is that epitheca is (microbiology|planktology) the upper half of the theca of a thecate protist such as a diatom or dinoflagellate while hypotheca is (microbiology|planktology) the lower or posterior half of the theca of a thecate protist such as a diatom or dinoflagellate.

What is an Epitheca?

1 : an external calcareous layer investing the lower portion of the theca of many corals. 2 : the outer or upper half or valve of the diatom frustule — compare hypotheca.

What is Hypotheca in diatom?

A hypotheca is the smaller half of a frustule. The hypotheca is overlapped by the epitheca. In Greek hypotheca means inner sheath. See also frustule, epitheca, valve, and cingulum.

Which of these is acting as a connection between Epitheca and Hypotheca?

(a) The diatom is composed of an epitheca and hypotheca that fit together like a petri dish. ... A cross section of the diatom reveals that the pores present on the external valve face penetrate to the internal face.

What is the purpose of frustules?

This overlapping allows for some internal expansion room and is essential during the reproduction process. The frustule also contains many pores and slits that provide the diatom access to the external environment for processes such as waste removal and mucilage secretion.

What are Diatoms?

Do diatoms have frustules?

The frustules, or cell walls, of diatoms are made of opaline silica and contain many fine pores. Large quantities of frustules are deposited in some ocean and lake sediments, and their fossilized remains are called diatomite.

Where are diatoms found?

Diatoms are photosynthesising algae, they have a siliceous skeleton (frustule) and are found in almost every aquatic environment including fresh and marine waters, soils, in fact almost anywhere moist.

What are examples of diatoms?

Examples: Tabellaria, Amphipleura. Characteristics: Golden-brown colour from fucoxanthin masking chlorophylls a and c; beta-carotene; various xanthophylls and oils. Each cell is enclosed in a unique type of siliceous cell wall which takes the form of a box with an overlapping lid.

Why are diatoms called?

Diatoms (diá-tom-os 'cut in half', from diá, 'through' or 'apart', and the root of tém-n-ō, 'I cut') are a major group of algae, specifically microalgae, found in the oceans, waterways and soils of the world.

What is Auxospore formation in diatoms?

In certain species of diatoms, auxospores are specialised cells that are produced at key stages in their cell cycle or life history. ... Auxospores can also play a role in sexual reproduction in diatoms, and may be formed after haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.

What color is the Frustule and why?

The color of the living tissue of diatoms is yellow-brown instead of the green frequently seen in other creatures that use light as a source for energy. There are an estimated 6 million diatoms per cubic foot of seawater, most of which are free-floating.

What is the function of the raphe in diatoms?

The raphe is a structure that allows diatom cells to move over surfaces. The raphe system is composed of one or two slits, or fissures, that penetrate the valve of some diatoms. If two slits are present, each is called a branch of the raphe.

What are the bubbles inside the diatom?

The bubbles look like air bubbles that are trapped in the algae. Just do regular water changes and it'll go away on its own.

Are diatoms algae or protozoa?

Diatoms are considered algae and can be colonial or live as a single cell. They are characterized by their beautiful intricate shells, which are made of silica and can persist when the organism dies.

What color are diatoms?

Diatoms are microscopic and mostly unicellular algae and have the green pigment chlorophyll and the yellowish-brown pigment xanthophyll, which is responsible for the golden brown colour. A bloom is a rapid and massive build-up of algal cells of one species that usually gives distinctive colour to a lagoon.

Who discovered diatoms?

The Discovery of The Diatom. Diatoms were first observed in 1703 by an unknown Englishman, published by the Royal Society of London in the Philosophical Transactions..

What protists are diatoms?

Diatoms are unicellular algae, making them a type of plant-like protist found in freshwater and marine environments. Though diatoms are single-celled, they are often found in groups, and we classify them based on their shape.

Are diatoms fungi?

As algae, diatoms are protists. This means that they are eukaryotic organisms that are not specifically defined as plants, animals or fungus. Formally, they are classified under Division Chrysophyta in Class Bacillariophyceae.

Is diatom a plant or animal?

Diatoms are an enigma. Neither plant nor animal, they share biochemical features of both. Though simple single-celled algae, they are covered with elegant casings sculpted from silica.

Are diatoms protists?

Diatoms are single-celled organisms with nuclei and chloroplasts. They are protists living individually or forming chains, zig zags or spirals.

Can humans eat diatoms?

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is safe to consume. It passes through your digestive system unchanged and does not enter the bloodstream. However, you need to be very careful not to inhale diatomaceous earth. ... Because food-grade diatomaceous earth is less than 2% crystalline silica, you might think it's safe.

Are there diatoms in drinking water?

Diatoms are a specific type of algae, a microscopic organism that lives in water and makes its own food by turning light energy into sugar. They can be found virtually everywhere there is water.

Do diatoms have theca?

5.1 The Hallmark of the Diatom: The Silica Cell Wall

The diatom frustule is composed of two overlapping thecae (the larger called the epitheca and the smaller the hypotheca), each of which consists of a valve and an accompanying series of girdle bands.

What is common between diatoms and dinoflagellates?

A similarity between diatoms and dinoflagellates is that they are both types of phytoplankton that can be found in seawater. Bothdinoflagellates and diatoms reproduce using photosynthesis and they both also produce significant amounts of new organisms every year.

Are algae protists?

Plant-like protists are called algae. They include single-celled diatoms and multicellular seaweed. Like plants, algae contain chlorophyll and make food by photosynthesis.
