Wackestone is a type of limestone recognized in the Dunham (1962) Classification Scheme in which grains make up more than 10% of the rock but the grains are mud supported, i.e., the grains float in a mud matrix.

How is Wackestone formed?

Wackestone is limestone that consists mostly of hardened ooze with grains supported throughout the stone. In constrast, packstone has more grains that actually touch each other, forming a self-supporting framework containing hardened ooze only in the pores.

What is a packstone in geology?

Under the Dunham classification (Dunham, 1962) system of limestones, a packstone is defined as a grain-supported carbonate rock that contains 1% or more mud-grade fraction.

What is a rudstone?

A rudstone is a grain-supported carbonate rock containing grains larger than 2 mm. It is the coarse-grained version of a packstone or grainstone. The term rudstone is part of the extended Dunham Classification of carbonate rocks. [

Where do Packstones form?

The mudstones and packstones are formed in deeper-water environments. Both grainstone units were likely deposited in carbonate shoals with the nested grainstones forming in slightly more-turbulent depositional environments.

Where are Grainstones found?

Pleistocene reef limestones, lagoonal packstone-wackestones, strandline grainstones, and calcretes are exposed in quarries and low sea cliffs along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from the northern cape to Tulum (Fig. 7-1).

Is packstone a limestone?

Packstone is a type of limestone recognized in the Dunham (1962) Classification Scheme that is grain supported and contains some sand-sized particles.

What type of rock is packstone?

Packstone: Grain-supported muddy carbonate rock (Dunham, 1962).

What is the main difference between packstone vs grainstone?

For example, if the grains of a limestone are touching one another and the sediment contains no mud, then the sediment is called a grainstone. If the carbonate is grain supported but contains a small percentage of mud, then it is known as a packstone.

What is micrite made of?

Micrite is a limestone constituent formed of calcareous particles ranging in diameter up to four μm formed by the recrystallization of lime mud. Micrite is lime mud, carbonate of mud grade.

What is Arenite rock?

arenite, any sedimentary rock that consists of sand-sized particles (0.06–2 millimetres [0.0024–0.08 inch] in diameter), irrespective of composition. More formal nomenclature of such rocks is based on composition, particle size, and mode of origin—e.g., sandstone, quartzite, lithic arenite, and feldspathic arenite.

What is depositional texture?

Depositional texture. not recognizable. Original components not bound during deposition. Original components were. bound during deposition.

What is carbonate mud?

Definition: Carbonate sediment composed of less than 25 percent clasts that have a maximum diameter more than 2 mm, and the ratio of sand size to mud size clasts is less than one.

Is grainstone a limestone?

Under the Dunham classification (Dunham, 1962) system of limestones, a grainstone is defined as a grain-supported carbonate rock that contains less than 1% mud-grade material.

Is grainstone a sedimentary rock?

Definition: Carbonate sedimentary rock with recognizable depositional fabric that is grain-supported, and constituent particles are of intrabasinal origin; contains little or no mud matrix.

Is oolitic limestone a grainstone?

Oolitic limestones are whitish to cream-colored limestones composed of sand-sized (1/16 to 2 mm in size), well rounded, concentrically-layered calcite or aragonite grains called oolites (a. ka. ooliths and ooids). ... The technical geologic term for most oolitic limestones is “oolitic grainstone”.

How can you tell the difference between micrite and mudstone?

Note that a lime mudstone is a carbonate rock. ... Rock is grain-supported and micrite simply fills in spaces between grains that are in contact with one another. grainstone: a limestone composed of grains, but lacking lime mud (micrite). Spaces between grains are filled with spar (cement).

What are uses of limestone?

Limestone has numerous uses: as a building material, an essential component of concrete (Portland cement), as aggregate for the base of roads, as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, as a chemical feedstock for the production of lime, as a soil conditioner, and as a popular decorative ...

What is Sparry calcite?

[′spär·ē ′kal‚sīt] (mineralogy) A clean, coarse-grained calcite crystal. Also known as calcsparite; sparite.

Is dolomite a mineral?

Dolomite is a common rock-forming mineral. It is a calcium magnesium carbonate with a chemical composition of CaMg(CO₃)₂. It is the primary component of the sedimentary rock known as dolostone and the metamorphic rock known as dolomitic marble. ... Dolomite is also a common mineral in hydrothermal veins.

What is Intraclasts in geology?

Intraclast - A fragment of penecontemporaneous, commonly weakly consolidated, carbonate sediment that has been eroded and redeposited, generally nearby, within the same depositional sequence in which it formed (Folk, 1959 and 1962).

Is Grainstone clastic?

Grainstone. Clastic, grain-supported, mud-free limestones. Here is a nice example of grainstone from Shark Bay (WA).

How old are ooids?

10 million years ago, the Plain formed the bed of Lake Idaho. Wave action in the lake washed sediments back and forth in the shallows on the southwestern shore, forming ooids and depositing them on steeper benches near the shore in 2- to 40-foot thicknesses.

Where are ooids formed?

Ooids usually form on the sea floor, most commonly in shallow tropical seas (around the Bahamas, for example, or in the Persian Gulf). After being buried under additional sediment, these ooid grains can be cemented together to form a sedimentary rock called an oolite.

What is the classification of limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary stone with 50% by weight calcite or calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content. However, commercial limestone usually has more than 50% calcium carbonate. Limestone is a “clastic” sedimentary stone.
