Definition. (embryology) A meroblastic cleavage wherein mitosis occurs without cytokinesis, resulting in many nuclei, which migrate to the periphery of a centrolecithal egg.

What is Meroblastic?

: characterized by incomplete cleavage as a result of the presence of a mass of yolk material — compare holoblastic.

What means Meroblastic cleavage?

Definition. (embryology) The incomplete cleavage in telolecithal or megalecithal eggs of animals, such as birds and reptiles. Supplement. Depending mostly on the amount of yolk in the egg, cleavage can be holoblastic (complete or total) or meroblastic (partial).

What are the 4 types of cleavage?

• Determinate.
• Indeterminate.
• Holoblastic.
• Meroblastic.

What is Meroblastic cleavage give examples?

Examples. The cleavage of amphibians, mammals, non-vertebrate chordates, echinoderms, most mollusks, annelids, flatworms, and nematodes are the examples of a holoblastic cleavage while the cleavage of birds and reptiles are examples of meroblastic cleavage.

What is Meroblastic embryo development?

Meroblastic embryogeny is common in gymnosperms. When the part of zygote is involved in the development of embryo, this type of embryo development is called meroblastic embryogeny. In these plants embryo is developed from a portion of oospores and in such case more than two embryos can be developed(polyembryony)…

What is Meroblastic and Holoblastic?

Holoblastic cleavage – is a complete cleavage meaning it completely penetrates the egg. Meroblastic cleavage – is incomplete or partial cleavage meaning it does not penetrate the egg completely. ... Because yolk is bulky, it is difficult for the cleavage to take place.

What type of eggs undergo Meroblastic cleavage?

(c) Telolecithal. (d) All of the above. Hint: Meroblastic cleavage is a type of cleavage that occurs in very yolky eggs like birds in which the egg cytoplasm and not the yolk divides (incomplete division) . Here only a portion of the egg divides.

What is Epiboly in biology?

Epiboly is a morphogenetic process that is employed in the surface ectoderm of anamniotes during gastrulation to cover the entire embryo. We propose here that mammals also utilise this process to expand the epidermis and enclose the body cavity and spinal cord with a protective surface covering.

What is blastomere and morula?

The two-cell blastomere state, present after the zygote first divides, is considered the earliest mitotic product of the fertilized oocyte. ... When the zygote contains 16 to 32 blastomeres it is referred to as a "morula." These are the preliminary stages in the embryo beginning to form.

What is Meroblastic type of cell division?

In such cleavages, the entire cells is divided equally. Eggs cells that have larger quantities of yolk undergo meroblastic cleavage after fertilization, in which only a portion of the zygote undergoes cleavage.

Why is Meroblastic cleavage called incomplete cleavage?

Yolk is very dense, so it makes sense that the more yolk present, the more difficult it is to cleave, or split, a cell all the way through. In this case there is an incomplete cleavage, which we call meroblastic cleavage. Here, cleavage doesn't extend into the yolk itself.

What is animal and vegetal pole?

Animal pole is that region of the ovum where polar bodies are extruded and it receives the sperm while Vegetal pole is that pole which is opposite to the animal pole. ... Animal poles are the most active part of the protoplasm whereas the vegetal pole is not the most active part of the protoplasm.

What is morula stage?

An early stage in post-fertilization development when cells have rapidly mitotically divided to produce a solid mass of cells (16 or more) with a “mulberry” appearance is called the morula stage. The morula stage is the final stage prior to the formation of a fluid-filled cavity called the blastocoel cavity.

What is Mesolecithal egg?

Simple eggs with little yolk are called microlecithal, medium-sized eggs with some yolk are called mesolecithal, and large eggs with a large concentrated yolk are called macrolecithal.

What is true about cleavage in the Fertilised egg in humans?

The cleavage in the fertilized egg occurs in the fallopian tube. ... In humans, the egg cleavage is holoblastic. The cleavage stage embryos are known as blastomeres. Before the implantation cells undergo mitotic division in 2, 4, 8, 16, and blastocyst stages.

What is epiboly and Emboly?

Epiboly is one of the cell movements that occurs in the early embryo during gastrulation. It is characterised by the thinning and spreading of cell layers. ... Emboly is the process in which there occurs an invagination of the blastula to form gastrula.

What is epiboly example?

Prominent examples of epithelial epiboly include closure of the hypodermis in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos (Williams-Masson et al., 1997), and dorsal closure in Drosophila embryos (Harden, 2002). Modes of gastrulation are directly linked to the architecture of the embryo.

What is epiboly and how does it occur?

Epiboly. During epiboly, a sheet of cells spreads by thinning. i.e., the sheet thins, while its overall surface area increases in the other two directions. Epiboly can involve a monolayer (i.e. a sheet of cells one cell layer thick), in which case the individual cells must undergo a change in shape.

Why is human ovum called Alecithal?

Complete answer:

The human ovum is alecithal as it consists of the negligible amount of yolk in it as the embryo develops into the egg and remains connected to the mother by obtaining nutrition from the mother through the placenta and hence requires a negligible amount of yolk in it.

What is determinate type of cleavage?

Medical Definition of determinate cleavage

: cleavage of an egg in which each division irreversibly separates portions of the zygote with specific potencies for further development — compare indeterminate cleavage.

Which type of cleavage are discoidal and superficial cleavages?

Meroblastic cleavage takes place in the presence of a large amount of yolk in the fertilized egg cell and its two types are discoidal and superficial cleavage.

What is meant by Holoblastic?

: characterized by complete cleavage that divides the whole egg into distinct and separate blastomeres — compare meroblastic.

What is the role of yolk in determining Holoblastic and Meroblastic cleavage?

Yolk is stored in an egg cell as deutoplasm is non-living and inert. ... The amount and distribution of the yolk will therefore determine the type of segmentation. The cleavage can be holoblastic (total or entire cleavage) or meroblastic (partial cleavage).

What is Exoscopic Embryogeny?

*Embryogeny in which, of the two cells resulting from the first division of the egg cell, the outer gives rise to the embryo and the inner to the foot. It is seen in the Bryophyta, Psilopsida, and Sphenopsida. Compare endoscopic embryogeny.
