Midgut malrotation is a defect in the normal embryonic rotation of the gut, which causes an abdominal obstruction that presents acutely or with chronic intermittent gastrointestinal symptoms, it must be promptly diagnosed and treated to avoid the severe consequences of small bowel necrosis.

How common is midgut malrotation?

Adult midgut malrotation is very rare and its incidence has been reported to be between 0.0001% and 0.19% [3, 4]. Most adult diagnoses of midgut malrotation are made in asymptomatic patients; either on imaging investigations for unrelated conditions or at operations for other pathology.

Does malrotation require surgery?

Malrotation is considered an emergency situation and the development of volvulus is considered a life-threatening condition. Surgery is required to fix the problem. Your baby will be started on IV (intravenous) fluids to prevent dehydration.

How do you treat intestinal malrotation?

Emergency surgery to repair the volvulus is necessary. An incision is made in the abdomen, the bowels are inspected and the volvulus is reduced. This means that the bowels are untwisted and the blood supply restored. If a small segment of bowel is dead from lack of blood flow, it is resected (removed).

Can you live with malrotation?

Although intestinal malrotation can occur in older children (or even adults), up to 90% of patients are diagnosed by age one – many within the first week after birth. A small minority of people who have intestinal malrotation never experience symptoms, and sometimes live their whole lives without being diagnosed.

Malrotation is a birth defect link that occurs when the intestines do not correctly or completely rotate into their normal final position during development. People born with malrotation may develop symptoms and complications, most often when they are babies but sometimes later in life.

Is malrotation a surgical emergency?

When associated with volvulus, malrotation is a true surgical emergency requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Is intestinal malrotation painful?

An intestinal blockage can prevent the proper passage of food. So one of the earliest signs of malrotation and volvulus is abdominal pain and cramping, which happen when the bowel can't push food past the blockage.

How do you treat intestinal malrotation in adults?

Conclusions: Intestinal malrotation is a rare but important cause of abdominal pain in adults. It may present with chronic or acute symptoms. Laparotomy and laparoscopy are alternative and feasible techniques with low rates of complications for the treatment of intestinal malrotation in adults.

What causes Malrotation in adults?

Malrotation in adults may present in an acute way due to midgut volvulus or may have a chronic indolent course with recurrent vomiting and abdominal pain.

How long can you live with a twisted colon?

Without any fluids (either as sips, ice chips or intravenously) people with a complete bowel obstruction most often survive a week or two. Sometimes it's only a few days, sometimes as long as three weeks. With fluids, survival time may be extended by a few weeks or even a month or two.

Cases of adult intestinal malrotation are rare but can have devastating consequences if not recognised early. Usually, adults with intestinal malrotation report chronic abdominal symptoms such as intermittent abdominal pain and vomiting, bloating, malabsorption and alternating constipation and diarrhoea [^,,].

What causes midgut volvulus?

Midgut volvulus is a condition in which the intestine has become twisted as a result of malrotation during. Malrotation of the intestine occurs when the normal embryologic sequence of bowel development and fixation is interrupted.

What is a Malrotated kidney?
