Tidal interactions also cause Triton's orbit, which is already closer to Neptune than the Moon's is to Earth, to gradually decay further; predictions are that 3.6 billion years from now, Triton will pass within Neptune's Roche limit.

When did Neptune capture Triton?

Triton, largest of Neptune's moons, whose unusual orbital characteristics suggest that it formed elsewhere in the solar system and was later captured by Neptune. It was discovered by the English astronomer William Lassell in October 1846, only a few weeks after the discovery of Neptune itself.

Why do we think Triton will eventually be broken apart by Neptune?

Because of the nature of its orbit, the moon will eventually fall into Neptune's gravity well and break up.

Is there life on Triton?

Unfortunately Triton is inside the magnetosphere of Neptune, which is very harmful to life. Overall, the environment sounds unfriendly to life as we know it on earth, because of the magnetosphere and the cold.

How did Neptune capture Triton?

Triton is unique among all the large moons in the solar system because it orbits Neptune in a direction opposite to the planet's rotation (a "retrograde" orbit). ... Gravitational interactions during a close approach to Neptune then pulled Triton away from its binary companion to become a satellite of Neptune.

Why Does Neptune's Moon, Triton, Orbit Backwards?

What planet has 21 moons?

In 1999 three new moons were discovered orbiting Uranus, a great gasball of a planet about 2 billion miles from Earth. The discovery raised the number of Uranian moons to 21, the most, as far as is known, in the skies of any planet.

Is Triton geologically active?

During its 1989 flyby, Voyager 2 also found Triton has active geysers, making it one of the few geologically active moons in our solar system.

Can we colonize Neptune?

Neptune and its satellites could also be used for colonization, but are farther away, and Neptune has a higher surface gravity than Uranus. ... Tapping such geothermal energy would make colonizing a cryogenic world like Triton feasible, supplemented by nuclear fusion power.

Does it rain diamonds in Neptune?

This "diamond rain" would convert potential energy into heat and help drive the convection that generates Neptune's magnetic field. ... When they did this to polystyrene, nearly every carbon atom in the material was incorporated into diamond crystals within a nanosecond.

Can you live on Pluto?

As such, there is simply no way life could survive on the surface of Pluto. Between the extreme cold, low atmospheric pressure, and constant changes in the atmosphere, no known organism could survive. However, that does not rule out the possibility of life being found inside the planet.

Is Triton doomed?

Triton is most certainly a doomed moon. Strong tidal forces between the former planet and Neptune cause Triton to orbit in reverse. As its orbit decays, Triton is slowly moving closer to Neptune. In less than 100 million years, the big moon will approach within 2-3,000 miles of Neptune.

What will eventually happen to Triton?

Millions of years from now, Triton will move so close to Neptune that tidal forces will rip Triton apart, forming bright new rings around the giant planet. ... The thicker atmosphere and higher temperatures on Triton could create more and bigger geysers, and spread their plumes over larger regions of this frigid moon.

Why is Triton doomed?

Long ago, as it sank from a higher orbit, Triton passed close to Nereid. ... The smaller moon, buffeted by Triton's more powerful gravity, may have been hurled into the elliptical orbit it now follows.

Does Triton have oxygen?

Breathable air is basically 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen, so the nitrogen-rich atmosphere on Triton can't be that bad, right? Yeah, not so much. It's better than trying to breathe in a vacuum, but not by much.

Why does Neptune's moon Triton orbit backwards?

This is caused by the moon's high albedo. Very little sunlight is absorbed by the surface. Triton's axis of rotation is tilted 157 degrees with respect to Neptune's axis. This causes the moon's polar and equatorial regions to be alternately pointed towards the Sun.

How close is Triton to Neptune's Roche limit?

For nominal parameters (QN = iO~, QT ~ 102) in state 1, Triton will reach Neptune's Roche limit in ~3.6 Gyr with a decrease in its orbital inclination from the present 159° to 145°.

What would happen if you fell into Uranus?

Uranus is a ball of ice and gas, so you can't really say that it has a surface. If you tried to land a spacecraft on Uranus, it would just sink down through the upper atmosphere of hydrogen and helium, and into the liquid icy center. ... And this is why the surface of Uranus has its color.

How many years will it take to get to Neptune?

8. Neptune (Voyager) Want to go to Neptune? It'll take 12 years.

How long can the earth survive without the Sun?

A relatively simple calculation would show that the Earth's surface temperature would drop by a factor of two about every two months if the Sun were shut off. The current mean temperature of the Earth's surface is about 300 Kelvin (K). This means in two months the temperature would drop to 150K, and 75K in four months.

Is Titan habitable?

Habitability. Robert Zubrin has pointed out that Titan possesses an abundance of all the elements necessary to support life, saying "In certain ways, Titan is the most hospitable extraterrestrial world within our solar system for human colonization." The atmosphere contains plentiful nitrogen and methane.

Can we colonize Pluto?

Colonists might not colonize these worlds until the next two to three hundred years. A plutonian civilization would be established underground and an outpost can be built. It is very likely that Pluto, Charon, and other dwarf planets and moons on the outer edge of the solar system contain large amounts of ice.

How would you survive on Neptune?

To find life on Neptune, the planet would need to have a source of energy that bacterial life can exploit, as well as a standing source of liquid water. At its surface, the temperature of Neptune dips down to 55 Kelvin. That's very cold, and there's no way liquid water could exist.

Does Triton have more gravity than Earth?

With an average temperature of minus 391 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 235 Celsius), Triton is the coldest- known object in the solar system. ... Though, that's assuming you could get used to walking in Triton's incredibly low gravity, which is about 8 percent of Earth's gravity, or half of the moon's gravity.

How big is Triton vs Neptune?

Also, with a diameter 5.5% that of Neptune, it is the largest moon of a gas giant relative to its planet in terms of diameter, although Titan is bigger relative to Saturn in terms of mass.

How close is Triton to the sun?

Ices comprise its reddish visible surface (Figure 40.1), and the freshness of the ices cause Triton to be one of the most reflective bodies in the solar system (its total or Bond albedo is ≈0.85). This, combined with the satellite's distance from the Sun (30 AU), makes Triton's surface a very cold place (≈38 K).
