Metal Fill Overview Whether performed by the designer or by the foundry, metal fill is a mandatory step at advanced nodes to ensure manufacturability and high yield. It involves filling the empty or white spaces near the design with metal polygons to ensure regular planarization of the wafer.

How does metal fill impact timing?

Metal fill insertion affects timing because of added capacitance. Balancing density requirements and timing on critical nets is crucial for timely design closure. IC Compiler II In-Design with signoff quality IC Validator metal fill minimizes the timing impact of metal fill and reduces overall design turnaround time.

What is metal density in VLSI?

hi metal density is just a check to make sure there is uniform density across the chip for manufacturing reasons. In FE you can add metal for each layer. First you setup some parameters like fill density, fill spacing between active layers etc.

Why are metal density rules important in VLSI?

Metal Density Rule helps to avoid Over Etching or Metal Erosion. Fill the empty metal tracks with metal shapes to meet the metal density rules. Floating Metal Fill: Does not completely shield the aggressor nets, so SI will be there.

What is cell density in VLSI?

By default the cell density can be upto 95%. We can reduce the cell density at congested areas by using coordinate option. As shown in below figure, we can set cell density to a flexible number to reduce the congestion by using the command.

Metal Layer basics in VLSI

What is IR drop in VLSI?

IR drop is the voltage drop in the metal wires constituting the power grid before it reaches the power pins of the standard cells. It becomes very important to limit the IR drop as it affects the speed of the cells and overall performance of the chip. There are two types of IR drops: Static.

What is Halo in VLSI?

HALO ( Keep-Out Region):

HALO is the region around the boundary of fixed macro in the design in which no other macro or std cells can be placed. Halo allows placement of buffers and inverters in its area. Halos of two adjacent macros can be overlap.

Why are metal density rules important?

The metal density plays an important role in determining capacitance and interconnect planarization. ... For both grounded minimum density rule- and grounded model-based fill generation methods with 1 buffer spacing, drops to values between 9% and 21% due to the lower metal density.

What is the purpose of DRC?

Design Rule Checking (DRC) verifies as to whether a specific design meets the constraints imposed by the process technology to be used for its manufacturing. DRC checking is an essential part of the physical design flow and ensures the design meets manufacturing requirements and will not result in a chip failure.

What is follow pin in VLSI?

soc encounter followpin

to send power to standard cells, followpins are used. in P&R, first followpins have to be placed on that standard cell placement will be done. then the standard cells will be hooked to power pads thru these followpins.

What is layout density error?

layout density problem site:edaboard.com

Hi, There are some DRC rules obligating that the denisty of certain layers in the layout does not get below or above a certain value. Usually these denisty rules exist for Metal and poly layers.

What are the issues you will face if floorplan is bad congestion and timing?

On similar lines a bad floorplan can create all kind issues in the design (congestion, timing, noise, IR, routing issues). A bad floorplan will blow up the area, power & affects reliability, life of the IC and also it can increase overall IC cost (more effort to closure, more LVTs/ULVTs).

What is logic DRC in VLSI?

DRC constraints exist in library. ... These constraints are imposed upon the design by requirements specified in the target technology library. This presides over optimization constraints to realize a functional design.

What is micron rule?

DESIGN RULES “Micron” rules • All minimum sizes and spacing specified in microns. • Rules don't have to be multiples of λ. • Can result in 50% reduction in area over λ based rules • Standard in industry.

What is DRV in VLSI?

Design Rule violation is one of the major challenges being faced by VLSI industry. ... With ever shrinking technology nodes, and ever increasing gate counts, reaching to more than 40 million on a single die, the complexity of the design is momentous!

Why do we need to fill metal in VLSI?

Whether performed by the designer or by the foundry, metal fill is a mandatory step at advanced nodes to ensure manufacturability and high yield. It involves filling the empty or white spaces near the design with metal polygons to ensure regular planarization of the wafer.

What is APR flow in VLSI?

What is APR flow in VLSI? APR: Auto place and route is the process whereby a gate-level netlist (usually obtained from the synthesis tool) is physically implemented in layout by placing standard-cell layout and auto-routing the cells based on the connections inferred from the netlist.

What is ASIC flow?

ASIC design flow is a mature and silicon-proven IC design process which includes various steps like design conceptualization, chip optimization, logical/physical implementation, and design validation and verification.

What are macros in VLSI?

Macro Cells are the Memory cells. These IPs have been designed by some other Analog design team, which can be used in the floor plan stage of the design.

What is floorplanning in VLSI?

Floorplanning involves determining the locations, shape, size of modules in a chip and as such it estimates the chip area, delay and the wiring congestion, thereby providing a ground work for layout.

What is placement in VLSI?

Placement is the process of determining the locations of circuit devices on a die surface. It is an important stage in the VLSI design flow, because it affects routabil- ity, performance, heat distribution, and to a less extent, power consumption of a design.

What is EM and IR drop?

Electromigration (EM) and IR drop are two unavoidable casualties that make the interconnects susceptible to degradation. When subjected to high current density, congested interconnect transports metal ions in the direction of electron propagation.

What are PVT corners?

PVT is the Process, Voltage, and Temperature. In order to make our chip to work after fabrication in all the possible conditions, we simulate it at different corners of process, voltage, and temperature. These conditions are called corners. All these three parameters directly affect the delay of the cell.

What is physical verification in VLSI?

Physical verification is a process whereby an integrated circuit layout (IC layout) design is verified via EDA software tools to ensure correct electrical and logical functionality and manufacturability.

What is cut metal in 7nm?

The Cut Metal/Trim Metal DRCs are newly introduced in 7nm technology node. The Cut Metal is the new layer, which is introduced in order to minimize the EOL (End of Line) spacing, MAR (Min Area) violations, and Via Enclosure rule.
