breadth-first search is optimal if the path cost is a nondecreasing function of the depth of the node. The most common such scenario is that all actions have the same cost.

Why is BFS not optimal?

Optimal as in "produces the optimal path", not "is the fastest algorithm possible". When searching a state space for a path to a goal, DFS may produce a much longer path than BFS. Note that BFS is only optimal when actions are unweighted; if different actions have different weights, you need something like A*.

Which is optimal BFS or DFS?

Answer: If a search algorithm is optimal, then when it finds a solution it finds the best solution. What are the advantages of breadth-first search (BFS) over depth-first search (DFS)? Answer: BFS is complete and optimal, while DFS is not guaranteed to halt when there are loops.

What makes a search optimal?

A search algorithm is optimal if no other search algorithm uses less time or space or expands fewer nodes, both with a guarantee of solution quality. The optimal search algorithm would be one that picks the correct node at each choice.

Will depth first search find optimal solution?

BFS is good to use when the depth of the tree can vary or if a single answer is needed—for example, the shortest path in a tree. If the entire tree should be traversed, DFS is a better option. BFS always returns an optimal answer, but this is not guaranteed for DFS.

Is breadth-first search optimal why?

Completeness: BFS is complete, meaning for a given search tree, BFS will come up with a solution if it exists. Optimality: BFS is optimal as long as the costs of all edges are equal.

Is breadth-first search Complete?

Breadth-first search is complete, but depth-first search is not. When applied to infinite graphs represented implicitly, breadth-first search will eventually find the goal state, but depth first search may get lost in parts of the graph that have no goal state and never return.

Is Astar always optimal?

Since the estimates are optimistic, the other paths can be safely ignored. Also, A* is only optimal if two conditions are met: The heuristic is admissible, as it will never overestimate the cost.

Is greedy best-first search optimal?

Greedy best-first search expands nodes with minimal h(n). It is not optimal, but is often efficient.

What does it mean when an algorithm is optimal?

An algorithm can be said to be optimal if the function that describes its time complexity in the worst case is a lower bound of the function that describes the time complexity in the worst case of a problem that the algorithm in question solves.

Which search is complete and optimal *?

A* search algorithm is the best algorithm than other search algorithms. A* search algorithm is optimal and complete.

Which is true regarding BFS breadth-first search )?

Which is true regarding BFS (Breadth First Search)? Explanation: Regarding BFS-The entire tree so far been generated must be stored in BFS. ... Explanation: The problem space of means-end analysis has an initial state and one or more goal states.

What is best first search in artificial intelligence?

Best first search uses the concept of a priority queue and heuristic search. It is a search algorithm that works on a specific rule. The aim is to reach the goal from the initial state via the shortest path.

Is A * optimal?

A* is complete and optimal on graphs that are locally finite where the heuristics are admissible and monotonic. ... Because A* is monotonic, the path cost increases as the node gets further from the root.

What is breadth first search in artificial intelligence?

Breadth-First Search algorithm is a graph traversing technique, where you select a random initial node (source or root node) and start traversing the graph layer- wise in such a way that all the nodes and their respective children nodes are visited and explored.

Which one is not A best first search?

Explanation: Pure Heuristic Search is also called greedy best first search while A* and B* search algorithms are not greedy best first search.

What is the idea of best first search?

The idea of Best First Search is to use an evaluation function to decide which adjacent is most promising and then explore. Best First Search falls under the category of Heuristic Search or Informed Search.

Is Astar faster than BFS?

The advantage of A* is that it normally expands far fewer nodes than BFS, but if that isn't the case, BFS will be faster. That can happen if the heuristic used is poor, or if the graph is very sparse or small, or if the heuristic fails for a given graph. Keep in mind that BFS is only useful for unweighted graphs.

Is optimal search Complete?

Yes, by definition. Finding the optimal solution entails proving optimality. This can be done by finding all solutions or by proving that no solution can have better cost than the one found already.

Does A * find the optimal solution?

To summarize, A* gives an optimal solution if the heuristic is admissable (meaning it never overestimates the cost).

What makes a heuristic optimal?

In computer science, specifically in algorithms related to pathfinding, a heuristic function is said to be admissible if it never overestimates the cost of reaching the goal, i.e. the cost it estimates to reach the goal is not higher than the lowest possible cost from the current point in the path.

How is optimal path defined?

Optimal-path maps tell robots or people the best way to reach a goal point from anywhere in a known terrain area, eliminating most of the need to plan during travel.

How does unified search is optimal?

Uniform-cost search is optimal. This is because, at every step the path with the least cost is chosen, and paths never gets shorter as nodes are added, ensuring that the search expands nodes in the order of their optimal path cost.

Is BFS complete in infinite space?

BFS is complete regardless of the fact that "usually game trees do not have infinite branching factors".

What is breadth first search used for?

Breadth-first search (BFS) is an important graph search algorithm that is used to solve many problems including finding the shortest path in a graph and solving puzzle games (such as Rubik's Cubes).
