Superficial muscles of the chest and upper arm: The biceps brachii biceps brachii The biceps or biceps brachii (Latin: musculus biceps brachii, "two-headed muscle of the arm") is a large muscle that lies on the front of the upper arm between the shoulder and the elbow. Both heads of the muscle arise on the scapula and join to form a single muscle belly which is attached to the upper forearm. › wiki › Biceps

Biceps - Wikipedia

is located in the anterior compartment of the upper arm and flexes and supinates the forearm at the elbow.

What muscle flexes forearm and Pronates and Supinates forearm?

The biceps brachii flex the forearm and work with the supinator of the forearm to rotate it so the palm faces upward. The triceps brachii extend the forearm. The pronator teres and quadratus control pronation, or rotation of the forearm so that the palm faces downward.

What muscle causes forearm supination?

The main muscles enabling pronation of the upper limb are pronator teres, pronator quadratus, and brachioradialis muscles. Supination is mainly facilitated by supinator and biceps brachii muscles.

What muscle flexes and extends the arm?

Biceps brachii: The large muscle of the upper arm flexes the arm and powerfully twists the forearm, turning the palm upward. Triceps brachii: This muscle at the back of the upper arm extends the arm and stabilizes the elbow when the hand is used for fine movements.

Which muscles in the figure flex the forearm?

The biceps brachii, brachialis, and brachioradialis flex the forearm. The two-headed biceps brachii crosses the shoulder and elbow joints to flex the forearm, also taking part in supinating the forearm at the radioulnar joints and flexing the arm at the shoulder joint.

What muscle flexes the forearm at the elbow?

The biceps flexes the elbow. It does this more efficiently when the forearm is pronated , because then it's fully stretched when it starts its action. The biceps can also be a powerful supinator of the forearm, as we'll see later. The last of the three elbow flexors is brachioradialis.

What muscle flexes the hand at the wrist?

The flexor carpus radialis, flexor carpus ulnaris, and palmaris longus muscles all have their origins on the humerus of the upper arm and insert into the carpals and metacarpals on the palmar side of the hand. Working together these muscles flex the hand at the wrist.

What muscles flex and extend the elbow?

Several muscle groups cross over the elbow joint. The muscles involved in flexion (bending) the elbow are the biceps brachii, brachioradialis and the brachialis. The triceps are responsible for elbow extension (straightening the arm).

What muscles abduct the humerus?

Muscles: supraspinatus (initiates abduction - first 15 degrees), deltoid (up to 90 degrees), trapezius and serratus anterior (scapular rotation, for abduction beyond 90 degrees). The deltoid muscle abducts the arm, but at 90 degrees the humerus bumps into the acromion.

What muscles flex the elbow?

Muscles of the Elbow Joint

Triceps brachii: muscle in the back of the upper arm that extends the arm and fixes the elbow during fine movements. Brachialis: upper arm muscle beneath the biceps which flexes the elbow towards the body. Brachioradialis: forearm muscle that flexes, straightens and pulls the arm at the elbow.

What are the muscles in the forearm?

• The forearm is the portion of the arm distal to the elbow and proximal to the wrist. ...
• The superficial layer contains 4 muscles.
• The flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus, flexor carpi radialis, and pronator teres.

What muscle flexes wrist and adducts hand?

Flexor carpi ulnaris: This muscle flexes and adducts the hand. It's innervated by the ulnar nerve. It has two heads: The humeral head originates at the medial epicondyle of the humerus.

What muscle flexes and rotates thigh and leg?

The sartorius muscle is able to flex, adduct and laterally rotate the thigh. It also is able to flex the knee and medially rotates the leg.

What is forearm extension?

Forearm extension is opposite of forearm flexion, that is the straightening of the radius and elbow back to the anatomic position (to 0°). ... It is the opposite of forearm flexion.

What muscle extends the hip and flexes the knee?

The semitendinosus extends the hip and flexes the knee. The muscles originate at the ischial tuberosity and insert at the medial surface of the tibial via a structure called the pes anserinus.

What muscle flexes the hand and middle phalanges?

The flexor digitorum superficialis flexes the middle phalanges of the medial four digits at the proximal interphalangeal joints. It also flexes the proximal phalanges at the metacarpophalangeal joints and the wrist joint.

What is flexor carpi ulnaris?

Flexor carpi ulnaris is a superficial flexor muscle of the forearm that flexes and adducts the hand. It is the most powerful wrist flexor. The flexor carpi ulnaris originates from two separate heads connected by a tendinous arch.

What are flexor muscles?

flexor muscle, any of the muscles that decrease the angle between bones on two sides of a joint, as in bending the elbow or knee. ... The flexor digitorum profundus is a deep muscle that originates at the ulna (bone of the forearm) and acts to bend the fingers near their tips.

What is flexor tendon?

Flexor tendons run from the forearm to the ends of the fingers across the palm side of the hand. They control the ability to bend fingers down to the palm (for example to make a fist, grip, or pinch objects). When these tendons are cut or injured, it can be impossible to bend the fingers or thumb.

Which muscle is called a flexor?

"Flexion" is a bending movement where the angle between two parts decreases. Contracting your biceps exhibits flexion, i.e. it brings your forearm closer to your upper arm and decreasing the angle between the two. So, your biceps is described as a "flexor" muscle.

What are abs muscles?

The rectus abdominis consists of two bands of muscle that run down from around the sternum. They have bands of connective tissue between them, which give the abs their distinctive six or eight pack look. The rectus abdominis muscle is important for maintaining posture and breathing.
