Overview. Triton is the largest of Neptune's 13 moons. It is unusual because it is the only large moon in our solar system that orbits in the opposite direction of its planet's rotation―a retrograde orbit. Scientists think Triton is a Kuiper Belt Object captured by Neptune's gravity millions of years ago.

Why does Triton have a retrograde orbit?

The Backwards Moon

Triton orbits Neptune in what is known as a retrograde orbit. This means that it orbits Neptune a direction opposite the planet's rotation. It is the only large moon in the Solar System to do this. ... Others think that Triton may have been formed elsewhere and then captured by Neptune's gravity.

What planet has the most unique orbit?

Pluto's Unusual Orbit. It takes 248 Earth years for Pluto to complete one orbit around the Sun.

Why is Triton such an unusual satellite quizlet?

(Neptune) By far the largest of Neptune's satellites, Triton is also unusual for its retrograde orbit, which indicates that it was not part of the natural formation of Neptune's other moons. ... All of these may be caused by Triton's odd rotational axis, which tends to alternate polar and equatorial regions facing the sun.

What is thought to be the reason for Triton's retrograde orbit around Neptune?

Moons in retrograde orbits cannot form in the same region of the solar nebula as the planets they orbit, so Triton must have been captured from elsewhere. It might therefore have originated in the Kuiper belt, a ring of small icy objects extending from just inside the orbit of Neptune to about 50 AU from the Sun.

Why Does Neptune's Moon, Triton, Orbit Backwards?

What is unique about Triton's orbit around Neptune?

Overview. Triton is the largest of Neptune's 13 moons. It is unusual because it is the only large moon in our solar system that orbits in the opposite direction of its planet's rotation―a retrograde orbit. ... Like our own moon, Triton is locked in synchronous rotation with Neptune―one side faces the planet at all times.

What are 10 facts about Neptune?

• Neptune is the Most Distant Planet: ...
• Neptune is the Smallest of the Gas Giants: ...
• Neptune's Surface Gravity is Almost Earth-like: ...
• The Discovery of Neptune is Still a Controversy: ...
• Neptune has the Strongest Winds in the Solar System: ...
• Neptune is the Coldest Planet in the Solar System:

In what two ways is the orbit of Triton unusual quizlet?

Both have irregular or unusual orbits, with Triton moving in a retrograde orbit (unique for a larger-size moon) and Pluto in a tilted, highly elliptical orbit. Astronomers think that Triton may be a captured moon from the realm of trans-neptunian dwarf planets like Pluto.

What is unique about the moons that orbit Jupiter?

Most of the moons of Jupiter are small, with about 60 of the satellites being less than 6.2 miles in diameter. ... The outer moons orbit in the opposite direction in which Jupiter spins, which is unusual and indicates the moons were asteroids that were sucked into Jupiter's orbit after the initial system was formed.

Which of the following characteristics is unique to Saturn among the giant planets?

Answer: Adorned with thousands of beautiful ringlets, Saturn is unique among the planets. It is not the only planet to have rings—made of chunks of ice and rock—but none are as spectacular or as complicated as Saturn's. Like fellow gas giant Jupiter, Saturn is a massive ball made mostly of hydrogen and helium.

Which planet is the best to live on?

• Its soil contains water to extract.
• It isn't too cold or too hot.
• There is enough sunlight to use solar panels.
• Gravity on Mars is 38% that of our Earth's, which is believed by many to be sufficient for the human body to adapt to.

What is unique about Pluto's orbit around the sun?

Pluto's orbit around the Sun is unusual compared to the planets: it's both elliptical and tilted. Pluto's 248-year-long, oval-shaped orbit can take it as far as 49.3 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, and as close as 30 AU.

What if you fell into Uranus?

Uranus is a ball of ice and gas, so you can't really say that it has a surface. If you tried to land a spacecraft on Uranus, it would just sink down through the upper atmosphere of hydrogen and helium, and into the liquid icy center. ... And this is why the surface of Uranus has its color.

Why do astronomers believe that Triton is a captured moon?

Why do astronomers believe that Triton is a captured moon? Triton orbits Neptune in a direction opposite that of Neptune's rotation. ... The planet must have many small moons that orbit relatively close to the planet in its equatorial plane.

What causes Triton's geysers?

What causes Triton's geysers? -- Triton's geysers are caused by the heating and vaporization of the liquid nitrogen below Triton's surface. Vaporization produces high pressure, which forces the gas through cracks and fissures in the crust, creating a geyser effect.

What planet has 21 moons?

In 1999 three new moons were discovered orbiting Uranus, a great gasball of a planet about 2 billion miles from Earth. The discovery raised the number of Uranian moons to 21, the most, as far as is known, in the skies of any planet.

What are 5 interesting facts about Jupiter?

• Jupiter Is Massive: ...
• Jupiter Cannot Become A Star: ...
• Jupiter Is The Fastest Spinning Planet In The Solar System: ...
• The Clouds On Jupiter Are Only 50 km Thick: ...
• The Great Red Spot Has Been Around For A Long Time: ...
• Jupiter Has Rings: ...
• Jupiter's Magnetic Field Is 14 Times Stronger Than Earth's:

What makes Earth unique among the terrestrial planets?

The Earth is unique among the Terrestrial planets because it has liquid water on its surface and life that is aware living on it. The density of the surface rocks is lower than the overall density of the Earth. ... The Earth now has two heat sources: the Sun and its own atmosphere.

Does Earth have 3 moons?

After more than half a century of speculation, it has now been confirmed that Earth has two dust 'moons' orbiting it which are nine times wider than our planet. Scientists discovered two extra moons of Earth apart from the one we have known for so long. Earth doesn't have just one moon, it has three.

What is unusual about the orientation of Uranus?

Unlike the other planets of the solar system, Uranus is tilted so far that it essentially orbits the sun on its side, with the axis of its spin nearly pointing at the star. This unusual orientation might be due to a collision with a planet-size body, or several small bodies, soon after it was formed.

What do Pluto and Triton have in common?

Both bodies have extremely thin atmospheres composed mainly of nitrogen, the same gas that dominates our atmosphere here on Earth. It seems that the surface temperatures of Pluto and Triton are so low that common compounds we know as gases freeze into ices.

Which of the following is a unique feature of the moon Titan?

Which of the following is a unique feature of the moon Titan? ... We have observed lakes of liquid methane or ethane on Titan, but we have not observed any lakes of liquid water.

What's unique about Neptune?

The Latest. More than 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth, Neptune is the only planet in our solar system not visible to the naked eye and the first predicted by mathematics before its discovery. In 2011 Neptune completed its first 165-year orbit since its discovery in 1846.

Why is Neptune's orbit unusual?

It is also unique in being the only large moon in the solar system to circle its planet in a direction opposite to its planet's rotation — this "retrograde orbit" suggests that Triton may once have been a dwarf planet that Neptune captured rather than forming in place, according to NASA.

Does Neptune rain diamonds NASA?

Deep within Neptune and Uranus, it rains diamonds—or so astronomers and physicists have suspected for nearly 40 years. The outer planets of our Solar System are hard to study, however. Only a single space mission, Voyager 2, has flown by to reveal some of their secrets, so diamond rain has remained only a hypothesis.
