The anterior perforated substance, or substantia perforata anterior, is an area in the basal forebrain that plays an important role with regards to the blood supply of deep grey matter structures of the brain.

Where is anterior perforated?

Located within the basal forebrain, the anterior perforated substance is a quadrilateral area of grey matter positioned posterior to the gyrus rectus and olfactory trigone and anterolateral to the optic tract. It is bounded medially by the optic chiasm and laterally by the lateral olfactory striae.

Is the anterior perforated substance cholinergic?

It consists of fibers that are said to arise in the parolfactory area, the gyrus subcallosus and the anterior perforated substance, and course backward in the longitudinal striae to the dentate gyrus and the hippocampal region. This is a cholinergic bundle of nerve fibers posterior to the anterior perforated substance.

What goes through posterior perforated?

In most cases, the posterior thalamoperforating arteries pass into the brain through the posterior perforated substance, the medial part of the brain peduncles, and the upper part of the interpeduncular fossa. The circumflex branches can originate from the P1 and P2 segments.

What is the anterior perforated substance?

The anterior perforated substance, or substantia perforata anterior, is an area in the basal forebrain that plays an important role with regards to the blood supply of deep grey matter structures of the brain.

Which part of the brain stem is the posterior perforated substance?

The posterior perforated substance is a triangular area of grey matter located within the interpeduncular fossa. The apex of the triangle corresponds to the pons, the sides being the cerebral crura and the base forming the ventral, medial aspect of the tegmentum.

What does the anterior olfactory nucleus do?

The anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) is the initial recipient of odour information from the olfactory bulb, and the target of dense innervation conveying spatiotemporal cues from the hippocampus.

What is substantia Innominata?

The substantia innominata (plural: substantiae innominatae), or substantia innominata of Meynert, is an area of mixed grey and white matter located within the anterior perforated substance in the basal forebrain. It contains the acetylcholine-rich basal nucleus of Meynert.

What is the function of posterior perforated substance?

The posterior perforated substance is the depressed area between the crura is termed the interpeduncular fossa, and consists of a layer of gray matter which is pierced by small apertures for the transmission of blood vessels; its lower part lies on the ventral aspect of the medial portions of the tegmenta, and contains ...

What is the olfactory trigone?

Medical Definition of olfactory trigone

: a triangular area of gray matter on each side of the brain forming the junction of an olfactory tract with a cerebral hemisphere near the optic chiasma.

Where is the Interpeduncular fossa?

Interpeduncular fossa is a somewhat lozenge-shaped area of the base of the brain, limited in front by the optic chiasma, behind by the antero-superior surface of the pons, antero-laterally by the converging optic tracts, and postero-laterally by the diverging cerebral peduncles.

Where is the posterior cerebral artery?

The posterior cerebral arteries (bottom forks) arise from the basilar artery (center). The posterior cerebral artery (PCA) is one of a pair of cerebral arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the occipital lobe, part of the back of the human brain.

What is in the circle of Willis?

The Circle of Willis is the joining area of several arteries at the bottom (inferior) side of the brain. At the Circle of Willis, the internal carotid arteries branch into smaller arteries that supply oxygenated blood to over 80% of the cerebrum.

What is the midbrain?

The midbrain is the topmost part of the brainstem, the connection central between the brain and the spinal cord. There are three main parts of the midbrain - the colliculi, the tegmentum, and the cerebral peduncles.

Is substantia Innominata part of basal ganglia?

Comparative neuroanatomical investigations in primates and non-primates have helped disentangle the anatomy of the basal forebrain region known as the substantia innominata. ... In most mammals, the extended amygdala presents itself as a ring of neurons encircling the internal capsule and basal ganglia.

What does Innominata mean?

adj. having no name; nameless; anonymous. [1630–40; < Late Latin innōminātus unnamed.

Where are the basal ganglia?

The term basal ganglia in the strictest sense refers to nuclei embedded deep in the brain hemispheres (striatum or caudate-putamen and globus pallidus), whereas related nuclei consist of structures located in the diencephalon (subthalamic nucleus), mesencephalon (substantia nigra), and pons (pedunculopontine nucleus).

Where is the anterior olfactory nucleus?

The anterior olfactory nucleus is located posterior to the olfactory bulb in the olfactory peduncle. It is one of the major olfactory processing centers; the olfactory bulb is its major afferent input and is also the principal target of its axons.

What is the olfactory nucleus?

The anterior olfactory nucleus (AON; also called the anterior olfactory cortex) is a portion of the forebrain of vertebrates. It is involved in olfaction and has supposedly strong influence on other olfactory areas like the olfactory bulb and the piriform cortex.

What is the Tegmentum?

: an anatomical covering : tegmen especially : the part of the ventral midbrain above the substantia nigra formed of longitudinal white fibers with arched transverse fibers and gray matter.

Does everyone have a circle of Willis?

A study in PLOS ONE notes that about 70% of people may have an incomplete circle of Willis. An incomplete circle of Willis can take a few different forms. A smaller study in the Journal of Morphological Sciences found that at least one variation was present in the circle of Willis in 54% of cases.

Where are berry aneurysms?

Berry aneurysms tend to appear at the base of the brain where the major blood vessels meet, also known as the Circle of Willis. Over time, pressure from the aneurysm on the already weak artery wall can cause the aneurysm to rupture. When a berry aneurysm ruptures, blood from the artery moves into the brain.

Why is circle of Willis important?

The circle of Willis is of great clinical significance due to its structure, function, and location. As the connection between the anterior and posterior cerebral circulations, the CoW perfuses the brain and protects against ischemia (at least in those with a complete or mostly-complete ring of vessels).

Where does the anterior cerebral artery supply?

To summarize, the ACA supplies the medial and superior parts of the frontal lobe, and the anterior parietal lobe. The short anterior communicating artery joins the two anterior cerebral arteries. It may allow collateral flow into the opposite hemisphere if the carotid artery is occluded on either side.
