rocky material, which later went on to form the planets. A rotating disk of gas and dust was drawn together by the force of gravity.
