In mathematics, in general topology, compactification is the process or result of making a topological space into a compact space. A compact space is a space in which every open cover of the space contains a finite subcover.

What does compactification mean?

1 : a compact topological space that contains a given topological space as a subset or that contains a subset homeomorphic to the given topological space.

What is meant by space time compactification?

In physics, compactification means changing a theory with respect to one of its space-time dimensions. Instead of having a theory with this dimension being infinite, one changes the theory so that this dimension has a finite length, and may also be periodic.

How do you find one-point compactification?

The one-point compactification of a topological space X is a new compact space X*=X∪{∞} obtained by adding a single new point “∞” to the original space and declaring in X* the complements of the original closed compact subspaces to be open.

Is the one-point compactification unique?

The topological space (X^∞, ) is called the one-point compactification of the locally compact space (X, ). Part (2) of Theorem 2.49 shows that the one-point compactification is “essentially unique”⁷. The point ∞ is called the “point at infinity” of X^∞. If X is compact, then X^∞ = X ⨄ {∞}.

What is compactification in topology?

In mathematics, in general topology, compactification is the process or result of making a topological space into a compact space. A compact space is a space in which every open cover of the space contains a finite subcover.

What is locally compact topological space?

In topology and related branches of mathematics, a topological space is called locally compact if, roughly speaking, each small portion of the space looks like a small portion of a compact space. More precisely, it is a topological space in which every point has a compact neighborhood.

What is a compact set in math?

Math 320 - November 06, 2020. 12 Compact sets. Definition 12.1. A set S⊆R is called compact if every sequence in S has a subsequence that converges to a point in S. One can easily show that closed intervals [a,b] are compact, and compact sets can be thought of as generalizations of such closed bounded intervals.

Under what conditions does a Metrizable space have a Metrizable compactification?

Under what conditions does a metrizable space have a metrizable compactification? SOLUTION. If A is a dense subset of a compact metric space, then A must be second countable because a compact metric space is second countable and a subspace of a second countable space is also second countable.

Is Compactify a word?

(humorous, intransitive) To become compact or more compact.

What are the 11 dimensions?

The 11th dimension is a characteristic of spacetime that has been proposed as a possible answer to questions that arise in Superstring Theory, which involves the existence of 9 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time.

What is brane theory?

In string theory and related theories such as supergravity theories, a brane is a physical object that generalizes the notion of a point particle to higher dimensions. Branes are dynamical objects which can propagate through spacetime according to the rules of quantum mechanics.

What does the M in M theory stand for?

M-theory is a theory in physics that unifies all consistent versions of superstring theory. ... According to Witten, M should stand for "magic", "mystery" or "membrane" according to taste, and the true meaning of the title should be decided when a more fundamental formulation of the theory is known.

What are two ways that compact can be defined mathematically?

There are two definitions of compactness. One is the real definition, and one is a "definition" that is equivalent in some popular settings, namely the number line, the plane, and other Euclidean spaces. (The fact that the two definitions are equivalent is called the Heine-Borel theorem.)

What are curled dimensions?

Compactifying means “curling up” extra dimensions of the theory to a very small size. To curl up two dimensions, for example, take a doughnut (a two-dimensional surface), and begin by squeezing it down to a circular wire with an unobservably small cross section. Then squeeze the wire loop down to a point.

What is metrizable topological space explain?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In topology and related areas of mathematics, a metrizable space is a topological space that is homeomorphic to a metric space. That is, a topological space is said to be metrizable if there is a metric such that the topology induced by.

Are metric spaces paracompact?

In mathematics, a paracompact space is a topological space in which every open cover has an open refinement that is locally finite. These spaces were introduced by Dieudonné (1944). Every compact space is paracompact. ... Every metric space is paracompact.

Are all manifolds metrizable?

A manifold is metrizable if and only if it is paracompact. Since metrizability is such a desirable property for a topological space, it is common to add paracompactness to the definition of a manifold. In any case, non-paracompact manifolds are generally regarded as pathological.

Is 0 A compact infinity?

The closed interval [0,∞) is not compact because the sequence {n} in [0,∞) does not have a convergent subsequence.

Is Z a compact?

Thus {Vi | i ∈ F} is a finite subcover of {Ui |i ∈ I} and we have shown that every open cover of Z has a finite subcover. Hence Z is compact.

What is compact number?

A compact number formatting refers to the representation of a number in a shorter form, based on the patterns provided for a given locale. For example: In the US locale , 1000 can be formatted as "1K" , and 1000000 as "1M" , depending upon the style used.

Does compact imply locally compact?

Note that every compact space is locally compact, since the whole space X satisfies the necessary condition. Also, note that locally compact is a topological property. However, locally compact does not imply compact, because the real line is locally compact, but not compact.

Why is Q not locally compact?

Since Q is dense in R and Q⊆F, it follows that F=R. But then U=Q, and we know that Q is not open in R! Therefore Q is not locally-compact.

Is locally compact Hausdorff space normal?

In particular, closed neighborhoods form a neighborhood basis of every point (since compact in Hausdorff is closed). Therefore, a locally compact Hausdorff space is always regular.

Is time the 4th dimension?

According to Einstein , you need to describe where you are not only in three-dimensional space* — length, width and height — but also in time . Time is the fourth dimension. So to know where you are, you have to know what time it is.
