Shotcrete was invented in the early 1900's by American taxidermist Carl E. Akeley by propelling a dry material through a hose with water injected at the nozzle to fill plaster models of animals. Soon after, it was discovered the same method was an effective way to repair buildings.

Who invented shotcrete?

Shotcrete, then known as gunite, was invented in 1907 by American taxidermist Carl Akeley to repair the crumbling façade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago (the old Palace of Fine Arts from the World's Columbian Exposition).

Is shotcrete stronger than concrete?

What is Shotcrete? Frequently used in underground applications, shotcrete is a wet- or dry-mix concrete that is pneumatically propelled at high velocity through a hose and nozzle. ... And because the spray application process reduces the water/cement ratio, it's generally stronger than CIP.

When was gunite first used?

The first reported use of shotcrete for underground support in North America was the use of gunite (dry-mix shotcrete) in the Brucetown Experimental Mine in 1914. It was used primarily to protect and maintain excavated rock surfaces from deterioration from exposure to water and air (Kobler 1966).

What is better gunite or shotcrete?

Durability. Gunite generally lasts longer and maintains a higher quality than shotcrete. For instance, gunite tends to dry faster than shotcrete, leading to a much smoother surface and avoiding significant cracks from shrinking. Gunite can also withstand up to 9500 psi, a much higher psi than shotcrete.

What is Shotcrete?

Is shotcrete more expensive than gunite?

Gunite generally allows builders to take more time to complete the project properly, since they can stop and start as needed. Gunite tends to be less expensive than shotcrete, and it can result in fewer errors in the construction process.

Can you shotcrete yourself?

DIY shotcrete is achievable for a hobbyist, owner/builder or a contractor. It is all about the speed of delivery you want to accomplish.

How thick can shotcrete be applied?

There is no stated maximum thickness for shotcrete used in shear walls or any other type of wall. Walls have been successfully placed to a thickness of 36 in. (914 mm) for some time. The two main concerns are the heat of hydration and proper encapsulation of the reinforcing steel.

How long does it take to shotcrete a pool?

This takes up to 28 days and is achieved through soaker hoses that spray the pool walls and continuously recycle the water. Reputable high-end builders are experienced in all of these critical processes, giving you the peace of mind that your pool is built to last.

Can cement be sprayed?

There are many applications and uses for sprayed concrete. ... Dry process sprayed concrete: a predetermined dry mix of cement and aggregate is propelled through a spraying nozzle, where a finely atomised spray of water is added to the stream of materials to hydrate the cement.

Is shotcrete cheaper than concrete?

In addition, shotcrete — while less expensive than poured concrete — is more expensive than gunite. Finally, shotcrete takes a significant amount of time as compared to poured concrete, making it a less than ideal choice for large foundations, structural piers or other large projects.

Can you do shotcrete in the rain?

Shotcrete needs to be protected from rain until it obtains its final set, usually 4 or 5 hours. ... The exposure to rain would prove beneficial as the rain would assure the presence of moisture for continued curing.

What is the cost of shotcrete?

The cost of Shotcrete is determined by per square foot, the scope of the job, and geographical location. The cost of hiring a professional contractor may be in the range of 125-195 Dollars, and it all relies on the scope of the job. The quote you get should include the delivery, shooting, and forming of the Shotcrete.

What type of pool is gunite?

Gunite pools use a rebar framework that is sprayed over with a concrete and sand mixture. Gunite is exceedingly durable, so swimming pools made of this substance are built to last. The versatility of gunite swimming pools means more than the ability to create an unlimited array of shapes.

What is shotcrete made of?

Shotcrete is also made of sand, water and cement. Like gunite, shotcrete is sprayed into place. Shotcrete is considered a “wet mix” because the water and dry mix are prepared prior to arrival. The premixed cement is shot out of a nozzle to form the pool.

What is Guniting process?

Guniting is a process used in construction for the application of slope stabilization and certain rehabilitation purpose mainly in the construction of retaining walls, swimming pool construction, tunnel construction, in fluid tank construction and some of the concrete repair works.

How long after shotcrete can you plaster?

What is the recommended cure time for shotcrete pools and spas so that shrinkage cracks in finished tile work can be avoided? Concrete, when applied using the shotcrete process, or cast-in-place, needs to cure for 7 days. Water is the best curing method (7 continuous days).

How thick is shotcrete in pool?

To be structurally sound, a concrete pool shell should generally be 6 inches thick. Depending on the engineer and the soil condition, it may be more. (On top of that, the plaster interior finish should be at least ⅜ inch thick.)

Do you need to wet shotcrete?

Shotcrete / concrete is ready for water as soon as the initial set is complete, which is about 4-6 hrs after placement. Water is applied to aid in hydration/curing, a process which decays exponentially, so watering is most critical in the first hours/days after placement.

What is the slump of shotcrete?

The average slump and air content for the desirable “before shooting” shotcrete are 5 inch and 10.2%, respectively, which are much higher than those of CIP concrete.

What is the shotcrete concrete?

shotcrete, also called (trademark) Gunite, concrete applied by spraying. Shotcrete is a mixture of aggregate and portland cement, conveyed by compressed air to the nozzle of a spray gun, where water is added. The wet mixture is then sprayed in place and may be carved or troweled almost immediately.

Why is shotcrete used?

Shotcrete is a method of applying concrete projected at high velocity primarily on to a vertical or overhead surface. ... The dry-mix shotcrete process adds water to the mix at the nozzle. Shotcrete is used in new construction and repairs and is suitable for curved and thin elements (ACI 506R).

Do gunite pools hurt your feet?

Many swimmers and children find the rough bottom in a gunite pool to be very abrasive and uncomfortable. It is not uncommon to scrape and or irritate your feet if the swimmer is in the pool for long periods of time and sitting on the pools steps or benches will certainly snag a swim suit.

Can gunite pools be salt water?

If you're looking for a simple answer, the answer is yes. Saltwater chlorinators are perfectly safe for gunite pools. ... As far as concerns about the gunite surfacing experiencing corrosion or pitting because of the salt in the water, rest assured salt is no more damaging to the structure of concrete than chlorine.
