Cervical Spinal Nerves The dorsal ramus (suboccipital nerve) runs between the posterior arch of the atlas and the vertebral artery, providing motor innervation to the suboccipital muscles. The C2 spinal nerve branches into a dorsal and ventral ramus, posterior to the lateral atlantoaxial joint.

What is innervated by the suboccipital nerve?

The suboccipital nerve innervates the following suboccipital muscles: The rectus capitis posterior minor muscle. The rectus capitis posterior major muscle (the superomedial border of the suboccipital triangle) ... The obliquus capitis inferior muscle (the inferolateral border of the suboccipital triangle)

What does C2 nerve innervate?

C1, C2, and C3 (the first three cervical nerves) help control the head and neck, including movements forward, backward, and to the sides. The C2 dermatome handles sensation for the upper part of the head, and the C3 dermatome covers the side of the face and back of the head. (C1 does not have a dermatome.)

What causes Suboccipital muscle pain?

The suboccipital muscles commonly become tense and tender due to factors such as eye strain, wearing new eyeglasses, poor ergonomics at a computer workstation, grinding the teeth, slouching posture, and trauma (such as a whiplash injury).

What are the 4 suboccipital muscles?

The suboccipital muscles are a group of four muscles that are located inferior to the occipital bone. These four muscles include the rectus capitis posterior major, rectus capitis posterior minor, obliquus capitis superior, and obliquus capitis inferior.

What type of nerve is the occipital nerve?

The greater occipital nerve is a cutaneous nerve, the thickest in the body, that innervates the skin from the upper neck, over the occiput, up to the vertex of the scalp ^1-3.

Where does the Suboccipital nerve come from?

Course: The suboccipital nerve is the dorsal ramus of the first cervical nerve. It emerges from the central canal to travel between the posterior arch of C1 inferiorly and the vertebral artery superiorly.

How do you stop Suboccipital pain?

Suboccipital headaches are improved with over-the-counter NSAIDs, ice, stretching, therapy, electric, ultrasound, and cold laser treatments. Goals of treatment are to decrease muscle spasms of the suboccipital muscles and trapezius.

What muscles are innervated by C1 C3?

• Ansa cervicalis (This is a loop formed from C1-C3 which supplies the four infrahyoid aka strap muscles), etc. ( thyrohyoid (C1 only), sternothyroid, sternohyoid, omohyoid)
• Phrenic (C3-C5 (primarily C4))-innervates diaphragm and the pericardium.
• Segmental branches (C1-C4)- innervates anterior and middle scalenes.

What muscles are innervated by C6?

• Subclavius.
• Supraspinatus.
• Infraspinatus.
• Biceps Brachii.
• Brachialis.
• Deltoid.
• Teres Minor.
• Brachioradialis.

What muscles make up the suboccipital triangle?

The right suboccipital region has been exposed and shows the muscles that form the suboccipital triangle: obliquus capitis inferior, obliquus capitis superior, and rectus capitis posterior major.

Which nerve passes through the suboccipital triangle?

The suboccipital nerve is the posterior ramus of C1 spinal nerve. It courses between the posterior arch of atlas and the vertebral artery to innervate the four suboccipital muscles. Deoxygenated blood from the back of the scalp drains into the occipital vein.

Can occipital neuralgia affect trigeminal nerve?

However, the development of hemifacial sensory change associated with referred trigeminal pain from occipital neuralgia is extremely rare. We report a case of hemifacial sensory change associated with referred trigeminal pain from chronic occipital neuralgia.

Can you do a Suboccipital release on yourself?

Self release is a great way to release the tension that builds up in the suboccipital muscles. These are a group of muscles just behind and below the skull that are infamous headache generators. Place one thumb on the mastoid process (bony ridge behind your ear).

How do I calm my occipital nerve?

1. Apply heat to your neck.
2. Rest in a quiet room.
3. Massage tight and painful neck muscles.
4. Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, like naproxen or ibuprofen.

What Innervates the rectus capitis posterior minor?

Innervation. Rectus capitis posterior minor is innervated by the suboccipital nerve, also called the posterior ramus of the first (C1) spinal nerve. The suboccipital nerve reaches rectus capitis posterior minor by traveling between the cranium and the atlas.

What nerves innervate Semispinalis capitis?

Semispinalis capitis muscle receives its innervation through the greater occipital nerve (posterior ramus of C2 spinal nerve) and spinal nerve C3. Blood supply comes from the occipital artery that arises from the external carotid artery.

What Innervates the rectus capitis posterior major?

Rectus capitis posterior major muscle, along with the other suboccipital muscles and semispinalis capitis, are innervated by suboccipital nerve (the first cervical posterior ramus).

What nerve Innervates the scalp?

The scalp is innervated by the following: Supratrochlear nerve and the supraorbital nerve from the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. Greater occipital nerve (C2) posteriorly up to the vertex. Lesser occipital nerve (C2) behind the ear.

What nerve Innervates the back of the head?

The occipital nerves are a group of nerves that arise from the C2 and C3 spinal nerves. [1][2] They innervate the posterior scalp up as far as the vertex and other structures as well, such as the ear.

Which nerve in the cervical plexus Innervates the diaphragm?

The ventral rami of cervical nerves 5, 6, and 7 form the phrenic nerve, which is responsible for motor innervation of the diaphragm and sensory supply of pleura, mediastinum, pericardium, and thoracic viscera.
