The fuel pump relay is an electronic component that is found on virtually all vehicles equipped with an internal combustion engine. It is often found in the fuse box located in the engine bay and functions as the primary electronic switch that controls power to the fuel pump.

What fuse is for the fuel pump?

Replacing Fuel Pump Fuse

Most fuel pumps will run a 15 (Blue) 20 (Yellow) or 25 (Clear) amp fuse. Using a fuse that's too small will cause the fuse to blow again. This is a normal condition as the fuse isn't rated for the higher amps of a fuel pump circuit.

How do I know if my fuel pump relay is bad?

Start by taking the fuel pump relay out of your vehicle so you can clean and inspect it. After that, you can use a multimeter to check the resistance going through the relay's circuit to see if it's faulty or not.

Is main relay Same as fuel pump relay?

They are one and the same. Main Fuel Relay would be a better name for the part. There is lots of bad terminology used for cars. The Main Relay only controls power for the PGM-FI system but from the perspective of the fuel system it's the main relay.

Where is the fuel pump starter relay?

Open the hood and check inside the fuse box in the engine compartment. The fuel relay is located here on most cars. Check the underside of the fuse box lid for a diagram showing the fuses/relays in the box and their locations. If the relay is not in the fuse box, check the manual or with your mechanic.

Fuel Pump Relay TESTING and REPLACEMENT

How do you check a fuel pump relay?

Location. Most fuel-pump relay units are located under the dashboard near the steering column. In some cases, the unit is located in the area where the steering column is mounted or near the engine's firewall.

Does a fuel pump need a relay?

It depends on how long the wire run is, how thick the wire is, how much current the pump draws, and what other types of controls you want on the pump circuit. Low current pump, short heavy wire, no funky control requirements means you can go without a relay. The opposite means a relay would be nice.

Will a fuel pump prime with a bad relay?

If the fuel pump relay fails the fuel pump will be left without power. The engine may still crank when the key is turned, however it will not be able to start due to lack of fuel.

Does the main relay control the fuel pump?

The main relay in a vehicle controls the fuel pump and supplies power to the injectors. Knowing how to test a Honda main relay can help you better pinpoint the cause when an electrical issue arises.

How much is a fuel pump relay switch?

Fuel Pump Relay Replacement Cost - RepairPal Estimate. Labor costs are estimated between $31 and $39 while parts are priced at $27. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific vehicle or unique location. Related repairs may also be needed.

What are the symptoms of a bad relay?

If your starter relay has gone bad, the electrical signal will never make it from the battery to the starter motor. As a result, your engine won't turn over - no matter how many times you turn the key. A faulty relay often produces an audible clicking sound when you turn your car.

What would cause a fuel pump relay to go out?

Dust, electrical power surge, and other factors can cause a fuel pump relay to go bad. Dust and sudden voltage increases can affect a fuel pump relay's performance and cause an engine to malfunction.

Why am I not getting power to my fuel pump?

If you there is no power to the fuel pump or the relay, then there may be a possible electrical issue with the vehicle. ... If there is an issue with the switch or the circuit, perhaps a wiring problem, then power to the fuel system may be cut off.

Does the ECM control the fuel pump?

Does the ECM control the fuel pump? Some electric fuel pumps are controlled by the ecm and most cars have eliminated this problem by having a switch that keeps the fuel pump shut off until the engine builds up oil pressure. If you have a car ecm with an electric fuel pump and you suspect fuel problems, do this.

How can I start my car with a bad fuel pump?

So, one of the best tips to start a car with a bad fuel pump is to leave your car's engine cool. When your car cools off, it allows the fuel pump to reset without the need for pressure. Also, it would be best if you neither let your car engine get too cool or get very hot.

Where is the fuel pump reset button?

Look for the fuel pump switch or inertia switch. This is a small box with a plastic button on top and an electrical connector at the bottom. On some vehicle models, this will be located in the luggage compartment. Look on a side panel for a small, round button which you can pry off with a small screwdriver.

How do I test a fuel pump relay with a multimeter?

1. Set the multimeter up to read ohms. The ohms scale looks a little like a horseshoe.
2. Touch the meter leads together to test the multimeter. You should read zero ohms. Touch the test leads across the coil of the relay. You should read about 70 ohms.

Can a fuel pump relay cause low fuel pressure?

If the fuel lines are cracked or clogged, the fuel pressure will drop before it reaches the engine. This in turn causes the engine to deliver a poor performance. ... In most cars, the fuel pump is turned on by a fuel pump relay. If the relay goes bad, it will not induce the pump to start functioning.

Where is the relay switch located?

The starter relay is most often located under the car hood, found in the power distribution center. It can also be located in the fuse block in the cabin. The relay has wires coming in and out of it.
