Coryneform bacteria (“diphtheroids”) are ubiquitous in nature. They are found on human skin and mucous membranes, on plants, in soil, and in freshwater and saltwater. Humans are the only known reservoir of C. diphtheriae, although a novel strain was isolated from cats in West Virginia.

Are diphtheroids disease causing?

Diphtheroids are commonly isolated in laboratory cultures but are often regarded as contaminants. However evidence has been available to suggest that these organisms can cause a wide range of infections.

Are diphtheroids normal flora?

Diphtheroids have traditionally been considered part of the normal Page 2 commensal flora of the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, urinary tract and conjuctiva. In fact, about 12-30% of humans carry C. urealyticum as part of their normal skin flora.

Where does Corynebacterium come from?

Habitat. Corynebacterium species occur commonly in nature in soil, water, plants, and food products. The nondiphtheiroid Corynebacterium species can even be found in the mucosa and normal skin flora of humans and animals.

Are diphtheroids bacterial?

Coryneform bacilli, also known as diphtheroids, are Gram-positive, irregular rod-shaped bacteria that encompass a wide range of genera, such as Corynebacterium, Brevibacterium, Dermabacter, Microbacterium, and Cellulomonas.

What are rare Diphtheroids?

Diphtheroids are defined as aerobic, non-sporulating, pleomorphic Gram-positive bacilli which are more uniformly stained than Corynebacterium diphtheriae, lack the metachromatic granules and are arranged in a palisade manner. They are usually commensals of the skin and mucous membranes. They differ from C.

What antibiotic treats Diphtheroids?

Diphtheroids. Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for nondiphtherial corynebacteria infections. Many species and groups are sensitive to various antibiotics, including penicillins, macrolide antibiotics, rifampin, and fluoroquinolones.

Where is Corynebacterium found in humans?

They are ubiquitous and can be found on the skin and in the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. The primary pathogen in this group is Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the etiologic agent of diphtheria. Additional corynebacteria include 45 species, 30 of which on rare occasion cause human disease.

Where is diphtheria most commonly found?

Endemic in many countries in Asia, the South Pacific, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Since 2016, respiratory diphtheria outbreaks have occurred in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Venezuela, Haiti, South Africa, and Yemen.

Where is Corynebacterium striatum found?

It is generally found as a ubiquitous microorganism, and, as a commensal of humans, colonising the nasopharynx. It has recently been recognised as an emerging pathogen although the genus of Corynebacterium is not usually considered to be pathogenic.

Where is the most bacteria found in the human body?

The majority of the bacteria found in the body live in the human gut. There are billions of bacteria living there (Figure 2).

Can Diphtheroids cause UTI?

Corynebacterium urealyticum (formerly known as Corynebacterium CDC group D2) is a gram-positive, slow growing, urease-positive microorganism with a diphtheroid morphology. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) which are caused by C.

What does resident flora mean in a urine culture?

The microorganisms that usually occupy a particular body site are called the resident flora. Cells of the resident flora outnumber a person's own cells 10 to 1. Microorganisms that colonize people for hours to weeks but do not establish themselves permanently are called transient flora.

Is diphtheria still around?

Diphtheria rarely occurs in the United States and Western Europe, where children have been vaccinated against the condition for decades. However, diphtheria is still common in developing countries where vaccination rates are low.

Is pertussis a virus?

Pertussis is also known as whooping cough. It is a highly infectious bacterial disease involving the respiratory tract. It is caused by a bacterium (Bordetella pertussis or Bordetella Parapertussis ) that is found in the mouth, nose and throat of an infected person.

Where did diphtheria originate from?

The diphtheria bacterium was first identified in the 1880s and in the 1890s diphtheria antitoxin was developed in Germany to treat victims of the disease.

Where is diphtheria endemic in India?

Numerous states across India have reported diphtheria outbreaks, including Assam in 2010, Karnataka in 2011, and Andhra Pradesh in 2014 (4). In December 2017, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program of Telangana state reported a rise in diphtheria cases.

What is the medical term for diphtheria?

Diphtheria: An acute infectious upper respiratory tract disease that affects the throat. It is caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Symptoms include sore throat and mild fever at first. As the disease progresses, a membranous substance forms in the throat that makes it difficult to breathe and swallow.

Is diphtheria common in India?

The number of cases reported to WHO has declined from nearly 100,000 cases in 1980 to 2,500 cases in 2015. A similar decline was also observed in India; however, India accounted for majority of diphtheria cases reported globally. During 2001–2015, nearly half of the diphtheria cases reported globally were from India.

Where is Pseudomonas found?

Pseudomonas aeruginosa commonly inhabits soil, water, and vegetation. It is found in the skin of some healthy persons and has been isolated from the throat (5 percent) and stool (3 percent) of nonhospitalized patients.

What part of the human body does Staphylococcus colonize?

The nose is the most important site of S. aureus colonization [3], but S. aureus is also found in the pharynx, perineum, axillae and on the skin (predominantly on the hands, chest and abdomen) [4–6].

Where is C Xerosis found?

Background. Corynebacterium xerosis is a commensal organism found in skin and mucous membranes of humans. It is considered an unusual pathogen, and it is rarely found in human and animal clinical samples.

How was diphtheria cured?

In 1890, it was discovered that serum made from the blood of immunized animals contained an "antitoxin" which, when injected, cured patients suffering from diphtheria.

What causes diphtheria?

Diphtheria bacteria usually spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, like from coughing or sneezing. Diphtheria is a serious infection caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae that make a toxin (poison).

How is diphtheria prevented?

Vaccination. Keeping up to date with recommended vaccines is the best way to prevent diphtheria. In the United States, there are four vaccines used to prevent diphtheria: DTaP, Tdap, DT, and Td. Each of these vaccines prevents diphtheria and tetanus; DTaP and Tdap also help prevent pertussis (whooping cough).
