When air runs into a mountain, the side of the mountain that it hits first is called the windward side. This is where air is forced to rise, and this is the side of the mountain that often sees the heaviest precipitation.

What happens on the windward side of a mountain?

The windward side faces the wind and typically receives warm, moist air, often from an ocean. As wind hits a mountain, it is forced upward and begins to cool. Cool air reaches its dew point more quickly, and the result is rain and snow.

What is the windward side of a mountain called?

In all circumstances in which the terms are used, the windward side of the reference point is the one that faces the prevailing wind. The leeward—or "lee"—side is the one sheltered from the wind by the reference point.

Is the windward side of a mountain Wet?

Once the damp air makes landfall on an island, it ascends hills and mountains to form condensation, clouds, and precipitation. As the air moves to the other side of the island, it warms up and dries out. Thus, an island's windward side is wetter and more verdant than its drier leeward side.

Why does the windward side of a mountain receives more rain?

The windward side is subjected to prevailing winds which contains enough moisture and on striking with the surrounding mountains and hills which acts as a barrier for them, they sheds their containing moisture in that particular place. That's why the windward side receives more rainfall.

Windward v.s. Leeward Side of a Mountain

Which side of mountain gets more rain?

Much of airborne moisture falls as rain on the windward side of mountains. This often means that the land on the other side of the mountain (the leeward side) gets far less rain—an effect called a "rain shadow"—which often produces a desert.

Which side receives more rainfall windward or leeward?

The windward sides of mountainous slopes get ample rainfall by striking with the rain-bearing winds first, while the leeward sides cannot get sufficient rainfall due to being on other side where the winds become almost dry due to imparting rainfall in windward due to loss of major part of moisture and water drops.

How does the windward and leeward side of the mountain affect climate?

As the air moves up the windward side of a mountain, it cools, and the volume decreases. As a result, humidity increases and orographic clouds and precipitation can develop. When the air descends the leeward side, it warms and is drier because the moisture in the air was wrung out during the ascent.

Why is one side of a mountain dry?

The mountains block most precipitation from falling in the valley, creating a dry climate where few plants grow. A rain shadow is a patch of land that has been forced to become a desert because mountain ranges blocked all plant-growing, rainy weather. On one side of the mountain, wet weather systems drop rain and snow.

What is the leeward side of a ridge?

The downwind side of an obstacle such as a ridge. Wind erodes snow from the windward (upwind) side of an obstacle and deposits snow on the leeward (downwind) side. Deposited snow looks smooth and rounded.

What are the windward and Leeward Islands?

The Windward Islands comprise Barbados, Grenada, the Grenadines, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. ... The Leeward Islands are composed of the many smaller islands that make up the Lesser Antilles, including Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Nevis, Redonda, Saba, St.

Why are they called the Windward Islands?

Windward Islands Overview

These islands are called Windward because they are more windward to arriving Caribbean cruise ships than the Leeward Islands in the North of the Lesser Antilles. Windward means upwind from a given reference point and leeward means down wind from a given reference point.

What is the synonym of leeward?

In this page you can discover 24 synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic expressions, and related words for leeward, like: weatherward, lee, peaceful, skerry, sheltered, leeside, quiet, still, secure, undisturbed and serene.

What is lee side of island?

The leeward side is the side protected by the elevation of the island from the prevailing wind, and is typically the drier side of an island. ... In the case of an archipelago, windward islands are upwind and leeward islands are the downwind ones.

Which adiabatic processes affect the windward and leeward sides of the mountain?

When air moves across a mountain, its temperature changes due to the adiabatic process. If the mountain is high enough, precipitation occurs on the windward side and humidity decreases on the leeward side of the mountain. This phenomenon is called orographic precipitation.

What side of the mountain gets more snow?

Because of this rising and sinking of moist air over the slopes, the windward side often gets much more rain and snowfall than the lee side. However, not all storms are the same. Sometimes instead of flowing up and over the mountains, the air can go around the mountains.

Why is one side of the mountain lush?

Colder air can hold less water vapour than warm air so that the air becomes saturated with water and it condenses out into clouds. With enough condensation you get rain - a lot of it on the western side of the mountains.

Is the leeward side cooler?

Rain. As condensation occurs, it releases heat into the surrounding air. ... As the air continues to descend towards sea level, atmospheric pressure increases which causes a temperature increase. Because of all of this (scientifically called adiabatic warming), the leeward side is generally warmer and drier.

Why do deserts often form on the leeward side of mountains?

Rainshadow deserts form on the leeward side of mountain ranges. Moisture in the winds approaching from the windward side experience adiabatic cooling, initiating precipitation on the windward side. The cool, dry air mass then floods up onto the coastline to form a desert.

What happens to air as it sinks down the leeward side of a mountain?

Answer. Answer: It will happen is precipitation falls as the air rises over the mountains, the air will be dry as it sinks on the leeward size. This dry, sinking air causes a rainshadow effect , which creates many of the world's deserts.

Why leeward side gets more rain than windward side give an example in support of your answer?

Air is being pushed up in windward side, cools and condenses the water vapour , due which heavy rain falls. Moisture has been wrung out on leeward side and air becomes warm due to descending motion which evaporates the water molecules.

What is the side of a mountain called?

When air runs into a mountain, the side of the mountain that it hits first is called the windward side. ... The opposite side of the mountain is called the leeward side and usually sees much less precipitation.

Which side of mountains remains relatively dry?

The leeward side of mountains remains relatively dry.

Which side of the mountain often receives the most precipitation?

The windward receives more precipitation than the leeward.
