A normal level of oxygen is usually 95% or higher. Some people with chronic lung disease or sleep apnea can have normal levels around 90%. The “SpO2” reading on a pulse oximeter shows the percentage of oxygen in someone's blood. If your home SpO2 reading is lower than 95%, call your health care provider.

How can I measure the oxygen level of my blood during the COVID-19 pandemic?

You can measure your blood oxygen level with a pulse oximeter. That’s a small device that clips onto your fingertip. It shines a light into the tiny blood vessels in your finger and measures the oxygen from the light that’s reflected back.

What is the recovery time for patients with severe COVID-19 that require oxygen?

For the 15% of infected individuals who develop moderate to severe COVID-19 and are admitted to the hospital for a few days and require oxygen, the average recovery time ranges between three to six weeks.

What happens to your lungs if you get a critical case of COVID-19?

In critical COVID-19 -- about 5% of total cases -- the infection can damage the walls and linings of the air sacs in your lungs. As your body tries to fight it, your lungs become more inflamed and fill with fluid. This can make it harder for them to swap oxygen and carbon dioxide.

What is the recovery time for COVID-19 patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)?

Most people who survive ARDS go on to recover their normal or close to normal lung function within six months to a year. Others may not do as well, particularly if their illness was caused by severe lung damage or their treatment entailed long-term use of a ventilator.

Pulse Oximeter | How to Use It? How does Pulse Oximetry Work?

When does COVID-19 affect breathing?

For most people, the symptoms end with a cough and a fever. More than 8 in 10 cases are mild. But for some, the infection gets more severe.

About 5 to 8 days after symptoms begin, they have shortness of breath (known as dyspnea). Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) begins a few days later.

Which parts of the body are the most affected by COVID-19?

In the case of COVID-19, the virus primarily attacks the lungs. However, it can also cause your body to produce an overactive immune response which can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body. Myocarditis can impair the heart's ability to pump blood and send electrical signals.

How does COVID-19 affect the blood?

Some people with COVID-19 develop abnormal blood clots, including in the smallest blood vessels. The clots may also form in multiple places in the body, including in the lungs. This unusual clotting may cause different complications, including organ damage, heart attack and stroke.

Can COVID-19 damage organs?

UCLA researchers are the first to create a version of COVID-19 in mice that shows how the disease damages organs other than the lungs. Using their model, the scientists discovered that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can shut down energy production in cells of the heart, kidneys, spleen and other organs.

Can COVID-19 cause blood clots?

Patients with severe cases of COVID-19 seem especially susceptible, as do those with other health risk factors such as cancer, obesity and a history of blood clots.

Does blood type affect the risk of severe illness from COVID-19?

In fact, the findings suggest that people with blood type A face a 50 percent greater risk of needing oxygen support or a ventilator should they become infected with the novel coronavirus. In contrast, people with blood type O appear to have about a 50 percent reduced risk of severe COVID-19.

How does COVID-19 affect the body?

Viruses attack the body by infecting cells directly. In the case of COVID-19, the virus primarily attacks the lungs. However, it can also cause your body to produce an overactive immune response which can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body.

How does COVID-19 enter the body?

We know that the virus primarily enters the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth and progresses into the lungs, where the most severe illness occurs. However, the virus replicates in cells, including the blood, and when it does, it alters the blood's environment.

How long does it take for symptoms of COVID-19 to appear after exposure?

Symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

Can COVID-19 symptoms worsen suddenly?

Moderate symptoms can progress into severe symptoms suddenly, especially in people who are older or who have chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer or chronic respiratory problems.

Is shortness of breath an early symptom of Pneumonia due to COVID-19?

Breathlessness is caused by an infection in the lungs known as pneumonia. Not everyone with COVID-19 gets pneumonia, though. If you don’t have pneumonia, you probably won’t feel short of breath.

What are some signs of COVID-19 that need immediate medical attention?

• Trouble breathing
• Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
• New confusion
• Inability to wake or stay awake
• Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone

How long does COVID-19 survive on clothes?

Research suggests that COVID-19 doesn’t survive for long on clothing, compared to hard surfaces, and exposing the virus to heat may shorten its life. A study published in found that at room temperature, COVID-19 was detectable on fabric for up to two days, compared to seven days for plastic and metal.

Can you contract COVID-19 through sexual intercourse?

Although there is currently no evidence that the COVID-19 virus transmits through semen or vaginal fluids, it has been detected in the semen of people recovering from COVID-19. We would thus recommend avoiding any close contact, especially very intimate contact like unprotected sex, with someone with active COVID-19 to minimize the risk of transmission

Can you get COVID-19 from kissing someone?

It's well known that the coronavirus infects the body's airways and other parts of the body, but new research indicates that the virus also infects mouth cells. You don't want to kiss someone who's got COVID.

Can COVID-19 have lasting effects?

Some people who had severe illness with COVID-19 experience multiorgan effects or autoimmune conditions over a longer time with symptoms lasting weeks or months after COVID-19 illness. Multiorgan effects can affect most, if not all, body systems, including heart, lung, kidney, skin, and brain functions.

What happens to the body during a COVID-19 critical infection?

During a severe or critical bout with COVID-19, the body has many reactions: Lung tissue swells with fluid, making lungs less elastic. The immune system goes into overdrive, sometimes at the expense of other organs. As your body fights one infection, it is more susceptible to additional infections.

How long does it take to recover from COVID-19?

Fortunately, people who have mild to moderate symptoms typically recover in a few days or weeks.

Is there a link between COVID-19 and blood group?

No evidence to support that COVID-19 risk can be determined by ABO blood group. The researchers say that overall, the review findings suggest that there is no actual relationship between ABO blood type and SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 severity or mortality.

Who is most vulnerable to get severely ill from COVID-19?

The risk increases for people in their 50s and increases in 60s, 70s, and 80s. People 85 and older are the most likely to get very sick.
