Description. Defibrillation - is the treatment for immediately life-threatening arrhythmias with which the patient does not have a pulse, ie ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT).

What are the indications for defibrillation?

• Pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT)
• Ventricular fibrillation (VF)
• Cardiac arrest due to or resulting in VF.

What are the 3 shockable rhythms?

Shockable Rhythms: Ventricular Tachycardia, Ventricular Fibrillation, Supraventricular Tachycardia.

When do you use a defibrillator during CPR?

1. call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.
2. push hard and fast in the centre of the chest to start CPR.
3. shock using a defibrillator as soon as possible to restart the heart , if one is available.

Do you defibrillate when the heart stops?

Defibrillators are devices that restore a normal heartbeat by sending an electric pulse or shock to the heart. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, a heartbeat that is uneven or that is too slow or too fast. Defibrillators can also restore the heart's beating if the heart suddenly stops.

What does the C in CPR mean?

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. ... CPR combines rescue breathing and chest compressions. Rescue breathing provides oxygen to the person's lungs. Chest compressions keep oxygen-rich blood flowing until the heartbeat and breathing can be restored.

How many times do you defibrillate a patient?

6. How many times can a defibrillator be used? You can use a defibrillator for as long as there are replacement parts available. The end of life for a defibrillator comes from when the manufacturer can no longer obtain parts (electrodes/pads, batteries).

When should you not use defibrillator?

1. The Person is Suffering From a Heart Attack. ...
2. The AED Is Faulty or Has Expired Parts. ...
3. The Victim Has a DNR. ...
4. The Victim Is Wet or Lying in Water. ...
5. The Victim Has a Medication Patch or Pacemaker. ...
6. The Victim Has a Hairy Chest.

What are the current guidelines for CPR?

• Check the scene and the person. Make sure the scene is safe, then tap the person on the shoulder and shout "Are you OK?" to ensure that the person needs help.
• Call 911 for assistance. ...
• Open the airway. ...
• Check for breathing. ...
• Push hard, push fast. ...
• Deliver rescue breaths. ...
• Continue CPR steps.

Do you defibrillate asystole?

Asystole is a non-shockable rhythm. Therefore, if asystole is noted on the cardiac monitor, no attempt at defibrillation should be made. High-quality CPR should be continued with minimal (less than five seconds) interruption.

What is the difference between AF and VT?

Atrial fibrillation occurs in the heart's upper two chambers, also known as the atria. Ventricular fibrillation occurs in the heart's lower two chambers, known as the ventricles.

What rhythms are shockable?

The two shockable rhythms are ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT) while the non–shockable rhythms include sinus rhythm (SR), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), premature ventricualr contraction (PVC), atrial fibrilation (AF) and so on.

Why is early defibrillation so important?

Early defibrillation is critical because ventricular fibrillation is the most common initial dysrhythmia of sudden cardiac arrest, defibrillation is the only treatment, and survival from ventricular fibrillation is determined by time.

When do you do cardioversion?

Cardioversion is a procedure used to return an abnormal heartbeat to a normal rhythm. This procedure is used when the heart is beating very fast or irregular. This is called an arrhythmia. Arrhythmias can cause problems such as fainting, stroke, heart attack, and even sudden cardiac death.

What defibrillation means?

: an electronic device that applies an electric shock to restore the rhythm of a fibrillating heart.

When should you use an AED?

When is an AED needed? AEDs are used to revive someone from sudden cardiac arrest. This usually occurs when a disruption in the heart's electrical activity causes a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a fast and irregular heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation).

What does AED stand for?

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a medical condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly.

What should you do immediately after performing defibrillation on a patient?

Aim: Current consensus guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) recommend that chest compressions resume immediately after defibrillation attempts and that rhythm and pulse checks be deferred until completion of 5 compression:ventilation cycles or minimally for 2min.

Who can defibrillate in a hospital environment?

Anyone can use a defibrillator – they have verbal and visual instructions to guide people. A person cannot hurt someone by using a defibrillator. A defibrillator only shocks a person who is in cardiac arrest.

Can you use a defib on someone with a pacemaker?

Yes. The important thing to do is make sure in this case that the pads (electrodes) do not come into contact with pacemaker. The upside of this is that the device will be visible and usually located on the upper left side of the persons chest.

When will a defib deliver a shock?

A shock is only indicated if the victim's heart is in ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT). The AED will automatically analyse the heart rhythm of the victim and inform you, the rescuer, whether a shock is advised. (i.e. not ventricular fibrillation (VT) or ventricular tachycardia (VT).

Where are AICD placed?

An Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, (AICD), is a small electronic device that is implanted into your chest to monitor and correct an abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. These devices are used to treat serious and life-threatening arrhythmias and are the most effective way of doing so.

When do you use shock paddles?

After someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, healthcare providers grab the paddles and deliver an electric shock to the patient to help restore a normal heart rhythm. Technology has given us the automated external defibrillator (AED). This is a small, lightweight, battery operated, portable defibrillator.
