Numerous target cells are present in this patient with hemoglobin E and beta thalassemia trait. Target cells, or codocytes, have an excess of cell membrane relative to cell volume. Macrocytic target cells can be seen in liver disease, and microcytic target cells may be seen in thalassemia.

What are target cells in the blood?

Codocytes, also known as target cells, are red blood cells that have the appearance of a shooting target with a bullseye.

What is target cell and in which condition it is found?

Target cells have excess membrane cholesterol and phospholipid and decreased cellular hemoglobin. Examples of other conditions in which target cells may be present include thalassemias, hemoglobin C disease, post splenectomy, and obstructive jaundice. ×

In what conditions is target cell found?

There are four major circumstances in which target cells appear as the major morphologic abnormality: thalassemia, hepatic disease with jaundice, hemoglobin C disorders, and the postsplenectomy state. Lesser numbers of target cells are found in sickle cell anemia, iron deficiency, and lead intoxication.

What are target cells in the body?

Target cells are cells that are receptive to a secreted hormone. dependent on three factors; the hormone levels in the blood, the receptor levels on the target cell, and hormone–receptor affinity.

Codocytes (Target Cells)

Can target cells be anywhere in the body?

Though they travel everywhere in the body, hormones only influence specific target cells. A hormone may have relatively few targets, affecting only a few kinds of cells. A different hormone may affect nearly every cell in the body.

How are target cells formed in thalassemia?

Artifact: Target cell formation occurs when blood smears are made when humidity is high. Hemoglobinopathies: There is a uneven distribution of hemoglobin within the cell, and an increased surface area to volume ratio. Note: Target cells have an increased surface area to volume ratio and decreased osmotic fragility.

Why do you see target cells in sickle cell?

A fraction of erythrocytes appear as target cells in stained blood smears in sickle cell disease, due to a inheritance of the hemoglobin variant Hb S, polymerizing upon deoxygenation. These cells appear in a three dimension as thin cups.

What are target cells indicative of?

Presence of cells called target cells may be due to: Deficiency of an enzyme called lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase. Abnormal hemoglobin, the protein in RBCs that carries oxygen (hemoglobinopathies) Iron deficiency. Liver disease.

What is a target cell anatomy?

Target cells/Target organs- are certain tissue cells or organs that a hormone will affect. Target cells must have receptors specific to a given hormone if that hormone is to trigger a response. Target cells must have a specific protein receptor for the hormone to bind or have an effect.

What are target cells Immunology?

1. A cell selectively affected by a particular agent, such as a virus, drug, or hormone.

What are target cells quizlet?

A target cell is a cell that possesses specific receptors for a particular hormone. Thus, a hormone affects only its specific target cell. You just studied 12 terms!

What are target organs?

A target organ is an organ in the body that is most affected by a specific chemical, drug, bacteria, or other substance. ... Lungs, liver, kidney, heart, blood, or circulatory system, brain or central nervous system, and skin (yes, the skin is considered an organ.)

What cells are targeted by sickle cell anemia?

In sickle cell anemia, the abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky and misshapen. Both mother and father must pass the defective form of the gene for a child to be affected. If only one parent passes the sickle cell gene to the child, that child will have the sickle cell trait.

Where do you see tear drop cells?

Teardrop cells may be seen in the setting of marrow infiltration (by fibrosis, granulomatous inflammation, hematologic or metastatic malignancy), splenic abnormalities, megaloblastic anemia, and thalassemia. True teardrop cells have slighly rounded or blunted ends.

Where are Howell Jolly bodies found?

Howell-Jolly bodies occur where there is no spleen or an non-functioning spleen, referred to as asplenia. They are usually one of these at most in a red cell, round, dark purple to red in color and often located peripherally on the red blood cell.

How do hormones reach target cells?

Hormones activate target cells by diffusing through the plasma membrane of the target cells (lipid-soluble hormones) to bind a receptor protein within the cytoplasm of the cell, or by binding a specific receptor protein in the cell membrane of the target cell (water-soluble proteins).

What are Microcytes?

Microcytosis is a term used to describe red blood cells that are smaller than normal. Anemia is when you have low numbers of properly functioning red blood cells in your body. In microcytic anemias, your body has fewer red blood cells than normal. The red blood cells it does have are also too small.

Where are the target cells for antidiuretic hormone?

The target cells of ADH are located in the tubular cells of the kidneys. Its effect is to increase epithelial permeability to water, allowing increased water reabsorption.

What is the target cell of estrogen?

Estrogens have multiple effects on the growth and development of cells in their target tissues, including the uterus, ovary, breast, bone marrow and brain. The hormone regulates the transcription of diverse genes in these tissues via the estrogen receptor, a nuclear transcription factor.

Where is target body site?

☞A CELL, TISSUE OR ORGAN , WHICH RESPONDS TO ANY PARTICULAR HORMONE IS CALLED TARGET SITE.

What are a target and receptor cells?

A target cell responds to a hormone because it bears receptors for the hormone. In other words, a particular cell is a target cell for a hormone if it contains functional receptors for that hormone, and cells which do not have such a receptor cannot be influenced directly by that hormone.

What is a target organ or tissue?

target organ. A tissue or organ upon which a hormone exerts its action; generally, a tissue or organ with appropriate receptors for a hormone. Synonym: target.
