A propeller is a device with a rotating hub and radiating blades that are set at a pitch to form a helical spiral, that, when rotated, exerts linear thrust upon a working fluid, such as water or air.

What does propeller mean in science?

a wind-driven, usually three-bladed, device that provides mechanical energy, as for driving an electric alternator in wind plants.

What is propeller and its functions?

The purpose of the propeller is to provide a method of propulsion so the aircraft is able to move forward through the air. The propeller itself consists of two or more blades connected together by a central hub that attaches the blades to the engine shaft.

What is a propeller person?

a device having a revolving hub with radiating blades, for propelling an airplane, ship, etc. 2. a person or thing that propels. 3. the bladed rotor of a pump that drives the fluid axially.

Where did the word propeller come from?

Entries related to propeller

mid-15c., propellen, "to drive away, expel," from Latin propellere "push forward, drive forward, drive forth; move, impel," from pro "forward" (see pro-) + pellere "to push, drive" (from PIE root. Meaning "to drive onward, cause to move forward" is from 1650s. Related: Propelled; propelling ...

What does airbase mean?

also airbase. Word forms: plural air bases. countable noun. An air base is a centre where military aircraft take off or land and are serviced, and where many of the centre's staff live.

Where are propellers used?

A propeller is a rotating fan-like structure that is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the ship.

What is pitch propeller?

Propeller pitch is the distance the prop would move forward in one rotation if it were moving through a soft solid—think of a screw being turned into wood. ... Some propellers have a constant pitch, meaning the pitch is the same at all points from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the prop blades.

What is propeller law?

Increased propeller diameter An increase in diameter may be considered if the new and reduced power can be utilized at the shaft speed that is reduced more than corresponding to the cubic root of the power ratio (Pn:i = "propeller law").

What is another word for a boat propeller?

In this page you can discover 24 synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic expressions, and related words for propeller, like: airscrew, blade, driver, fan, paddle, oar, prop, screw, propellor, rotor and rudder.

What is the opposite of propeller?

There are no categorical antonyms for propeller. The noun propeller is defined as: One who, or that which, propels.

What is a sentence for propeller?

(1) The propeller started to spin around. (2) The timing of the gun was precisely synchronized with the turning of the plane's propeller. (3) With a low-pitched rumbling noise, the propeller began to rotate. (4) The timing of the gun was precisely synchronised with the turning of the plane's propeller.

What does a propeller do on a boat?

A propeller or “prop” is the final piece of the engine and its drive train. It is the part of the boat that transfers the engine horsepower to the water. The transfer is termed as thrust. Thrust is created as the propeller pulls water into the front of it, (the boat side) and pushes it out on the back side.

Why are propellers in the front?

So having the propeller in front, (specially with twins) even at zero speed, the air flow over the wings, provides significant lift, reducing the necessary take off speed, and the possible landing speed.

Do all planes have propellers?

For the forty years following the first flight of the Wright brothers, airplanes used internal combustion engines to turn propellers to generate thrust. Today, most general aviation or private airplanes are still powered by propellers and internal combustion engines, much like your automobile engine.

What is propeller boss?

Boss This is the solid cylinder located at the centre of the propeller to which each propeller blade is attached. Boss shapes include cylindrical, conical, radius and barrelled. The centre of the boss is bored to accommodate the engine propeller shaft. In America the boss is called the hub.

What is feathering a propeller?

On most variable-pitch propellers, the blades can be rotated parallel to the airflow to stop rotation of the propeller and reduce drag when the engine fails or is deliberately shut down. This is called feathering, a term borrowed from rowing.

What is fixed propeller?

A fixed pitch propeller is the simplest of propeller designs and is associated with many light, piston engine aircraft. The angle of attack of a fixed pitch propeller is set at installation and cannot be changed during aircraft operation.

What are the parts of a propeller?

The basic parts of a propeller are the blade, shank, hub, and leading edge. The blade is an arm of the propeller from end to end. Most propellers have two or more of these. The shank is the thickened section of the blade near the hub, which is connected to the propeller shaft.

What is propeller efficiency?

Propeller efficiency is defined as power produced (propeller power) divided by power applied (engine power). ... The general relationship between engine power, thrust, and propeller power across a given speed envelope in a constant atmospheric model is shown in Figure 2 below.

What is the difference between an air force base and an air base?

USAF bases located in other countries are usually named after the city or region where they're located and are referred to as Air Bases rather than Air Force Bases (e.g. Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany).

What is a military airport called?

An air base (sometimes referred to as a military air base, military airfield, military airport, air station, naval air station, air force station, or air force base) is an aerodrome used as a military base by a military force for the operation of military aircraft.
