Silage is essentially “pickled pasture,” or fodder that's been fermented to feed cattle or sheep during dry seasons. Grasses or other crops, such as rye or maize, are cut, fermented and compressed until they're ready to be fed to the livestock.

What is silage good for?

Compared to hay production, silage increases the potential yield of nutrients from available land, decreases feed costs, lowers harvest losses, and often increases forage quality. Silage can also reduce labor needs through greater mechanization of harvesting and feeding.

What is mostly used for silage making?

Made up of grass, corn, maize, and others, silages are made by chopping the crops into small pieces and then storing them. ... The process of fermentation is done to improve dry matter intake and create a more digestible feed.

Is silage better than green fodder?

Green fodder can be kept preserved in succulent stage for any length of time. 3. Grass silage preserves 85 % or more of the feed value of the crop, whereas hay making will preserve much less percentage of nutrients.

What is silage and its uses?

Silage is pasture grass that has been 'pickled'. It is a method used to preserve the pasture for cows and sheep to eat later when natural pasture isn't good, like in the dry season. The grasses are cut and then fermented to keep as much of the nutrients (such as sugars and proteins) as possible.

Is silage cheaper than hay?

Today, silage is much more economical than most hay, and it may be possible to feed more silage. “Most large feedyards will feed 10% to 15% silage which works well. It's an excellent roughage source and is still more economical than using alfalfa hay or other hays.

How long does silage last?

Storage life will depend on the type of plastic used. Stretchwrap plastic will give a storage life of 12 months, while plastic sheet can last for 2-3 years. Unwrapped round and square bales can be stored in pits or hillside bunkers and covered with plastic sheeting.

Is silage good for cattle?

What makes silage so good for dairy cattle? Good old fermentation. ... Of course, dairy cows require lots of energy to preserve body condition and maximise milk yields. High quality silage is an abundant source of energy, protein and fibre that aids rumen health.

How much is silage per acre?

silage per acre can be expected for each 6 to 7 bushels of grain per acre. For example, if expected grain yield is 125 bushels per acre, corn silage yields will be about 18 to 20 tons per acre of 30% dry matter silage (5 to 6 tons per acre dry matter yield).

Can you feed cows just silage?

Corn silage is a feed that we don't typically feed to beef cows. Corn silage is usually used in growing calf and feedlot diets because of its high nutritive value, especially energy. When hays and alfalfas are expensive, corn silage is a feed that cow/calf producers should consider.

How long does silage take to ferment?

Ideally you should leave a clamp closed for at least 4 weeks but if you are desperate, you can feed it within a few days even though the fermentation will not have stabilised yet.

Why is silage better than hay?

Silage is compacted and stored in air-tight conditions without being dried. Digestive capabilities: Animals do not digest hay. Silage is partially and easily digested, offering more nutritious value. Preservation: Hay is typically kept in a bale, while silage is stored in a bale and covered with tight plastic wrap.

How many layers of wrap does silage have?

The general recommendation for grass silage is to use 2.5 – 4 layers of netting. An important factor here is whether you are using a round baler or a baler-wrapper combination.

Can sheep eat grass silage?

With sheep flocks using grass silage as the base for rations in the crucial pre-lambing period, Rosie Miller, Ruminant Specialist with Trouw Nutrition GB stresses the importance of getting silage for pregnant sheep analysed.

What are the different types of silage?

Three different moisture levels can be achieved: high-moisture silage (≤ 30% DM), medium-moisture silage (30% to 40% DM), and low-moisture (wilted) silage (40% to 60% DM). Low-moisture silage is referred to as haylage. When baled and wrapped, haylage is referred to as baleage.

Do horses eat silage?

When preserved properly, silage is an acceptable feed for horses. Silage should be green or greenish-brown, be uniform in texture and moisture content, and have a pleasant smell. ... Because of these risks and the abundance of hay available, silage is not commonly fed to horses in the United States.

Does silage go bad?

Mouldy silage results in high dry matter losses, as well as poor palatability and livestock performance. This spoilage is the result of aerobic (oxygen) conditions from poor packing, slow filling, low moistures, poor sealing, slow feedout, or poor face management.

Which crop is best for silage making?

The fodder crops, such as maize, sorghum, oats, pearl millet, and hybrid napier rich in soluble carbohydrates are most suitable for fodder ensiling. Quality of silage can be improved with the use of suitable additives such as molasses, urea, salt, formic acid etc.

What happens if silage is watery?

Moisture is critical when harvesting silage. Remember that if the silage is too wet there is a risk of butyric acid forming and nutrients being lost due to seepage. Silage that is over 70% moisture should not be harvested and should stand in the field for a few more days.

Why is silage wrapped in plastic?

Clear plastic also allows you to monitor keeping quality of the silage before feeding out and it is thought to deter birds as they see their reflection in it.

What does good silage look like?

Colour: Well-preserved silages are green, yellow, or pale brown. Dark brown silage is generally poorly preserved. Smell: Well preserved silage has a sweet, tobacco smell. Foul, rancid smells indicate the presence of butyric acid from poor preservation.

How can you make silage better quality?

1. Decide on silage quality needed: ...
2. Cut at the right growth stage: ...
3. Do not sacrifice quality for bulk: ...
4. Do not wait 'for Nitrogen to leave the crop': ...
5. If in doubt, test sugars: ...
6. Wilt for a day: ...
7. Choose additives based on need: ...
8. Reduce post-harvest losses:

How do you make silage?

The 10 steps to making quality silage are: • harvest the forage when excess to feed requirements and high in quality • wilt the forage to 30% DM • add a fermentable substrate at ensiling • chop the forage into short lengths (1–3 cm) before ensiling • compact the forage as tightly as possible • complete the entire ...
