Coronoid Fractures are traumatic elbow fractures that are generally pathognomonic for an episode of elbow instability.

How do you treat a fractured Coronoid?

Large coronoid fractures can be rigidly fixed and small or comminuted fractures can be fixed with suturing the bone and anterior capsule to the anterior ulna using pull out sutures or suture anchors. The rare small fragments with no soft tissue attachments can be excised.

What is the Coronoid bone?

The coronoid process is a triangular eminence projecting forward from the upper and front part of the ulna. Its base is continuous with the body of the bone, and of considerable strength. ... Its medial surface, by its prominent, free margin, serves for the attachment of part of the ulnar collateral ligament.

How long does it take for a fractured coracoid to heal?

This treatment resulted in complete recovery after 8 weeks and return to full sports on first league level after 3 month. In conclusion, non-operative treatment of coracoid base fractures with concomitant AC-joint injury in the adolescent can result in excellent functional results and early recovery.

What is the function of the coronoid process of the ulna?

Function. The coronoid process stabilises the elbow joint and prevents hyperflexion.

What is a coracoid fracture?

Coracoid fractures are rare fractures [1]. In the shoulder girdle, coracoid process fractures generally accompany dislocation of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint or glenohumeral joint, scapula corpus fracture, clavicular fracture, humerus proximal end fracture or rotator cuff tear [2].

What is a scapular fracture?

Scapular fractures are usually the result of significant blunt trauma. Scapular fractures include fractures of the body or spine of the scapula; acromion fracture; scapular neck fracture; glenoid rim fracture; glenoid stellate fracture; and coracoid process fracture.

What is the function of coracoid bone?

The coracoid serves as an important anchor for several tendinous and ligamentous structures, including, medially to laterally, the tendons of the pectoralis minor, coracobrachialis, and short head of the biceps brachii muscles, and, laterally to medially, the coracohumeral, coracoacromial, coracoclavicular, and ...

How do you treat a fractured scapula?

Most fractures of the scapula can be treated without surgery. Treatment involves immobilization with a sling or a shoulder immobilizer, icing and pain medications. The sling is usually kept for comfort for the first two weeks with subsequent increase of the shoulder's range of motion.

Why is it called the coronoid process?

In human anatomy, the mandible's coronoid process (from Greek korone, "like a crow") is a thin, triangular eminence, which is flattened from side to side and varies in shape and size. Its anterior border is convex and is continuous below with the anterior border of the ramus.

Which bones have a coronoid process?

The coronoid process is found on the ulna and interfaces with the coronoid fossa of the humerus in the elbow.

Are there 2 Coronoid processes?

The coronoid process of the mandible, part of the ramus mandibulae of the mandible. The coronoid process of the ulna, a triangular eminence projecting forward from the upper and front part of the ulna.

What is the classification system for Coronoid fractures?

Coronoid process fractures have been classified into three types within the Regan and Morrey classification system ¹: type 1: avulsion of the tip of the coronoid process. type 2: fragment involving <50% of the coronoid process. type 3: fragment involving >50% of the coronoid process.

What muscles attach to coronoid process of ulna?

The coronoid process projects anteriorly and bears a tubercle on its medial side, to which is attached part of the medial collateral ligament of the elbow joint. Just distal to this are the ulnar heads of the flexor digitorum superficialis and pronator teres muscles and an occasional head of flexor pollicis longus.

How many bones does the humerus articulate with?

The humerus (/ˈhjuːmərəs/, plural: humeri) is a long bone in the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow. It connects the scapula and the two bones of the lower arm, the radius and ulna, and consists of three sections.

Can you feel your Coronoid process?

The coracoid process is palpable just below the lateral end of the clavicle (collar bone).

Why does my coracoid process hurt?

Coracoid impingement syndrome is a less common cause of shoulder pain. Symptoms are presumed to occur when the subscapularis tendon impinges between the coracoid and lesser tuberosity of the humerus [7]. This causes tendinosis and pain in the soft tissues.

Where is the coracoid process?

coracoid process Find the most concave dip in the clavicle and drop inferiorly about 1" to locate this structure. Palpate gently as the coracoid process is sensitive. Confirm its location by passively moving your partner's GH joint through 15° to 30° abduction-adduction.

How painful is a scapular fracture?

A person with a scapular fracture typically experiences severe pain. This pain is often: Immediate. Localized to the upper back, across the shoulder blade, and/or at the top of the shoulder.

What is the most common scapula fracture?

- Scapular body and spine fractures are the most frequent (50% of the cases) (Figures 6, 7). The rim fracture could be transversal, involving the supra or infraspinous fossa, or vertical named trans-spinal fracture. The isolated spine fracture is rare accounting for 6–11% of scapular fractures (50-53).

How do you get a scapula fracture?

Scapular fractures are caused by direct trauma involving a large amount of force or violence. Associated injuries to chest wall, lungs, and shoulder occur in up to 80% of people with broken shoulder blades. Common causes of broken shoulder blades include the following: Motor vehicle accidents.

How do you heal a coracoid process?

Typically, immobilization is recommended for 2-3 weeks, followed by gentle range of motion exercises. Resistance exercises can generally begin at 6 weeks. Isometric exercises may help to maintain strength during the first 6 weeks.

What attached to coracoid?

The coracoid process serves as the attachment site for several muscles. The pectoralis minor is attached to the medial aspect of the coracoid. The coracobrachialis is attached to the tip of the process on the medial side, and the short head of the biceps is attached to the tip of the process on the lateral side.

Can you damage coracoid process?

Coracoid process fracture is an uncommon injury, occurring in about 2-5% of all scapular fractures. It is often associated with other shoulder suspensory complex injuries such as acromioclavicular injuries, clavicular fractures, shoulder dislocations, etc.
