Spirometry, derived from the Latin words SPIRO (to breathe) and METER (to measure), is a medical test which provides diagnostic information to assess a patient's lung function. The spirometer was originally invented in the 1840's by John Hutchinson an English surgeon.

How long has the spirometry been around?

The first attempt to measure pulmonary volumes goes as far back as the second century, when Galen (Claudius Galenus of Pergamo, A.D. 129–circa 200–216), the famous Greek physician, tried to determine respiratory volume by having a child breathe into a bladder.

When was the incentive spirometer invented?

The first documented report of incentive spirometry (IS) as a treatment technique appears to be that of Van de Water et al (Van de Water 1972).

Who invented lung capacity?

Hutchinson is regarded as the inventor of vital capacity because he found that with every inch of height vital capacity increased by eight cubic inches. He also used his machine for the prediction of premature mortality.

Is spirometer good for lungs?

An incentive spirometer can keep the lungs active during bed rest. Keeping the lungs active with a spirometer is thought to lower the risk of developing complications like atelectasis, pneumonia, bronchospasms, and respiratory failure.

Can spirometer increase lung capacity?

Using an incentive spirometer teaches you how to take slow, deep breaths, and can be helpful to maximize lung capacity after surgery or when you have a progressive condition, such as lung disease. By using this device, you're taking an active step in your recovery and healing.

What race has the highest lung capacity?

In most studies, whites had higher lung capacity than blacks, Chinese or Indians; explanations for findings centred on innate difference (10).

How does ethnicity affect spirometry?

Spirometers use a race-based correction or a so-called ethnic adjustment, which assumes a 10–15% smaller lung capacity for Black patients and 4–6% smaller lung capacity for Asian patients compared with their White counterparts.

: an instrument for measuring the air entering and leaving the lungs (as in determining lung function in the diagnosis of pulmonary disease)

How Does height affect lung capacity?

Height (taller people tend to have larger chests and hence larger total lung capacities) Location (people living at high altitudes tend to have larger capacities to compensate for the lower atmospheric pressure) Lifestyle (obese people and smokers tend to have lower capacities and higher rates of ventilation)

What is white lung disease?

asbestosis, also called white lung, lung disease that is caused by the prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibres.

Does ethnicity play a role in lung function testing?

Use of ethnic-specific equations help to minimize such differences, thereby improving the accuracy with which lung disease can be identified and treated during childhood, as well as enabling the true impact of adverse environmental or socioeconomic exposures to be assessed, irrespective of ethnic background.

What is the purpose of spirometer?
