Anatomically, the tectum is that portion of the mesencephalon, or midbrain, sitting between the hindbrain and the forebrain. The name is the Latin word for roof and reflects the view of early anatomists that the tectum formed a roof over the fluid-filled cerebral aqueduct and the tegmentum.

What makes up the tectum in the brain?

The tectum (from Latin for “roof”) makes up the rear portion of the midbrain and is formed by two paired rounded swellings, the superior and inferior colliculi.

Is the tectum in the pons?

Midbrain and pons nuclei and tracts. ... The tectum is the region of the midbrain that is posterior to the cerebral aqueduct of Sylvius. It contains the nuclei of the superior and inferior colliculi. Between the cerebral aqueduct and the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, is the tegmentum.

What is tectum and tegmentum?

The tegmentum is the ventral part of the midbrain and the tectum is the dorsal part of the midbrain. ... It forms the floor of the midbrain (mesencephalon) whereas the tectum forms the ceiling. It is a multisynaptic network of neurons that is involved in many subconscious homeostatic and reflexive pathways.

What is the major function of the tectum?

tectum: The dorsal part of the midbrain, responsible for auditory and visual reflexes.

2-Minute Neuroscience: Midbrain

What are the structures that are part of the tectum?

The tectum occupies the dorsal part of the mesencephalon and is divided into two main structures: the superior colliculus, which is located more rostrally and is involved in control of eye movement, and the more the caudally located inferior colliculus, which is associated with the auditory pathway.

What is the optic tectum?

Abstract. In nonmammalian vertebrates the optic tectum is the largest and most conspicuous visual center: its twin lobes are literally the roof of the midbrain, as implied by its Latin root.

Is the tegmentum part of the brainstem?

The tegmentum is one of the areas of the brainstem. It is a phylogenetically old part of the brainstem and, in adults, is the location of the brainstem nuclei. In the midbrain, it sits between the quadrigeminal plate and cerebral peduncles.

What is the meaning of tegmentum?

: an anatomical covering : tegmen especially : the part of the ventral midbrain above the substantia nigra formed of longitudinal white fibers with arched transverse fibers and gray matter.

What is the tectum of the midbrain?

Anatomically, the tectum is that portion of the mesencephalon, or midbrain, sitting between the hindbrain and the forebrain. The name is the Latin word for roof and reflects the view of early anatomists that the tectum formed a roof over the fluid-filled cerebral aqueduct and the tegmentum.

What is tectum in pollen grain?

Tectum is a term used to describe a structure resembling a roof. ... Tectum is also used to refer to the roof-like protrusions on the outer surface of a pollen or a spore. When a pollen grain has tecta on its outermost layer, it is described as tectate. When there are no tecta, the pollen is described as intectate.

What is the function of the Tegmentum?

Tegmentum. Reticular formation: This highly diverse and integrative area contains a network of nuclei responsible for many vital functions including arousal, consciousness, sleep-wake cycles, coordination of certain movements, and cardiovascular control.

What is the forebrain?

By far the largest region of your brain is the forebrain (derived from the developmental prosencephalon), which contains the entire cerebrum and several structures directly nestled within it - the thalamus, hypothalamus, the pineal gland and the limbic system.

Where is the medulla located?

Your medulla oblongata is located at the base of your brain, where the brain stem connects the brain to your spinal cord. It plays an essential role in passing messages between your spinal cord and brain. It's also essential for regulating your cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

What is the center of your brain called?

The brainstem (middle of brain) connects the cerebrum with the spinal cord. The brainstem includes the midbrain, the pons and the medulla.

What part of the brain is for thinking?

The Biggest Part: the Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the thinking part of the brain and it controls your voluntary muscles — the ones that move when you want them to.

How many reticular formations are there in the brain?

Function. The reticular formation consists of more than 100 small neural networks, with varied functions including the following: Somatic motor control – Some motor neurons send their axons to the reticular formation nuclei, giving rise to the reticulospinal tracts of the spinal cord.

Is the hypothalamus part of the tegmentum?

The ventral tegmental area is in contact with parts of the forebrain – the mammillary bodies (from the Diencephalon) and hypothalamus (of the diencephalon).

What happens if the tegmentum is damaged?

The brainstem tegmentum, including the reticular formation, contains distinct nuclei, each of which has a set of chemical, physiological and anatomical features. Damage to the brainstem tegmentum is known to cause coma, the most radical disturbance of consciousness.

Is medulla a tegmentum?

The tegmentum of the medulla contains the medullary reticular formation, together with cranial nerve nuclei and ascending tracts. It also includes a number of 'vital centres' which subserve cardiorespiratory functions and airway-protective reflexes (e.g. cough, sneeze, gag).

What is posterior to tegmentum of midbrain?

The posterior surface of the midbrain is called the tectum, or roof, of the midbrain. The tectum features four tubercles on its surface which lie inferior to the pineal gland. The upper pair of tubercles are the left and right superior colliculi, while the lower pair are the left and right inferior colliculi.

What is the ventral tegmentum?

The ventral tegmental area, or VTA, is in the midbrain, situated adjacent to the substantia nigra. Although it contains several different types of neurons, it is primarily characterized by its dopaminergic neurons, which project from the VTA throughout the brain.

Is the superior colliculus part of the tectum?

The superior colliculus refers to the rostral (front) bump on the lateral (side) part of the midbrain. It is, in fact, a pair of two colliculi, superior and inferior, on either side of the midbrain that together constitute the tectum.

Which part of the brain is important for head and eye orientation towards both visual stimuli?

Anatomical terms of neuroanatomy

The visual cortex of the brain is the area of the cerebral cortex that processes visual information. It is located in the occipital lobe.

Where is inferior colliculus located?

The inferior colliculus is a part of the midbrain that serves as a main auditory (sound) center for the body. It acts as the channel for almost all auditory signals in the human body.
