Where is stylomastoid foramen?
Emily Phillips The stylomastoid foramen is a rounded opening at the inferior end of the facial canal. It is located on the inferior surface of the petrous temporal bone, between the base of the Styloid process | Radiology Reference Article | Radiopaedia.org
What bone is the stylomastoid foramen in?
CN VII exits the temporal bone via the stylomastoid foramen, which is between the mastoid and styloid processes and deep to the posterior belly of the digastric.
Where is the location of stylomastoid foramen in the skull and what passes through it?
Anatomical terms of bone
The stylomastoid foramen is a foramen between the styloid and mastoid processes of the temporal bone of the skull. It is the termination of the facial canal, and transmits the facial nerve, and stylomastoid artery.
Which nerve exits through stylomastoid foramen?
The second branch of the facial nerve running in the facial canal is the nerve to stapedius muscle, which provides motor (SVE) innervation to the stapedius muscle of the inner ear. The extratemporal part of the facial nerve begins when the facial nerve leaves the cranium through the stylomastoid foramen.
What is the importance of the stylomastoid foramen?
Stylomastoid foramen is an important site for Nadbath facial nerve block. Exact localization of foramen holds the key to success, thus decreasing the complications. Wide racial variation exists in position of stylomastoid foramen in different population groups.

1 : of, relating to, or being a foramen that occurs on the lower surface of the temporal bone between the styloid and mastoid processes and forms the termination of the facial canal.
What does the stylomastoid artery supply?
The stylomastoid artery primarily supplies the posterolateral compartment, with possible contributions from posterior auricular and occipital arteries. The anterior tympanic artery supplies the anterior compartment, whereas the middle meningeal and accessory meningeal arteries supply the superior compartment.
What travels in the stylomastoid foramen?
The stylomastoid foramen is between the styloid and mastoid processes of the temporal bone. It is the termination of the facial canal, and transmits the facial nerve and stylomastoid artery.
Is the stylomastoid foramen the internal acoustic meatus?
The facial nerve enters the internal auditory meatus, passes through the petrous part of the temporal bone, and exits the skull through the stylomastoid foramen. The nerve then enters the parotid gland and breaks up into its five terminal branches: temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular, and cervical.
Which muscle is supplied by the facial nerve before it exits the stylomastoid foramen?
Before the facial nerve exits the cranium via the stylomastoid foramen, it gives off the chorda tympani. The chorda tympani travels superiolaterally and enters the middle ear, arches across pars flaccida medial to the superior portion of the handle of malleus, and traverses above the insertion of tensor tympani.
What passes through jugular foramen?
The glossopharyngeal, vagus, and accessory nerves pass through the jugular foramen on the medial side of the jugular bulb. The malleus, incus, and stapes are exposed in the tympanic cavity. The stylomastoid branch of the occipital artery joins the facial nerve at the stylomastoid foramen.
Where is the carotid foramen?
The carotid canal is a passage within the petrous temporal bone and transmits the internal carotid artery and sympathetic plexus. Its inferior opening is called the carotid foramen and is situated anteriorly to the jugular fossa and medially to the carotid plate.
What is the weakest part of the skull?
Clinical significance
The pterion is known as the weakest part of the skull. The anterior division of the middle meningeal artery runs underneath the pterion. Consequently, a traumatic blow to the pterion may rupture the middle meningeal artery causing an epidural haematoma.
What passes through Petrotympanic fissure?
Contents. The contents of the fissure include communications of cranial nerve VII to the infratemporal fossa. A branch of cranial nerve VII, the chorda tympani, runs through the fissure to join with the lingual nerve providing special sensory (taste) innervation to the tongue.
Where is the petrous portion of the temporal bone located?
The petrous part of the temporal bone is pyramid-shaped and is wedged in at the base of the skull between the sphenoid and occipital bones. Directed medially, forward, and a little upward, it presents a base, an apex, three surfaces, and three angles, and houses in its interior, the components of the inner ear.
What is the hypoglossal canal?
The hypoglossal canal is located between the occipital condyle and jugular tubercle and runs obliquely forwards (posteromedial to anterolateral) allowing the hypoglossal nerve to exit the posterior cranial fossa.
Where is the internal acoustic meatus located?
The internal auditory canal (IAC), also referred to as the internal acoustic meatus lies in the temporal bone and exists between the inner ear and posterior cranial fossa. It includes the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII), facial nerve (CN VII), the labyrinthine artery, and the vestibular ganglion.
Which skull bone is the hypoglossal canal found?
This is the motor nerve for the oral tongue. It emerges from the skull through the hypoglossal canal in the occipital bone.
Where is the external acoustic meatus located?
external auditory canal, also called external auditory meatus, or external acoustic meatus, passageway that leads from the outside of the head to the tympanic membrane, or eardrum membrane, of each ear.
Where does the facial nerve exit the skull?
Along this route, the facial nerve travels in close proximity to the eighth cranial nerve, the vestibulocochlear nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. The facial nerve exits the base of the skull at the stylomastoid foramen, which is an opening in the bone located near the base of the ear.
What is the hypoglossal?
The hypoglossal nerve enables tongue movement. It controls the hyoglossus, intrinsic, genioglossus and styloglossus muscles. These muscles help you speak, swallow and move substances around in your mouth.
What passes through the hypoglossal canal?
Function. The hypoglossal canal transmits the hypoglossal nerve from its point of entry near the medulla oblongata to its exit from the base of the skull near the jugular foramen.
Where is the Auricularis superior muscle located?
The auricularis superior is one of three extrinsic muscles of the ear. It is a thin, fan-shaped muscle that arises from the temporal fascia (connective tissue along the side of the head) and descends into the root of the auricle, or ear.
What is the ophthalmic artery?
Ophthalmic artery (OA) is the first intracranial branch of internal carotid artery (ICA). It arises soon after ICA emerges from cavernous sinus, follows a short intracranial course, transverses the optic canal, and enters the orbit.
