A cracked heat exchanger allows air from the furnace blower to interfere with the flame causing it to flutter or even roll out. This trips a safety switch and shuts down the furnace. Beware of an unethical technician who finds a crack with a camera on a furnace that seems to be running just fine.

What are the symptoms of a cracked heat exchanger?

• Strange smells. A malfunctioning heat exchanger will often create an unpleasant and strong odor that smells similar to formaldehyde.
• Soot Build-up. ...
• Corrosion & Cracks. ...
• Change in the flame appearance. ...
• Audible Sounds. ...
• Presence of Carbon Monoxide.

How serious is a cracked heat exchanger?

A cracked heat exchanger is pretty serious, as far as safety for your home goes. If there's a crack in this component, the gases being burned off, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxide, could leak into your home, causing illness or, in extreme cases, death.

How much does it cost to replace a cracked heat exchanger?

Replacing a furnace heat exchanger costs $1,500 on average with a typical range between $1,000 and $2,000. Most have a warranty of 10 to 20 years, which usually only covers the price of the exchanger, which typically ranges from $500 to $2,000. Labor alone runs an average of $500.

What causes cracks in heat exchanger?

When HVAC contractors do come across a heat exchanger with a crack, it may be because it over-heated from lack of airflow. This happens when the central air system has gone too long without any type of maintenance work. Dirt and buildup can accumulate, blocking filters, clogging blowers and coils.

Cracked Heat Exchanger Symptoms? Plus what does a cracked heat exchanger look like?

Can a cracked heat exchanger cause a fire?

Carbon monoxide poisoning is not the only possible danger a cracked heat exchanger presents. If combustible gas builds up in your heating unit and is released into your home through a fracture, it can lead to a potentially deadly furnace fire.

Can a cracked heat exchanger be fixed?

Unfortunately, heat exchangers cannot be repaired. When a heat exchanger cracks or rusts through it must be replaced. Because the heat exchanger is at the center of the furnace, nearly the whole furnace must be disassembled. Even if the parts are covered under warranty, the labor and freight will start around $500.

What happens when a heat exchanger goes bad?

The heat exchanger is a conglomeration of tubes/coils in your furnace where the air is heated. A crack in your heat exchanger can be bad news for you, your furnace, and your home if you don't act fast. This causes carbon to be burned, which can release nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide.

How long do heat exchangers last?

In most cases, the heat exchanger determines how long your furnace will last. The heat exchanger is responsible for heating the air that circulates through your home in the winter. Heat exchangers usually last about 15 years. If you invest in maintenance, yours might even last 20.

How much does a heat exchanger cost UK?

Heat exchanger replacement costs

A replacement heat exchanger will typically cost between £300 – £500 but this will vary depending on the model. This potential cost is just for the part itself and not inclusive of what the engineer will charge for carrying out the work.

Should I replace a cracked heat exchanger?

If your heat exchanger is cracked, your furnace is probably nearing the end of its life (18-20 years). If that's the case, then it's usually not worth the money to replace the heat exchanger. No matter who you ask, replacing a heat exchanger will be expensive.

Can a broken heater cause carbon monoxide?

A broken furnace not only deprives your Blue Bell home of heat and comfort, it also can be deadly, too. ... In a furnace, carbon monoxide gas comes from a poorly operating burner or a cracked heat exchanger. A properly tuned and maintained furnace greatly reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What does a heat exchanger do?

Heat exchangers, metal shells and tubes, work by transferring heat from one place to another. When a furnace burns natural gas or propane fuel, its exhaust/combustion by-products (also known as flue gas) enter and travel through the heat exchanger.

What does a heat exchanger do in a boiler?

Heat exchangers are most commonly found in boilers. They allow your boiler to heat the water that is then pumped through your radiators to warm your home.

Do heat exchangers go bad?

All heat exchangers fail eventually. This is because of metal fatigue. Metal when it is heated up expands, and when it is cooled off contracts. ... While heat exchangers are typically manufactured to last between 10 – 20 years, many factors can accelerate the process of heat exchanger failure.

How often do heat exchangers go bad?

A gas furnace heat exchanger should last a good 10-20 years, but it will eventually fail. That's because of the way your furnace works. Metal expands when it's heated and contracts when it cools. Over time, the cycle of expansion and contraction can cause metal fatigue.

Can a heat exchanger be replaced?

You can't repair or replace a heat exchanger because there's too big a risk of carbon monoxide leaking into your home. It's also cost-prohibitive. That's why you need to replace the entire furnace.

How long should a home heater last?

Average Furnace Lifespan

Although some furnaces can last more than 40 years (extremely rare), the average life of a furnace is around 15 to 30 years. As long as you have scheduled annual furnace maintenance, it should easily last over 15 years.

How can a heat exchanger be examined for damage?

Inspect the interior of heat exchanger with mirror and flashlight check for evidence of water indicating a crack, rust perforation or crimp leak. Then there may be times you just need to pull the heat exchanger and fill it with water just to verify where the leak is at.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace?

How Much Does a Furnace Cost? A new furnace costs $1,500 to $6,500, depending on the model you choose. The average cost of installing a mid-efficiency furnace is $1,500 to $2,500. Mid-efficiency furnaces have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of 80% to 89%.

How much does a forced air furnace cost?

Ultimately, the basic cost of purchasing a furnace and having it installed will be approximately $1,300–$1,600. Gas furnaces may cost a bit more, with the system itself sometimes running as high as $2,900 and the installation being up to $1,500.

Does a cracked heat exchanger always leak carbon monoxide?

“A furnace with a cracked heat exchanger will definitely produce carbon monoxide and poses an immediate danger”. ... If combustion gasses could move through a crack in a heat exchanger to the indoor air stream, it would defy the laws of physics.

How hot does a home furnace heat exchanger get?

A mid-efficiency gas furnace can raise the temperature to 170F, but a high-efficiency model can only raise it to 150F. There are top quality furnaces that can raise it to 200F.
