The Peppered Moth is widespread in Britain and Ireland and frequently found in ordinary back gardens, yet its amazing story has made it famous all over the world. It is one of the best known examples of evolution by natural selection, Darwin's great discovery, and is often referred to as 'Darwin's moth'.

Where are peppered moths commonly found?

Peppered moths are common insects living in England, Europe, and North America. They are small moths, only 1.5 to 2.5 inches across. Their light wings are “peppered” with small dark spots.

Which color of moths survive better in the country?

As the trees darkened with soot, the light-colored moths were easier to see. They were eaten by birds more and more, while the rare dark colored moths blended in better on the darker trees. This made the dark colored moths have a higher survival rate.

Why did the dark moth population increase?

The evolution of the peppered moth is an evolutionary instance of directional colour change in the moth population as a consequence of air pollution during the Industrial Revolution. The frequency of dark-coloured moths increased at that time, an example of industrial melanism.

How a moth went to the dark side?

By 1970, in some polluted regions nearly 99 percent of peppered moths were now black. ... Pollution didn't make the moths black. It just gave a cloaking advantage to any moths that carried the genetic change that turned their wings black. And when the pollution disappeared, so did the dark moths' advantage.

How do you find moths at night?

It is well known that moths are attracted to lights at night, though the reason for this remains unclear. Try leaving an outside or porch light on after dark, and look for moths on lighted windows or lit walls and fences. Low-energy bulbs attract moths and are better for the environment.

What do moths eat?

Many moths feed on nectar just like butterflies, but some species of short-lived moths do not feed at all. Female moths attract males using scents (pheromones) which the males detect with their antennae.

What would happen if there were no predators in the forest?

Why do biologists think the dark morph of the moths became more common in the 1800's what was the selective pressure?

By the late 19th century, the light-colored moths were rare, and the moths with dark patterns were abundant. The cause of this change was hypothesized to be selective predation by birds (J.W. Tutt, 1896).

Why would dark moths have an advantage?

The same birds would find the dark moth twice as often if the bark on the tree was light. This supported the idea that dark moths had a survival advantage in a dark forest. ... He had experimentally shown that if the moth's color matched the environment, it had a better chance of survival.

What environmental factors are causing changes to the moth population?

When the environment changed, due to pollution, the moth population shifted because light-colored moths became easier to see so they were eaten more often. Organisms that survive have a better chance of reproducing so the population continues to grow.
