Runoff is the process where water runs over the surface of earth. When the snow melts into water it also leads to runoff. As water runs over the ground it displaces the top soil with it and moves the minerals along with the stream. This runoff combines to form channels, rivers and ends up into lakes, seas and oceans.

Where does runoff occur in the water cycle?

Runoff is the part of the water cycle in which the water flows over the land as surface water rather than be absorbed into groundwater or evaporating. Runoff appears in uncontrolled surface streams, rivers, drains and sewers.

Where is runoff located?

Runoff occurs when there is more water than land can absorb. The excess liquid flows across the surface of the land and into nearby creeks, streams, or ponds.

What is runoff in the water cycle process?

Runoff is nothing more than water "running off" the land surface. Just as the water you wash your car with runs off down the driveway as you work, the rain that Mother Nature covers the landscape with runs off downhill, too (due to gravity). Runoff is an important component of the natural water cycle.

What happens during the runoff stage?

A portion of the precipitation seeps into the ground to replenish Earth's groundwater. Most of it flows downhill as runoff. Runoff is extremely important in that not only does it keep rivers and lakes full of water, but it also changes the landscape by the action of erosion.

The Water Cycle: Infiltration vs Runoff

Where do groundwater and runoff usually end up?

Runoff, and groundwater seepage, accumulate and are stored as freshwater in lakes. Not all runoff flows into rivers, though. Much of it soaks into the ground as infiltration.

What are examples of runoff?

Runoff is defined as excess water draining away from land or buildings. The overflow of water that drains off of your driveway is an example of runoff. Dissolved chemicals, etc, included in such water. The runoff of nitrates is poisoning the lake.

What is runoff in irrigation?

The fraction of rainfall that flows over the landscape from higher to lower elevations is known as runoff. Runoff is usually associated with negative implications such as erosion, water loss, etc. It can, however, be used for the surface irrigation of agricultural crops during rainfall events.

What is an aquifer in the water cycle?

An aquifer is a body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater. Groundwater enters an aquifer as precipitation seeps through the soil. It can move through the aquifer and resurface through springs and wells.

What does a runoff include?

Runoff includes not only the waters that travel over the land surface and through channels to reach a stream but also interflow, the water that infiltrates the soil surface and travels by means of gravity toward a stream channel (always above the main groundwater level) and eventually empties into the channel.

What is runoff and where does it go?

And now when it rains, the water (often called runoff or stormwater) runs off roofs and driveways into the street. Runoff picks up fertilizer, oil, pesticides, dirt, bacteria and other pollutants as it makes its way through storm drains and ditches - untreated - to our streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean.

What is runoff in water resources engineering?

Runoff is that portion of the rainfall or irrigation water which leaves a field either as surface or as subsurface flow. When rainfall intensity reaching the soil surface is less than the infiltration capacity, all the water is absorbed in to the soil.

What do you mean of runoff?

(Entry 1 of 2) 1 : a final race, contest, or election to decide an earlier one that has not resulted in a decision in favor of any one competitor. 2 : the portion of precipitation on land that ultimately reaches streams often with dissolved or suspended material.

What is runoff in the water cycle examples?

River runoff occurs when water falls so quickly that the river bank can no longer hold water. Thus, water spills over the river bank, flooding adjacent land. Eventually, water will infiltrate the soil, flow downstream to eventually reach the ocean, or be lost to evapotranspiration.

Where is the aquifer located?

Aquifers Overview

Unlike surface water, which is mostly found in the northern and eastern parts of the state, aquifers are widely distributed throughout California. Additionally, they are also often found in places where freshwater is most needed, for instance, in the Central Valley and Los Angeles.

What is the difference between infiltration and runoff?

Infiltration occurs when surface water enters the soil. This process is similar to pouring water onto a sponge. The sponge soaks up the water until it can hold no more. ... When this happens, we get overflow in the form of runoff, which is when surface water flows over land.

What is the sequence of activities in the water cycle?

There are four main stages in the water cycle. They are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Let's look at each of these stages. Evaporation: This is when warmth from the sun causes water from oceans, lakes, streams, ice and soils to rise into the air and turn into water vapour (gas).

What is runoff and its type?

There are three major types of runoff depending on the source: surface flow, interflow, and base flow. These were discussed in Module 101 and are expanded upon here. Surface Flow. Surface flow is water that has remained on the surface and moves as overland or channel flow.

What is runoff computation?

It computes the direct runoff (depth) or rainfall excess, storm-wise. ... This method assumes that the ratio of direct runoff (surface runoff) (Q) to the rainfall depth minus the initial losses (P—Ia) is equal to the ratio of actual retention of rainfall to the S, i.e. In which, CN is the curve number.

How does runoff get into the ocean?

When large tracts of land are plowed, the exposed soil can erode during rainstorms. Much of this runoff flows to the sea, carrying with it agricultural fertilizers and pesticides. ... Much of this, too, makes its way to the sea. Some water pollution actually starts as air pollution, which settles into waterways and oceans.

How does runoff affect the ocean?

Increased sediment runoff ultimately increases sedimentation on coastal reefs, reduces the clarity of coastal waters and restricts the growth of light-dependent plants and animals. ... smother coral reef organisms due to the settling of suspended sediment.

How does water cycle process takes place?

The water cycle shows the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere. ... Liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, and precipitates back to earth in the form of rain and snow. Water in different phases moves through the atmosphere (transportation).

Is combustion part of the carbon cycle?

Humans impact the carbon cycle during the combustion of any type of fossil fuel, which may include oil, coal, or natural gas. ... Humans intervene during by burning the fossil fuels. During combustion in the presence of air (oxygen), carbon dioxide and water molecules are released into the atmosphere.

Which part of the water cycle are caused by the force of gravity?

Gravity causes precipitation to fall from clouds and water to flow downward on the land through watersheds. Energy from the sun and the force of gravity drive the continual cycling of water among these reservoirs. As the water is heated, it changes state from a liquid to a gas. This process is called evaporation.
