Vasa Recta Function The vasa recta, the capillary networks that supply blood to the medulla, are highly permeable to solute and water. As with the loop of Henle loop of Henle Fluid entering the loop of Henle is isotonic (osmolarity 300 mOsm/L) but the volume is only a third of the volume originally filtered into Bowman's capsule. The loop of Henle acts as a countercurrent multiplier (see Figure 35-5) and as such creates a medullary interstitial osmolar gradient. › topics › loop-of-henle

Loop of Henle - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

, the vasa recta form a parallel set of hairpin loops within the medulla (see Chapter 2).

Where are vasa recta located?

In the blood supply of the kidney, the vasa recta renis (or straight arteries of kidney, or straight arterioles of kidney) form a series of straight capillaries in the medulla. They lie parallel to the loop of Henle.

What role do the vasa recta play in urine formation?

What role do the vasa recta play in urine formation? A. The vasa recta create the medullary osmotic gradient. ... The vasa recta protect the medullary osmotic gradient by preventing rapid removal of salt.

What is the function of the vasa recta peritubular capillaries?

Vasa recta are the tiny capillaries that surround Henle loops and provide nutrients and oxygen to renal medulla while peritubular capillaries are the capillaries that surround the proximal and distal tubules and provide nutrients and oxygen to the renal cortex.

What is the function of the vasa recta quizlet?

What is the function of the vasa recta? It maintains the concentration gradient established by the loop of Henle.

What is a vasa recta definition?

Medical Definition of vasa recta

1 : numerous small vessels that arise from the terminal branches of arteries supplying the intestine, encircle the intestine, and divide into more branches between its layers.

What does the vasa recta contain?

The vasa recta of the kidney, (vasa rectae renis) are the straight arterioles, and the straight venules of the kidney, – a series of blood vessels in the blood supply of the kidney that enter the medulla as the straight arterioles, and leave the medulla to ascend to the cortex as the straight venules.

What is the function of the macula densa cells of the Juxtaglomerular Complex JGC quizlet?

What is the function of the macula densa cells of the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC)? The macula densa cells monitor the NaCl content of the filtrate entering the distal convoluted tubule.

How does the vasa recta preserve the vertical gradient?

-The vasa recta MAINTAINS the medullary vertical osmotic gradient. -Movement of solutes and water is PASSIVE in both the descending and ascending limbs of the vasa recta. ... -As the vasa recta descends into the more concentrated medulla, solutes diffuse passively into and water diffuses passively out of the blood.

Where are the vasa recta found quizlet?

Peritubular capillaries surround the proximal and distal tubules, as well as the loop of Henle, where they are known as vasa recta.

Is vasa recta present in cortical nephron?

Vasa recta is highly reduced in cortical nephrons. The loop of Henle is a U-shaped structure that first extends from the renal cortex into the renal medulla, takes a U-turn, and then again enters into the renal cortex. ... The ascending limb of the nephron loop ends at the DCT.

What is vasa recta and excretory system?

human excretory system

In renal system: Arteries and arterioles. Known as vasa recta, these vessels run toward the apexes of the pyramids in close contact with the loops of Henle. Like the tubules they make hairpin bends, retrace their path, and empty into arcuate veins that parallel the arcuate arteries.

Why is vasa recta absent in cortical nephron?

Detailed Solution

Vasa Recta is absent in Cortical Nephrons. The vasa recta are the capillary networks that supply blood to the medulla which are highly permeable to solute and water. Transport by the Vasa Recta Is Essential to the Operation of the Loop of Henle.

Where are glomerular capillaries?

The glomerulus (plural glomeruli) is a network of small blood vessels (capillaries) known as a tuft, located at the beginning of a nephron in the kidney.

What is the function of the macula densa of the Juxtaglomerular complex?

It is located near the vascular pole of the glomerulus and its main function is to regulate blood pressure and the filtration rate of the glomerulus. The macula densa is a collection of specialized epithelial cells in the distal convoluted tubule that detect sodium concentration of the fluid in the tubule.

What is the function of the macula densa cells of the Juxtaglomerular?

Macula densa cells in the distal nephron, according to the classic paradigm, are salt sensors that generate paracrine chemical signals in the juxtaglomerular apparatus to control vital kidney functions, including renal blood flow, glomerular filtration, and renin release.

What are the functions of the macula densa?

Macula densa (MD) cells are chief cells within the kidney, playing key sensory and regulatory functions in the maintenance of body fluid, electrolyte homeostasis, and blood pressure.

Where does blood go after the vasa recta?

The peritubular capillaries and vasa recta then lead to venules and the venous drainage of the kidney.

Where does the countercurrent mechanism occur?

The counter current mechanism takes place in Juxtamedullary nephron. The function of the countercurrent multiplier is to produce the hyperosmotic Medullary Interstitium. The ADH promotes water reabsorption through the walls of the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.

What is the meaning of Vasa in English?

/vasā/ mn. fat variable noun. Fat is a substance used in cooking which is obtained from vegetables or the flesh of animals.

Where is the ureter located in the kidney?

The ureter is a tube that carries urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder. There are two ureters, one attached to each kidney. The upper half of the ureter is located in the abdomen and the lower half is located in the pelvic area.

What is the function of the cortical nephron?

Cortical nephrons (85% of all nephrons) mainly perform excretory and regulatory functions, while juxtamedullary nephrons (15% of nephrons) concentrate and dilute urine.

What is the shape of vasa recta?

Forms U-shaped structure.

What is the difference between a cortical and Juxtamedullary nephron?

Cortical nephrons have a glomerulus located nearer to the outer parts of the cortex and their loops of Henle are short. Juxtamedullary nephrons have a glomerulus near the junction of the cortex and medulla and their loops of Henle penetrate deep into the medulla.

How does the vasa recta work?

The vasa recta capillaries are long, hairpin-shaped blood vessels that run parallel to the loops of Henle. The hairpin turns slow the rate of blood flow, which helps maintain the osmotic gradient required for water reabsorption.
