In organic chemistry, a deactivating group is a functional group attached to a benzene molecule that removes electron density from the benzene ring, making electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions slower and more complex relative to benzene.

Which is the most deactivating group?

Hint: The deactivating group is known as the electron-withdrawing group, so the group which can attract electrons towards itself is known as a deactivating group. The group that has the most electronegative atoms will be the most deactivating group.

Is COOH a deactivating group?

Common deactivating groups (not a complete list): NO2, CF3, CN, halogens, COOH, SO3H.

What are deactivating and activating groups?

Activating and Deactivating Groups

Activating groups are substituents that increase the rate of a reaction (by lowering the activation energy). Deactivating groups are substituents that decrease the rate of a reaction (by increasing the activation energy).

Is a deactivating group?

If electrophilic aromatic substitution of a monosubstituted benzene is slower than that of benzene under identical conditions, the substituent in the monosubstituted benzene is called a deactivating group. All deactivating groups are electron-withdrawing groups. ...

Ortho Meta Para Directors - Activating and Deactivating Groups

Why CHO group is meta directing?

Answer and Explanation: The aldehyde group (-CHO) in benzaldehyde is a meta-director as it is an electron-withdrawing in nature.

Which of the following is example of deactivating group?

Examples are NO₂, carbonyl groups (C=O), sulfonyl, cyano (CN) among others. These groups are universally deactivating, slowing the rate of electrophilic aromatic substitution.

What is activate group?

If electrophilic aromatic substitution of a monosubstituted benzene is faster than that of benzene under identical conditions, the substituent in the monosubstituted benzene is called an activating group. Thus, the methyl group is an activating group. ... All activating groups are electron-donating groups.

Why is NO2 a deactivating group?

Electron withdrawing groups (EWG) with π bonds to electronegative atoms (e.g. - C=O, -NO2) adjacent to the π system deactivate the aromatic ring by decreasing the electron density on the ring through a resonance withdrawing effect. The resonance only decreases the electron density at the ortho- and para- positions.

Is CF3 deactivating?

Therefore, CF3 is strongly deactivating and prefers to direct an incoming substituent (in this case it was a chlorine from Cl2 ) to the meta position, just like a nitro group would.

Is Cho meta directing?

Therefore, –NO₂ group is a meta director. -NO₂, -CHO, -COOH, COOR, –SO₃H, -CN, -COR etc. Substituents already present on a benzene ring also influences the rate of reaction. ... A substituent, which activates the aromatic ring to further substitution, is called an activating substituent or ring-activator.

Which is not activating group?

For example, groups like $ - N{H_2}, - N{R_2}$ when attached to an aromatic ring delocalize their lone pair over the ring. Such an effect is $ + R$ or positive resonance effect. -Resonance effect is stronger than inductive effect. Hence $ - C{H_3}$ is the weakest activating group among all.

What catalyst is used for halogenation reactions?

The catalyst is either aluminum chloride (or aluminum bromide if you are reacting benzene with bromine) or iron.

Is ester activating or deactivating?

It clearly shows that ester (CO2R) is a DEACTIVATING group. However, these are all ACTIVATING because the oxygen is partially negatively charged due to the polarity difference. This negative charge will donate electron density to the ring, and therefore they are activating.

What is activator and deactivator?

What are activators and deactivators? In short, the groups that donate electron density to the ring and make it electron-rich are activators. The ones that withdraw the electron density are deactivators.

Is NHCOCH3 activating or deactivating?

Group -NHCOCH3 is an moderately activating group and ortho para directing. ... The presence of the unpaired electrons that can be donated to the ring, stabilize the carbocation in the transition state.

Which of these is o p directing and deactivating group?

Halogens are electron withdrawing groups due to electronegative nature hence they deactivate benzene ring for electrophilic substitution but are o,p-directing.

Is activating or deactivating group?

If a group increases the stability thereby increases overall reactivity of the electrophilic substitution reaction, then it can be termed as activating group. Similarly if a group reduces the stability of intermediate thereby reduces the reactivity, then it can be termed as deactivating group.

Which of the following group is O p directing and deactivating?

But due to their highly electronegative nature they deactivate the benzene ring. So the correct answer here is the -X (halogens) group, option C.

How is carbonyl group meta directing?

Carbonyl group act meta directing in aromatic compounds due to ortho para directing group are electron donating group and meta directing are electron withdrawing group as carbonyl comp.

Is ch3 ortho or meta directing?

1: Thus, the methyl group is an ortho, para directing group.

What is ortho para and meta?

The terms ortho, meta, and para are prefixes used in organic chemistry to indicate the position of non-hydrogen substituents on a hydrocarbon ring (benzene derivative). The prefixes derive from Greek words meaning correct/straight, following/after, and similar, respectively.
