The choke is located before the throttle, and manages the total amount of air going into the engine. The choke is only used when starting a cold engine. When doing a cold start, the choke should be closed to limit the amount of air going in.

Is it bad to run an engine with the choke on?

Leaving the choke on while operating will result in excessive fuel consumption, irregular engine power performance and eventually may even damage the engine. ... Some engines utilize a manual fuel primer bulb to enrich the ratio of fuel in the fuel air mixture for initial engine starting.

What does choking the engine do?

A choke valve/cable is designed to restrict the flow of air in the carburettor of an engine. This helps enrich the fuel-air mixture, improving the ability to start an engine in low temperature conditions. ... Simply put, the choke is about making more fuel available for the engine to use.

Do you need choke in warm weather?

Usually cold weather will be a no brained and it needs full choke, easing off the choke as it warms. In warm weather it might need half choke, and for not long at all. You'll have to play with it.

Does a choke let more air in?

The choke is a plate in the carburetor that opens and closes to allow more or less air into the engine. Similar to the throttle, the choke plate rotates from a horizontal to vertical position to open up the passageway and allow more air to get by.

Engine Starting | Too Much Choke | How it effects Engines

How long should you leave the choke on?

After 30 seconds is usually enough for most bikes. Especially a small thumper. Just reduce the choke slowly. If it wont idle smoothly (sounds like an asthmatic pensioner) then it probably wants the choke on a bit longer.

Why does engine only run with choke on?

If a motorcycle or ATV only runs with the choke on, it's because the richer “choke on” mixture is actually closer to the engine's normal operating fuel mixture than the leaner “choke off” mixture. So when the choke is turned off, the engine gets too little fuel and too much air for it to run and it stalls.

How do you know if choke is on or off?

The “choke” is off when the choke lever is down or when the choke lever is facing you if your choke is a handle bar mount. Choke off means that the choke plate is not covering the carb throat.

What happens if I drive with choke on?

It will not damage the engine at all. All that will happen is that it will run richer, thus using more fuel. If you did it for thousands of miles you'd probably end up with more deposits in the engine/exhaust, but even that is easy to sort.

Do you have to run with choke on?

An engine that will fire and run with the choke closed but dies when the choke is opened likely has debris at least partially blocking the fuel passages in the carburetor. In this condition the closed choke provides enough extra fuel to enter the engine to overcome the lack of fuel flowing through the other passages.

Why does my Briggs and Stratton engine only run on choke?

any time you need the choke on for the engine to run you are shutting down the air flow because there is not enough fuel getting to the cyl. ... there is still some passage inside the carb blocked not letting enough fuel into the cyl. for the engine to run. or there is an a gasket on the intake leaking sucking air.

Do I need a choke on my carburetor?

When an engine is cold, it requires a richer Air/Fuel Mixture to get started. ... As the engine warms up, it is able to run on a leaner mixture. The choke plate must be opened gradually to allow more air into the engine. Carburetors are available with or without a choke.

What happens if you leave the choke on after the engine starts running?

Leaving the choke on for too long will cause unnecessary engine wear and waste fuel. This is also bad for the environment. The choke is mainly used during winter to help with starting. The engine needs its fuel to be vaporised in order to burn it.

How does choke work on carburetor?

By restricting the flow of air into the throat of the carburetor, the choke valve reduces the pressure inside the throat, which causes a proportionally greater amount of fuel to be pushed from the main jet into the combustion chamber during cold-running operation.

How do you start a choke engine?

1. Pull the manual choke knob to decrease the air intake and provide a richer fuel-to-air ratio before you start the ignition. ...
2. Pull out the choke knob more for a cold engine start, or on a cold day. ...
3. Switch on the ignition and start the engine.

Why does my 2 stroke engine only run on choke?

When a two-stroke only runs on half choke it is usually the result of a dirty fuel cap, a leaking gasket, a clogged carburetor, or a gunky passageway. ... You can fix these problems by cleaning the carburetor, removing the fuel, and adding new gas.

What happens if you leave the choke on overnight?

What Happens If You Leave The Choke On Overnight? Nothing will happen if you leave the choke on overnight. Since the engine is off, the carburetor isn't in operation and nothing is moving internally in the engine no harm will come.

How long should you warm up a carbureted engine?

Auto experts today say that you should warm up the car no more than 30 seconds before you start driving in winter. "The engine will warm up faster being driven," the EPA and DOE explain. Indeed, it is better to turn your engine off and start it again than to leave it idling.

Why are carbureted engines hard to start in the cold?

From Wikipedia: When the engine is cold, fuel vaporizes less readily and tends to condense on the walls of the intake manifold, starving the cylinders of fuel and making the engine difficult to start; thus, a richer mixture (more fuel to air) is required to start and run the engine until it warms up.

What can a dirty carburetor cause?

When there's too much dirt in the carburetor, the required combination of air and fuel can't travel through the passage to the engine, causing a turn over, but no catch or actual start. It's running lean. An engine “runs lean” when the balance of fuel and air gets thrown off.

Does a fuel injected car have a carburetor?

Fuel injected engines do not need carb heat, but they do need electric fuel pumps as a starting flow, as well as a backup for the engine-driven fuel pump.
